    Hello,

    I've missed february for 4 days ;)
    So here's my new track.

    I'm listening to tracks of this month and post feedback very soon.
    Enjoy! :)

    Although I've used it as a touchstone before this track could/should be in the movie version of Homeland that will probably never get made. Cross-cultural in every way. I like it a lot. What were your main apps here?

  • @theconnactic - Like others have mentioned, this instantly felt like a very 70's jazzy/funk groove - which is a good thing. And a nice, clean sound production-wise speaking.

    @JohnnyGoodyear - Also agree with another comment here that some more laidback vocals would fit better on your track. Kinda comes together in the last 1/4 of the song. Lyrics are very good - I'm jealous and I can never seem to string 2 words together on those few times I've tried writing lyrics.

    @orchardman - A nice little Indian Hippy vibe you've cooked up. Love love the breakdown vocal chant thing that happens around 3:12-3-14! Very cool sounding!!

    @Igneous1 - Always enjoy your stuff - this one maybe a little less than others. Started out good, but I was losing interest by the last half.

    @crony - Interesting skittering beat at beginning. Like the bass and groove as it kicks off - and the vocals that come in around .42-43 is cool. This seems a little unfinished though as the last half isn't as exciting.

  • Thank you very much, @Halftone!

  • here's my entry for this month - I was extra ambitious and made a quick video for this track (my first video for a song ever!). I just gathered some free stock footage from various places and quickly edited them together.

    This song started last summer with the electric piano chords created in Garageband. I exported that loop into Loopy and added a drumloop, bassline (from Tera Synth I think, or maybe Thor), and a few other synth loops. Then the song sat unfinished for a while. I found the vocal sample after that and added - but still the song went nowhere. With the latest update to Garageband in January, I thought I'd bring things full circle and took all the loops from Loopy I'd made and brought them back into GB. I decided to take out my initial drum loop, and used a GB Drummer track. I took away a few loops, and added a few new ones (piano and horns, a pad synth) from internal Garageband instruments. I wasn't expecting the mix to turn out as good as it did coming from GBand... So I'm extra happy with the final results.

  • @Halftone Much to like here. And very interesting to hear your stop-start process. Great sample by the way (but then you knew that already :)). I think the only liability with such a nice find like that is it may (or does in this case) leave this listener wanting to hear her tell the rest of the story :)

  • The Missus is away (in Hawaii no less, lucky bugger :)) and so I spent some time revisiting an old flame (kinda) this afternoon. Story-wise anyway. It's a spoken piece about AI etc.

  • @Igneous1, great groove in that track, great mix. I was nodding my head to the music. But it needed something more in the second half, kind of lost some interest for me about the 2/3ds mark.

  • @crony, excellent, except for the last third or so, where it kind of went stale. First part was very cool. Love the call to prayer, sat very well on top of the synths. Mix was spot on.

  • Hey, @Igneous1: the intro of your song is excellent, precisely evoking my one of my favourite genres, that pop-funk that was so prolific in the early 80's. Then it gets busier, reminding me a little bit of Alan Parson's Project. I was almost expecting a guitar solo, but I guess that will have to wait until Gadget has audio tracks, won't it? Nice track, and hope you reconsider stop posting on SOTM: I released my own album, I am about to release a second one, but am still sharing here: it's a lot of fun!

  • @Halftone, excellent track. Nice mix. Very languid feel to it, love the bit of vocals. I also enjoyed the instrumental variety - lots in there, but it didn't sound like anything was added just for the heck of it, it fit into the mix well. Ending was pretty cool too.

    I had a feeling you would want more Johnny! Me too - if only I could sing. Or find a longer vocal sample. Someday I hope to do a more complete vocal track if I can find a singer to collaborate with... Until then I'm happy whenever I come across a good sample I can use.

  • Hey, @crony: I love this kind of hi-tempo-dance music, seems a lot D&Bish for me, which is good. I liked the final, hypnotic synth. Nicely done!

  • @JohnnyGoodyear, love the spoken Turing piece. A wonderful story, love the way music moves behind it. It was a piece that made me think.

  • Hey, @Halftone: great intro, really! Congratulations for mixing inside GB: the result is excellent, and from my own experience I know it's no easy feat. Loved the sampled voice, whoever is the artist, she is quite a singer. The brassy sound just after the first vocal part does its job well, and GB internal Piano sounded better than I'm used to expect. Congratulations!

