  • @JohnnyGoodyear I first listened to this on Saturday evening. Terminator Genisys had just begun as your track ended. I took my headphones off to go make coffee.....then....WTF!
Uncanny. The narrator in the very first couple of scenes....well.... It could be you!
Sound wise I like that robotic fly buzzing from1.00 to 1.07 & again at 1.27. Thought monzo had made a guest appearance for a minute. The more deeper, darker sounds from 2.39 to 3.00 created a nice contrast before back into your haunting musical underbelly. Preferred your first song but like I said in that review, it's a corker.

  • @Igneous1 Goodluck with the album mate! I'm no expert of course but I can't imagine that there will be too much to do mastering wise as your tracks always sound well mixed.(mastering engineers all over the audiobus universe shake their heads and tut at the rookie LostBoy!! )

  • @crony I love the call to prayer sample? May I ask where you found it? I'm looking for something similar you see.I also loved the strings and although it was very brief I liked whatever their chord sequence was. After that you lost me if I'm honest. It kinda felt like you lost interest yourself at the end and hit duplicate on a four bar loop? No disrespect meant mate.Just my honest opinion. :)

@Halftone Man,that was awesome! Great job! I really like the vibe of the track and you've done a great job on the mix aswell.I think it's cool that you've gone more traditional with your instruments on this track, don't get me wrong,I love all the synthy/electric stuff but it's nice to hear a trumpet, piano and guitars. The drums were cool too...hmm I may have to check out GarageBand now...cos I don't have enough Daw's or drum machines already!! :p

Good effort on the video aswell mate, that must have taken some time to do,lining everything up etc.

...so,you may need a vocalist eh? now then,do I know any vocalists?? ;)

You Sir are an unvarnished flirt :)

Hope you're not offended when I say that I really liked the ambient backing track, primarily. I'm a bit of a philistine when it comes to poetry (and words in general) so I can't really comment on your lyrics, but say that (perhaps) the delivery was a bit quick.

Not offended a bit. As we muttered a bit upthread I find that poetry/short stories are very liked by some, but not by most. All good. In fact I respect anyone who says naw not for me mate rather than someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about telling me how they sussed pentameter in school and here's what you should be doing... The interesting thing (for me) is that your straightforward view was actually very helpful, truth is I left the backing a bit short and as a result suspected that I'd rushed the words; you confirmed that, and for that thank you.

  • Thank you so much for the review, @High5denied!

I think I need to get deeper into that underbelly and miss Monzo in that regards because his own noisy madness somehow gave me permission to at least noodle privately in that manner (Vicar). Ah well. I have Genisys but had put it in the large bin of movies I will surely one day watch on a plane (but never do). Should it be gotten out?

  • Hey, @Igneous1! Thank you for the review!

Mmmm......No. Only the FX grabbed my attention. I'd say if you find yourself with a couple of spare hours to fill, the private noodling would be a more satisfying, rewarding choice.

  • @Igneous1
Thanks, I need to work more on that track...Yes...

    @LostBoy85
Thanks, yes you're right, it's not only a duplicate of 4 bars, but yes, needs improvements, I agree...I just didn't felt inspired, don't know where to go...Needs more work...
I recorded the prayer myself, with the build in mic of my Iphone 5, at Blue Mosque of Istanbul 2 weeks ago... :)

    Supper cool. Really. Quite jealous.

Did you get a release signed?

    :)

  • Bit basic this month but got it done a bit quicker. Back to vocals again. Tried a couple of things in this one with varying degrees of success. Voice probably too low as usual. I have no patience with drum machines but can't bring myself to use loops or a virtual drummer. And surely, as a great man once said, everyone loves a 303...?

  • edited March 2016

@crouchie Heaven 17 on this hand and Shriekback on the other. Mix sounds a bit over-recorded, but that might just be the bass. Love the Gratuitous Acid Loop, immediate bonus award. Really like the 'waiting to get left behind' refrain and the whoahhhh under it. Overall I'd say the second half suggests a better song in here than the first half (which is by no means shoddy). Always been a sucker for some faux gospel with my 303 :) Great nearly-there draft in need (simply my opinion) of some heartbreak/gut-punch/throat-grab-beyond-just-speed during that first sprint....

  • @bluepunk, that's a screamer. It was funny, I wasn't thinking so much punk, as Alice Cooper. Part of it was the vocal, but it was just the whole feel of the piece. Great mix - that guitar sound was wonderful, and the bass came through clearly underneath, which is not easy to do with that level of distortion.

  • @crouchie, what a track. Total funk at the beginning. Love the juxtaposition between all that manic rhythm, and the really strong melody. Vocal was wonderful, great harmonies. Love the dynamic shifts, like the part where you went down to just bass and drums under the voice. Vocal could indeed have been just a touch louder, but that's about as much as I could criticize with the tune.

@Bluepunk great track, like the doom metal feel at the start.

Thank you. Doom & gloom is underrated I feel

Quite a heavy lyric which is accompanied pretty well by a suitably heavy backing. I liked the drums in particular.
Interesting to note that's it's not 'real' guitar, as it sounds like primarily 'guitar driven'.

Cheers for your comments. Yep, she's a heavy subject matter & thought it may suit my very, very meagre guitar knowledge. 3 chords n all that! Thanks Guitarism & thank you for your kind words.

Thanks very much Rick. Ah, it must have been that snake wrapped around my neck while I anxiously vocalised  Been messing with the various mics & dual mic positioning in the Cab room & I'm amazed by the array of tones produced by changing one or both of the different mic choices. It must be paradise for proper guitarists. All those amps, pedals etc for a few quid. Absolute bargain. Cheers again.

