Song of the Month Club - March 2016

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
_
The spirit of the club is to contribute:_ if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, is often the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are very welcome, and songs with vocals are especially encouraged, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

  • Well, seems I'll again be the first:

"Quid Pro Quo" is a latin expression that has a different meaning in Portuguese and English: in Portuguese, it means a misunderstanding, a mistake, while in English is just an exchange of one thing for another, "tit for tat".

Enjoy the listening, and have a fantastic week!
    Dimitri.

@theconnactic This feels like a convincing album version of a television show theme/soundtrack. Interesting about the different derivations of meaning to 'Quid Pro Quo'. I didn't know this, although it must be said my Latin (despite five years of sleeping through classes at school) is very sketchy at this point and mostly reduced to muttering "mea navis aëricumbens anguillis abundat" :)

  • Early in the month, but this is a draft that I hope to make progress with in March. It was inspired (in the doing of it) by @Bluepunk.

I am probably bidialectal at this point with an accent that falls somewhere between London and Texas (plus a long stop off in New York), but Mister Punk’s loud/proud English example has brought me (at least in this draft form) somewhat back to my roots.

The words (see below, if required) are heartfelt and that’s about as much as I’m going to say about them at this point. I don’t intend to change them because they say what I need to, but I am thinking of redoing the vocal to something more mournful, the song being that (in many ways), but it’s also –at heart- angry. I’m torn.

    Guess we’ll see.

This Is How A Lullaby Sounds (Love song for Lee Miller)

By the side of my grave
    Sits an old memory
    Her name is Lee Miller
And she’s staring back at me

    She died July 21
    1977
And I can’t say for certain
If she made her way to heaven

Or if she cared pretty much
    About it either way
But there was a boy who was 16 in London
    And remembers well that day

    Forgiveness and remembrance
And more than anything some meaning
As our days run out of certainty
It’s on those posts we’re leaning

For a purpose and a value
    But especially some grace
And that’s exactly what I see
When I look at Lee Miller’s face

    She lay in Hitler’s bathtub
And before that she was Man Ray’s muse
Later on she drank too much
And forgot all she had to lose

But when I think of her it’s not as broken
Or old or gone to seed
But a woman out of time
    And a calling beyond need

    And now I’m older also
    Been through some bitter times
    The clock is nearly vertical
I can hear those final chimes

For a purpose and a value
    But especially some grace
And that’s exactly what I see
When I look at Lee Miller’s face

[This is how a lullaby sounds
to a father who’s seen his baby die.]

  • @theconnactic I have about a dozens CDs of funk-jazz compilations that this track reminds me of, late 60s to 70s hammond-organ movie soundtrack fodder, so I'm fairly familiar with this kind of genre. I would say for the track to truly take off it needs busier drums, but all the playing is very competent. The guitar solo does bring a needed injection of energy at the 2 minute mark. It's technically very good, but I would definitely like to hear more in the way of innovation.

  • edited March 2016

@JohnnyGoodyear I think the mournful vocal would probably be better, because the angry delivery doesn't have the vibe which you are usually so good at creating. Something sadder would definitely have more emotional impact IMO. The refrain at the end works much better than the early verse for me. Looking forward to hearing how this one evolves.

  • Thank you for the reviews, @JohnnyGoodyear and @richardyot!

  • @JohnnyGoodyear, nice song and impactant lyrics. Congrats!

  • Hi all, thanks for all the feedback over the past couple of months, I have tried to take on board some of the constructive criticism I have received.

Some more folky goodness from us this month with an indian vibe. Its been the wettest, darkest, most miserable winter I can remember here in south Wales so we have tried to channel our inner hippy to bring some sunlight back. As usual, mostly IOS into loopy and than exported to Live for vocals, mixing and mastering. As always all feedback welcomed.

  • Nice melody, @orchardman, and the vocalist is great. The song reminds me a litlle of Dido's later work. The indian vibe was not so clear to me: it sounded more as a hybrid between celt and middle east vibe. Very good: enjoyed it a lot.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear: in fact, the english meaning of Quid Pro Quo derives from a completely different Latin expression. Why did it happen, I'm not sure. Worth noting that English is still a west germanic language, closely related to (but not mutually inteligible with) Frisian, despite all the Latin influence via French: being in a different family of langauges perhaps contribute for the meaning to be lost in translation (while in most romance languages, such as Portuguese, the original Latin meaning survived to date).

  • Does anyone here have a subwoofer? If so, could you please listen my song using it against other commercial music? I rented my good pair of near field monitors to a friend of mine for critical work, so I am having to mix using an old Seenheiser HD280 pair of earphones, and I have to guess the bass looking at the spectral analizers and AB'ing with my references, which help, but to a limited extent. Thank you in advance.

A little damning with linguistic faint praise there :) Nicely done.

  • Building the album..... Again, not going to do any comparisons. You have a great string of tunes.

not much to add. great tune.