    Thank you Mister Rick. There's been a lot of talk and supposition about AI, especially recently, and as my first wife often mentioned the only way you can make sense of stuff for yourself Johnny is to make shit up.

  • Nice work, @JohnnyGoodyear: this song deserved to be on a sci-fi movie soundtrack. The lyrics are very good, you use your voice quite well and the the pad and glitch sounds of the background are very well chosen. Hats off!

    Yeah I'm liking this more than your other entry

  • @theconnactic great guitar playing and production as always.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear after playing your track I think the singing style works I'm just it sure it goes with the musical accompaniment. Perhaps a little more venom in that as well.

  • @crony I liked the production and the vocal sample. Overall I struggle with style of music (it must be an age thing) so I don't feel qualified to comment.

  • @Igneous1 the bass sound and riff at the start reminded me very much of Vangelis. I was waiting for Jon Anderson to start singing. Nice overall production but I think the track just sort of fizzles out at the end.

  • @Halftone nice laid back track and the overall sound was great. I especially liked the use of the strings and the horns.

  • @Halftone
    Really nice production, nice ambiance ! Not crazy about the trumpet from 2:10 to 2:40, I would have listen to a guitar solo instead of a new type of sounds, I find a bit less integrated to the track.

    Thanks for your comments, and as lots of people are telling me, I must work harder to the last part of the track ! And I must admit I became a bit lazy at some point ;)

    @JohnnyGoodyear
    Nice ambiance, in a concept album, why not but it's really too much spoken to me...

    Thanks for your comment, I used patterning, elastic drums, and sector. Then a mininova for the synth, and cubasis for sequencing. The sample from the prayer has been recorded with my Iphone live next week at Istanbul Blue Mosque. (amazing place)

    @orchardman
    I turn 40 next tuesday... ;)

    @theconnactic
    Thanks for your comment ! I'll keep digging the end of the track...

  • @orchardman You've channeled your inner hippies to perfection because the sun is blasting down here this morning. Thanks! Catchy melody & beautifully sung by your good lady. Great playing & the Indian flavour that was unexpected works well underneath the singing. Cleverly fused a few styles into your song combining Indian, folk, Celt & some harder edged bits making it an interesting, enjoyable listen. Please, keep channeling as a few more days of sun would be most welcome........so would a Vindaloo in the Yurt tonight! :wink:

  • @Igneous1 Ah, a sad day as I listen to your last Formbank tune but I'm also looking forward to seeing where you go next musically. Glad you went out on a bang & kept to the Formbank formula. It's been a positive experience to my senses so cheers. I've noticed in previous songs (like this one) that you can seamlessly change the time signature or alter where the snare/beat hits to achieve different feels during your songs. Clever.
    The very best of luck with your album project & I'll be pulling up a chair to have a good listen when it's released. In the meantime, congrats on producing some great stuff during your Formbank time. :smiley:

    Thanks for the feedback, perhaps I should have started channeling few months ago. Not sure about the vinaloo I think I will stick with the saag when I'm out in sunny Swansea tonight. Perhaps where I'm getting the Indian vibe from.

  • @crony Deep, thumping intro alerting the ageing dance muscles to get ready for a Saturday workout! Hypnotically beckoning & daring us not to move, jig or dance. I succumbed & will suffer for it later. Into the tight groove with nice percussive bits coming in & out & then the prayers. That certainly bought a different but good element to your party. I appreciate what you've made here & reminds what makes a good dance track. Great stuff, well played, mixed & produced. I enjoyed the second half as you've bought it down a gear to allow rest & breathing space. Nice abrupt ending works & leaves my senses wanting more although my body needs some R & R now! :smiley:

    Pleasure, it's a great tune. Yes, i think you'd need to have started on the 1st August last year to prevent the winter wetness we've been enduring down here :wink: Keep channeling....... please!

  • @Halftone Well done on successfully completing your first music vid. It was really comforting to see a spinning LP on a turntable. The gentle sway of the stylus goes well with your song. No coin on top needed for ballast either! Some great close ups of the playing, particularly the bit with the keys of the piano from one end. A well played song that has a relaxing, cool feel emphasised to me by the drums. They have a wonderful easy feel. The bass drum skin sounds like it's been loosened right off to complement the laid back groove. As been said, the vocal totally works & more would be ok but even without, your song completely holds its own. Nice, nice. :smiley:
