@theconnactic Great playing. I must admit I struggle with jazz but any song with a bass break is ok with me.

    Thank you very much, @orchardman!

  • Hey, @JeffChasteen: congrats for the song. Loved the long, very climatic intro. Did you use Tonestack as a DAW? Congrats: no easy feat!

Yes, I used ToneStack as a DAW. I do so 90% of the time. It is a fast and dirty way to work. And its obvious limitations keep me on my toes.

@JeffChasteen Love your choice of apps. Off the path there are different worlds/feel. LOVE the title. Perhaps too much reverb at the start, wanted that disembodied voice to scare me more by being right there at my shoulder, in my ear, pulling more directly at my organs. By about two minutes I like the almost campfire ghostly gospel/blues sound of the voices however. Can't understand a word, but that's OK. By 3 minutes I wanted something next in terms of development or departure, something arriving or demanding my further attention. Or for the main theme to fade back to the bones and a different voice (Billie Holliday? Bjork? Leadbelly? Hazel? Jagger? Biko? Waits? The Devil Hisself?) to come in on top with some commentary on it all...by 5.02 I resented that the freight train whistle or harmonica wasn't pulling out across the backstage of your mind, but I like it and you've got something here to these ears.

  • @theconnactic Yes! Carnival time. The happiness you inject into your music comes through in droves. Your playing is as tight as a ducks arse & everything is right on the button. The section 1.05 to 1.23 reminded me of the music they played when attempting the conveyor belt challenge at the end of the Generation Game. I liked that as well! The bass break was gorgeous & the "chick, chick chick" hats sat with it perfectly. Your obviously a talented musician, on top of mixing & production & thankfully given a huge blast of hot sunshine to a dark, wet miserable day. Cheers!

  • @JeffChasteen There's some weird shit on here this month. Loved this track, I was picturing the slaves in the fields picking cotton and its great to hear slide guitar being used in such a different way. Excellent.

    Thanks for listening

A bit of "My life in the bush of ghosts" here. Nice tablas and voice samples. An interesting lead.

  • Another Gadget track. Gadget came up with the name and I can't bring myself to change it ;)

  • Nice track, nice synth riffs, @achromus. Keep it up!

    Thank you kindly.

  • Ah ah, jazz fusion ! Reminds me the Breakers brothers and all this period.
Love the brazilian break before the bass solo.
At 2:54 , to me the guitar is completely out of tune ! This is too bad as the track is very precise, so I really hear only this "bug".

Reminds me TV shows from the 90's :) It's clean and nice to listen too, the main theme does not stay in my head, but I'm very basic with gimmicks also...

True, vocals are better ! I should have worked the drums more ! Make them more bigger, the mix seems a bit flat, but it's really much better than the previous track I've listened to.

Very good production ! The stye is completely integrated. Well done !

Very original, and the production is very neat. Unfortunately there's not much happening, to my opinion, after the intro...
So almost 6 minutes ?...Well, as a transition track in a concept album, a big YES, but I'm not sure, for a 6 min track..

That note is a bend, lol: I recorded the guitar (and all live instruments btw) in one take. Unless it's classical piece, @crony, I think a little bit of imprecision is fine and even welcome. Thank you very much for the feedback and compliments. In the part before the bass improvisation, I used a Brazilian typical instrument, a Cavaco. Glad you liked!

  • @Igneous1 You teased me into your latest with a Howard Jones, Thompson Twins feel intro & that's all the retro I heard. It's an Igneous track which is a compliment & also very comforting & warm. Love that bass riff at 1.23 & because you've changed the beat during that riff, it cleverly emphasises the rich deepness even more. Those intricacies are worked in seemlessly. As always the mix & production are top notch. You manage to add different sounds & textures without disturbing the natural flow & progression of your songs & that's what makes listening to your tunes a satisfying experience.

  • I'm having trouble coming up with any nit picks/recommendations for anyone this month, which I don't think is a bad thing. @achromus, that is a thing of beauty. Great feel to it, and you manage to maintain that all the way through. The timing/instrument changes just seem to come at the right times. Love the build, the layoff, the build again. Very sweet.

  • @DD829, that's a cool tune. A little 60s, a little Oasis. Some very interesting harmonic choices in there, verging on discord at times, that adds an interesting edge. Good mix, I like the touches of synth. It says on your page that someone else recorded it? They have an iOS studio set up?

  • Thanks, @JohnnyGoodyear. Unsettling is good, I think, as long as you found something you liked in it. It's an odd beast for sure.

  • @JeffChasteen, great sounds, fantastic mix, with all the layers going on in there. Musically, I kept waiting for it to move somewhere, so for me, it's probably a bit long for what it is. At the same time, the feel, the sounds, really pulled me in.

  • @rickwaugh In some parts I was expecting Ian Anderson & his flute to break in while in others a Spanish classical guitarist using a piece of dried Sushi as a plectrum! It's different, stylish & brilliantly played sir. I liked how you've added those tom beats to complement & add texture to your own, uniquely constructed song. It intrigued my senses, woke them up to experience something I can't remember them listening to before. Original, dramatic & thought provoking & that's one hell of an achievement in making music.
I like the stop start because it's different & unexpected in a "Mmm, I like that" sort of way. You play with passion & great timing & all tightly produced.
Excellent title by the way, really fits.

  • Thanks, @Bluepunk. You liked all the things I was trying to hit. Most important of course is that it was engaging, of course. Very glad you liked the percussion, I'm getting there.

And I love Jethro Tull. Ian would be most welcome.

  • Two channel drum recording is underestimated but incredible effective.

  • @orchardman First of all, again, your wife's has a fine, tidy voice. Do I hear a tinge of "Celt" in there? Vulnerable & effective which suite your song & some lovely harmonies flowing on top as well. Musically, my favourite bit is at 3.33 when your solo kicks in. It lifts your song to a higher level. Clever that after the soaring solo you've calmed it down by playing that synth to bring it down to the beautifully sung ending. There's a huge loud crash at 4.16. Not sure if it's meant but it didn't seem to fit. The drums are doing their job but sound a bit flat in the mix although I enjoyed listening, tapping along & thinking of laying in spring meadows with a gentle, warming breeze blowing through the grass. Good job.

  • @orchardman that's a great track, I love the guitars (all of them), the slightly celtic rhythm guitar in the first break, the lead parts played behind the vocal, and all the lead break at 3.40.

The vocal is a fraction flat - it would really be worth running through some kind of pitch-correction software, because the timbre and the performance are really good, but the pitching being slightly off really affects the song. Recording vocals is really difficult and good singers usually require a few takes (@LostBoy85 will confirm that one), but this performance is good enough to keep if you can fix the pitch.

Also I thought the bass could come up a bit in the mix, but overall it's really very good.

  • Many thanks to everyone who has commented on my track (particularly @Bluepunk for his very in depth comments !)
I feel I'm starting to get reasonably proficient with Gadget now, as it's the only iOS DAW I'm currently concentrating on. I'm very much looking forward to the forthcoming update, so then at some point I can go back and finish these tracks I've been posting here off and wrap-up the album project of which they'll comprise.

There really are no words. Other than a few "all rights" and "woahs", the bulk of the lyrics are just hoodoo gibberish. A language in which I am somewhat fluent.
    Thanks again.

I am glad that you found the piece to be evocative. I also appreciate that you like slide used in a context other than beer commercial or biker movie.

It is indeed a bit too long, but I liked the vibe so much, I could not bring myself to give it the judicious editing it actually requires.
    Thanks again.