  • @Bluepunk sorry it's taken me a few days to comment on your track, this thread is getting harder and harder to keep up with :)

This one sounds heavier than your previous tracks, more grunge than punk to my ears, except for the vocal delivery which is still very punk, but the guitars have slowed down. The intro vocal is really good, it's nice to hear some variety in your vocal tone - I think you could take this kind of thing much further, you've got a great voice and I think you could easily add more range to your singing style. I didn't notice the loss of the deckchair BTW, and just as an aside an actual pop filter is probably cheaper than replacing the missing deckchair :)

To me the mix sounded pretty good, which is lucky considering that it can't be changed :) A bit more bass might be nice, but otherwise it sounded good to my ears.

Also, your absence in February was noted. I hope you have a sick note.

  • Thank u @rickwaugh and @JohnnyGoodyear for your comments, v kind. Wanted it to be a bit rough round the edges (which is of course just an excuse for my very limited production skills) and thereby hopefully keeping a bit of intensity in it. Wanted the bass electronic and rough because all the acoustic-type sounds in it are not usually my thing and I was starting to come out in hives

Please, no. I'm just grateful that you (all of you) can find the time to listen & comment in the first place. It's a confidence builder let alone all the shared technical knowledge.

Damn.....thought I'd body swerved that  Ok as our Gaffer, would it be "cricket" if I make up the missing Feb song at some point soonish? That way the chain will only be kinked & not completely broken! Mmmm. I'm not even convincing myself here..............

Thank you about the vocal/voice. Yes, I will (want to) try. In fact when I first listened back to it I thought "hang on, did I actually sing haribos instead of sneer/shout it?" Bloody hell, look out Max Boyce!

This month: Back room clear out (I've got a corner booked), iPad Air 3 (or whatever they're gunna call it), & a proper pop filter. Mic to follow later in year. I only need the talent now (is there an app for that) to make the most all these wonderful iOS music thingies. Thanks again.

  • Of course it wasn't just @Bluepunk who thought he could skive off February, @LostBoy85 was also absent. Were you both smoking behind the bike sheds or something?

This will be my final SOTMC entry with my Formbank stuff. I've decided to look to finalising the tracks I've done so far, so I won't be doing any new tracks. Without wanting to sound self-promoting, there's some other recent tracks on my Soundcloud page, as well as the SOTMC contributions, which will be included in an upcoming album of some kind .

Overall the vibe on this one is a bit too jazz-fusion-y for my tastes, but I did want to say good luck with the album - hope it goes well.

  • @Igneous1

Very nice 80's pop sounding. Reminds me of something Michael Jackson could be singing over. I detect a bit of Devo too. I like it. I want to be able to Gadget like that. :)

  • @crouchie I thought the vocals (and the vocal melody) were much better than the underlying music this month. and like JG I thought the second half of the song was better than the first.

Unfortunately I can't hear a relentless 303 riff without getting a flashback of being knee-deep in mud, trying to survive a bad acid trip while my ears are being blasted by Josh Wink's Higher State of Consciousness, circa Glastonbury 97, so in my case I will have to deduct points for that one, for personal reasons. :#

For me personally, I think the musical backing would have been better if there was more in the way of hooks, it sounds a bit cobbled together, and I think that someone with your sense of melody could probably do better.

However I'm really glad that you're back to doing vocals - you've got a great voice and a good feel for a catchy melody.

Ok, so I've still got some more listening to do. This is a song a submitted a few months ago. I re-worked it, re-recorded the vocals, remixed, re-mastered(I use that term very loosely.). Would love to get your thoughts again on it.

    I hope it's close to being semi-done-ish.

I've listened to the song in my car, on apple earbuds, my Audio-technica HeadPhones, several stereo systems, and a few different PC's. On one PC here at work, there are a few times in the song where it seems like the drum fill gets drowned out or looses it's OOMPH......or volume. But, only when I listen on the one Computer, doesn't matter if it's with earbuds, phones, or a mini speaker system.

Here is the song the first time around, if you would like to compare. If you don't want to subject yourself to it 2X's in a row, just listen to the 2nd link, that is the newest version of da song. Thanks!

    New Version ------->>>>

Yep. Caught! I'm on line number 327 of the 1000 lines of self imposed punishment.

"I must not miss another month........" Wish we could've had copy & paste back in the day instead of tracing paper. Mind, all that writing lines stuff was good for wrist flexibility. ...... & I mean for practicing drum rudiments!

No problem, Richard. This track did go off 'on one' somewhat.

Cheers also to everyone else who commented, @High5denied has 'Gadget' become an adjective now :)
So, I'II now be returning to rework the 15 tracks - again ! I don't expect much in the way of reaction to whatever I release, but it's a project I want to get finished off nonetheless. I released my first 'Formbank' album in 2003 (on CD-R !), so I know that this is my 'unwelcome Jazz' (Eno Quote) material :)

I shall be returning to all the SOTMC comments on these tracks, to take some of them on board re. the reworkings.
    Thanks for all those.

  • @Igneous1 Good for you as regards completing your project. If you get lonely I hear rumors there are other men 'on hiatus' from SOTMC who gather behind sheds and smoke cigarettes...

Thanks @richardyot ,honest as ever and much appreciated for that. I suppose sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The idea was for a rougher, crunchy feel, but I appreciate that probably hasn't gone as I intended. Sorry bad acid ruined 303s for u. Tragedy. Equally sad is the fact that I unashamedly try to squeeze one into every bloody track I do