  • @theconnactic, I have to agree with the comment about it being a good track for a TV show, it would. Great feel and mix as usual, but maybe not as engaging as some of the stuff from last month. As an old bass player, love the bass sound - both nice and fat, and punchy enough to be heard.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear, that's a brilliant song. It would be interesting to hear it done in a more mournful fashion, but at the same time, declaiming like that felt pretty right, too. It felt like someone old, remembering something, and just pushing it out there, stating something and trying to keep the emotion in check. I liked the changeover at the end as well.

  • @orchardman, love the touch of Indian, sounds great. Wonderful mix at the beginning there, with things moving back and forth. The transition in and out of the "ohms" the first time was a bit rough for me. The dual guitar solo, the right channel was a bit hotter than the left, which unbalanced it a bit. Lady's voice is lovely. Very enjoyable track.

Well, for this statement I thank you the most: I had to mix with headphones this time, and headphones not suited to the task, monitoring the bass region with FF ProQ spectral analizer. So I was afraid of the bass (and the kick) not fitting well in the mix. Really glad you not only liked it, but also praised it over other elements of the song.

    Looking forward to hear yours.

I appreciate that Mister Rick and while we all hide ourselves (as much from ourselves as anything) your summation It felt like someone old, remembering something, and just pushing it out there, stating something and trying to keep the emotion in check is -somewhat scarily- pretty much exactly right....

  • @theconnactic, not going to be a piece from me this month. I'm stuck on something, and contemplating either abandoning it, or what I need to do to get going. My process is pretty slow.

@JohnnyGoodyear, if I hit it, then I guess you nailed what you meant to say.

  • @orchardman the pitching on the vocal is much better this month, the vocal sounds really great, very nice voice indeed.

I also really like all the variety and dynamics in the track, although some of the transitions are a little abrupt, but there is a lot to keep the interest up - and with a 6 minute track that's no easy feat. Love some of the sounds as well, the little percussive sounds in the background and the indian instruments and the weird vocal ekekekekeke thing.

One thing that is particularly interesting is the mixture of whimsy with the hard-hitting. The lyrics and the indian vibe could definitely be from the psychedelic era, but the song doesn't have the softness of 60s psychedelia, the sudden transitions and the drums give it a more modern and impactful feel, I think it's a pretty clever blend that sounds really cool.

I think this is a really creative and interesting contribution, with lots of great musical ideas and a good vocal performance.

  • @theconnactic Some terrific, technical (to me) playing that really stands out through your tune. This one, for me, was a smidgen down on that "Carnival" feel I normally experience when listening to your previous entries. It's still an enjoyable foray into your musical worlds. Last months could have been used on the Generation Game while I'm sure I remember hearing similar styles to this one on many a "Love Removal" video from the early 80's
Well played, mixed & produced. Something all your tunes possess is happiness, joy & fun. None of that applies to my stuff so It's refreshing to take a brief step into the Light now & again to get a recharge. Nice one!

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I'm going against the grain here. I love the more angry vocal delivery.....shock! It's sitting just right between melancholia & in yer face! Great to hear you back to your roots. Good ol' London sound delivered in your unique way. The echo on those vocals is a top shout & perfect in the mix. Doesn't get in the way of the main vocal which is clear & uncluttered. The rhythm section are on point supplying a "Streets" type groove to keep the feet tapping, dancing & feeling it. The song is full, you haven't wasted a second yet you've retained a charming emptiness, space for the star, your vocals, to take centre stage.
You say you're torn.....well, my vote is to "stick" but I'd still like to hear a "twist" version. To me Johnny, this IS your very best yet in all aspects of song making. It's a very cool song & as usual your lyrics are meaningful & you deliver them in a meaningful way. Topper Sir!

  • Here's my entry for this month. 'Endless Square'

This will be my final SOTMC entry with my Formbank stuff. I've decided to look to finalising the tracks I've done so far, so I won't be doing any new tracks. Without wanting to sound self-promoting, there's some other recent tracks on my Soundcloud page, as well as the SOTMC contributions, which will be included in an upcoming album of some kind .

Anyway, all done in Gadget (again), but this time using the truly useful compressor and the Eq in the new version. 'Endless Square' veers between 4/4 and 6/8, which may account for it's oblique 'feel'. Title comes from Gadget's brill auto-naming feature.

    Hello,

    I've missed february for 4 days ;)
    So here's my new track.

I'm listening to tracks of this month and post feedback very soon.
    Enjoy! :)

  • @theconnactic
I like the 70's style (to me) production is nice, and the jazzy theme is nice !

    @JohnnyGoodyear
hmm, I have mixed feelings, the first part seems hard to listen, then from 1:50 to the end I like it much more. Less things, cleaner to listen to, really.

@orchardman , oh yeah love it, nice production, love the indian style. Voice is a bit overmixed to me, and deserve to be clearer (equalized in high band ?)

    @Igneous1
Like the intro, I can listen to different parts easily, production is nice, after 2:00 it looses me a bit...

  • edited March 2016

Thank you very much for the review, @crony! Later tonight I'll review your latest song and also @Igneous1's.

By the way, @Igneous1, good luck with your album. I released mine last year and it was quite a good experience. I released it without a label, so I had to deal with aspects of the music business I had no idea of. I learned a lot! Do you have Deezer? If so you can listen to it here: http://www.deezer.com/album/10643612
