I'm looking forward to AUM, great developer, great Apps, trying to keep money together, so that I will be able to pay the price j_liljedahl will be asking. It's gonne be worth it.

I don't think you should worry too much about affording it, AUM will have an introductory price that I think is very fair (perhaps even cheap)! :)

Hey, what will be the quickest way to know when your AUM app has gone live? Just keep checking the app store? Or, will you announce on your twitter feed? Here?

I'll likely buy AUM as an instabuy as long as it's not way too pricey. Getting tired of constantly checking to see if it's live yet. ;)

It will be released in a few days, and I'll announce it on twitter, in this forum (though I bet someone else will be first), on my website, iPad Musicians facebook group, etc.

Cool. Thanks. Looking forward to it and thanks for all the great work thus far. :)

  • I think Apple needs to push this release through, before this thread gets nasty...

  • @skiphunt

Yeah don't worry about hearing about it, will be all over AB forums in seconds of release :)

  • @skiphunt

It took the Auria developer nearly 10,000 hours over a period of three years to bring us the optional upgrade - as you know, since you've read the mail - but you're acting here as if it was some kind of greedy get rich quick scheme. Wonderful

These seems as good a place as any to share this. Seeing as how the post has infact a "headbutt" in it. lol

As a teen, my friends and I were at the local bowling alley. Three of us were/are Martial Artists. 4th was not, and not really my friend, but a friend of one of my friends in the group. I took it upon myself to vocalize how I thought headbutts were stupid, and I couldn't possibly see how they could be useful in a fight. I then said "No one would ever get close enough to me to headbutt me, it would never happen."

Well, right then and there, 4th guy in group walks up to me and headbutts me right in the chest. What could I say, other than wish I would-a stayed home and played guitar that night instead of Bowl.

  • Some time ago I had a USB Interface/Controller/Digital Mixer called an EZbus. Thing was amazing. It was big, ugly and hard to grok, but it had tons of ins/outs and would take any signal and send it to any channel or aux through effects or what have you with big faders and options aplenty. It was apparently ahead of its time, as it was quickly scuttled and may have put the company in debt since they only make speakers now, but I miss that thing. Ran it till it died. Now it looks like I get it back with a big touchscreen bonus!

    It cost $800, btw.

Even if we don't know the price yet I'd say even at $19.95 it will be worth it for the work-flow improvements alone.

I dunno. Looks cool, but that seems a little pricey to me. Hope he stays at the reasonable level like he has with all his other apps, instead of going all greedy like some devs seem to. Will wait and see, but I'm saving a few pesos until next week to find out, and hopefully (finally) get in on low intro pricing before they jack it back up a day later ;)

This app is at a whole new level of investment for me, considering the efforts and time spent to make it as good as I possible can, all the way from the optimized internals to a fluid and good-looking user experience. And, since it's not really an app for "the masses" but for serious iOS musicians and sound recorders, it will be priced higher than my other apps. Other apps that might appeal to a higher number of users can be priced lower, because the volume of sales makes up for it.

I respect that totally, & understand. All your apps are the one of the best, & you are a dev that cares & updates for us all IOS musicians. You have my vote, & support. o:)

Look... at this point I regret and apologize for calling out one specific developer. That was wrong of me. It doesn't change how I feel about it from my perspective, but I shouldn't have brought up the Auria case as an example.

At the time, I was playing with DAW Multitrack. It was and still is a very good app that the developer keeps improving. I wanted to kick it up a notch with more features to play with AND wanted to be able to bring in a video clip as reference while I messed with audio. Auria was touted as the best on most of these forums and blogs at the time. It also had an in-app upgrade to bring in a video clip. So, I trusted all the blogs/forums and ponied up the $50 and whatever it was for the video feature component. I think it was another $7 or so but I'm not certain.

Never could get it to work right. Always freezing up, crashing, etc. Tried everything and eventually gave up on it hoping for an update that would make it useful. So, eventually... over a year I think, maybe close to 2years. I don't recall exactly but it seemed like a very long time. I moved on, figured the iOS or the hardware wasn't quite ready for primetime and bought Logix Pro X instead. Very deep and much more than I really needed.

Eventually RIM updates Auria. I'm like "Finally!" Maybe I can get some value of my original $57 out of this app. He fixes the original app so that it's usable and introduces a few new features.... but wait, you gotta pony up another $40 if you want those.

I'm like, "Heh, yeah... uh... um... fool me once... no thanks. But hey, thanks for making the app I bought almost 2yrs ago finally function properly."

That's where I'm coming from. That's just one person's experience and opinion.

So, again... I regret calling out one developer with one upgrade/update scenario that I think could have been handled better and more respectful of paying users. It wasn't fair and it was wrong of me. It's completely my own fault for derailing this thread and I take full blame. I honestly apologize for that.

Can we put this topic to rest now, and get back to being giddy about the launch of AUM? :)

  • fair enough

AUM will be essential purchase for me that's for sure

  • Giddy yup

  • Regarding being fully MIDI programmable, does it support HUI and/or Mackie Control? Or does it have a midi learn that would support either of those two modes?

  • @j_liljedahl I was hoping you could make the MIDI routing more confusing in a future update. Thx.

It has midi learn (from the video). Dunno if your HUI device sends midi or just hui.

As far as I understand, HUI is a midi based protocol but it is more complex than basic CC's and PC's. Just wondering if AUMs midi learn would recognize it. That video is so fast paced I've watched and paused several times to try and see what is going on but I am still missing the midi learn. It must be the App Store video.

  • edited February 2016

Does anyone know if the hardware output destination in the video means audio over lightning cable? Havent been this excited about an app since patterning :)

  • Don't give Rim a bad reputation, he deserves better than that!

Not possible. Rim's reputation is impeccable. Someone unhappy with the fact that a Mercedes costs more than a skateboard isnt going to make Mercedes lose any sleep.

AUM uses plain basic MIDI note and CC's, no HUI. But that might be added in a future update if someone donates a controller that sends HUI :)

In the video, the output indeed is audio over lightning, since it was recorded via QuickTime player through lightning cable. Apparently this makes the Mac act like a HDMI audio interface.

However, as far as I know you need OSX El Capitan to use it as a "normal" audio device on your mac. It's interesting though that the technology was already there, since QuickTime player can record it that way even without OSX El Capitan!

AUM also supports multichannel USB audio interfaces, currently up to 16 stereo input/output pairs.

You could for example load up some pre-recorded multichannel files (split into stereo pairs) using the built-in file player nodes, and have them played back in surround on multiple speakers, synchronized to Ableton Link, etc.. :)

  • edited February 2016

If the multichannel space were organised as two stereo pairs, like this,

it’d fit into my Quasonama idea I mentioned elsewhere.

Does this mean AUM could be potentially be used as a 5.1 surround sound mixer with 5.1 output?

  • Sorry but I must rant.

You guys are all nuts about iOS app pricing. The cost of just about any iOS music app is minuscule versus the capabilities. Get over it. Get out of your bedroom and see what the real world is like.

    Rant over.

  • Will someone please just start a new thread when this comes out? I'm tired of getting excited by the number of posts only to see arguing over and over

  • @TGiG said:

    +1

  • Well, all the extra posts (related or not) only add interest by how active the thread is. It's only a good thing for AUM.

But, I've already apologized for bringing up the Auria example. To be clear, only for bringing it up in this thread and singling out one dev as an example. However, I don't think insulting users who don't have deep pockets is very cool either. I thought we were all passed this and back to contemplating the new AUM app?

And, have tried to change the subject back to AUM several times. I'd go back and delete my Auria example posts if I could, and I invite a forum moderator to do just that if they care to.

Now back to AUM. Based on what @j_liljedahl has described... could AUM potentially be used to mix DD 5.1 Surround then output? Or, is that beyond the capabilities of iOS?
