@crouchie
I rather dug it (as the young folk say), I liked the energy and I too got vibes of Heaven 17 esque stuff. it builds effectively, in my view.
On to my usual technical obsessive points - in the mix I noticed a lack of low-end in the kick / bass and overall Ithought it was a very good work-in-progress 'demo' (if you don't mind me saying that)
Good and affirming point. So many of the things I've done here I realize (soon afterwards) are so much further along than I might have managed fiddling about, but require another full go to be all they could be. I'm grateful for that.
It really depends on what the intention is. I'm sucker for a pretty tune and a groovy beat, and that's obviously the basis for my comments, but it's subjective. I guess most of the world likes a tune and a groove in their music, but you might not be looking to please most of the world, so it depends on your intent.
But anyway, I think even crunchy and rough can still have hooks, Pixies or Sonic Youth for example did that combination quite well, I think that to be memorable music has to have some memorable musical elements/phrases or whatever in there. Does that make sense?
Something I came to realise in my own more experimental tracks was that while there was an atmosphere that I liked, the music itself was a bit aimless and meandering, because I hadn't worked hard enough to put more memorable phrases or hooks in there.
Good advice all, v grateful. Lots to think about in there. It's really only the Heaven 17 thing that has upset me...
I know what u mean. I don't think I use DrumPerfect very well really. I think the demo comment applies to all my stuff! They never get any further...
Hey, @crouchie: nice tune! I'd like it even more if the vocals - which are really well performed - were a bit higher. Other than this, very good mix. Very good bass line and drums. It was all programmed, or did you record some of those synths live? Well done!
@High5denied: nice rock'n'roll song! Loved the guitar work and the drum breaks for the guitar riffs to shine. Congrats!
Well, here goes another one for you to listen: my new song, born in a hot Brazilian afternoon. "Frenesi" is the Portuguese word for "Frenzy". Enjoy the listening! Dimitri.
Thank u, v kind. All programmed I'm afraid!
If you played during the recording using a MIDI keyboard, it also counts as recording live for me. Writing even mildly complex arrangements directly on a piano roll isn't an easy feat at all. If you did it, congrats for that too.
They did grow up to be attractive older men! Of course, as a man whose own nose was broken seven times playing rugby I have a fairly generous opinion as to good looks...
Just found out Heaven 17 was the BEF that supported Tina Turner...
@JohnnyGoodyear The fella on the right looks a bit, well, asymmetrical doesn't he?
@crouchie Great to hear your vocals again & back where they belong...at the front of proceedings. Your voice is too good to play just bit parts & with the added bonus of some succulent harmonies, it's a welcome return.
I dig the rhythm sections groove. Jaggedness, tight & throwing out a funky feel holding it all down. My receptors were particularly enjoying sections .35 to .52 & again 1.32 to 1.48. Those parts were urgent, in yer face & catchy & may have that roughness you were after.
If you do decide to revisit/remix, I'm sure there's more than enough experience & knowledge on here to assist you in achieving that sharper, more cutting feel. It's there, I sense it & an emphasising or exaggerating of that edginess may just be enough. I really enjoyed it & I found it impossible not to jig away into Heaven.......no, it's ok, I won't say the number that comes after 16 in case it drives you to smash up every copy of Penthouse & Pavement the planet possesses. You'll probably have to join the queue
Thanks for listening! Appreciate the comments. Now, I need to continue to listen to the rest of the songs on this here post!
@High5denied Ah man! I remember your song well. One of my favourites from last year. It's a great rock song with lots of twists & turns to keep me on my toes. What I really like is how you screw beautifully with the timing senses in a kinda "Rush" way. The sections .40 to .58, 1.22 to 1.40, 2.03 to 2.20 & your ending.
See you've dispensed with the longer intro & that works well. I can hear your vocals & love that Mountain Dew line, it just fits so well. Maybe they could come up a tad as you've a voice that sounds good, raw & untamed which completely suits this track. Let 'em 'av it full on!
I need the section 2.20 to 2.43 on loop as it's an air guitarists (me) dream. The riff then solo is dirty & scrumptious. It all sounds/feels tighter than version 1. More space for everything to breathe means can pick little intricacies out now.
I heard something click (could be the snare, see what others say) at 1.09, 2.02 & 2.19. I only say this as you've obviously worked very hard on this version & it may be something that is/isn't an issue. Well done on sticking with it & definitely a huge improvement.
Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to write that @Bluepunk I appreciate it.
I will check out the times you mention you heard clicks, cuz I want those nasty things gone.......
Ya I've been working hard on it, thanks fer noticing. I'm no expert that's for sure.
@crouchie
I love the voice, I wish I could remix it, cos I really don't like the production...Sorry...Except for the drumloop, everything else sound "cheap" to me. Once again, it's a big YES for the voices...
@JohnnyGoodyear
I got two release on different labels, but it was 15 years ago...It was on compilations, and they sold 2 or 3...lol...Okay more, but it didn't work at all
@theconnactic
Well...It's well played, but I've the sensation to listen more or less to the same sonorities you already submitted.
I guess I'm not too much into brazilian fusion...Sorry...
Thank you for the compliment, @crony! Brazilian fusion - I never thought it that way, but it sounds nice!
Well you're welcome to the stems if you want to mess around with it, can Dropbox 'em if ur serious
Thanks mate. Lots of v honest stuff from everyone. Reckon I will be keeping more to the style of my other stuff in future, just keeping the strong vocal theme instead.
I think Heaven 17 did a couple of decent tunes, but I know they completely massacred Don't Fear The Reaper in their later years. Worth checking out to truly understand the horror...
I always try to midi everything and make my own loops. Using other loops just feels like assembling a jigsaw. Mind u, that's probably why my stuff is so bloody patchy!
Talking about horror, my eyes are strangely drawn to that pic that @JohnnyGoodyear posted of the offending parties. They both look like extras from Peaky Blinders but Martin Ware with those eyes.........he should be joining the "Saw" family of films and save the SFX crew a job making the mask for Jigsaw!
I didn't really expect to have any new material this month, but here we are. Very different than the last— a work in progress but maybe not? I find the more I try to do with it, the less I like it. I suspect you lot will have a love/hate reaction as well.
@aaronpc I like it. Was pleased when the vocal came in. The fact that it wasn't Eartha Kitt siren-ing something about an underwater land where green-skinned women of my choosing were available to me for the asking was a slight disappointment, but the overall vibe was like something from a parallel sixties TV universe with extra menace. What were your weapons here?
@JohnnyGoodyear Thanks, yeah, this one is hard to put a wrapper on, but that's kind of my happy place. The backbone of this song is the Ostinato app. Great app, but very specific in its sound, so this may be a one off unless he's able to open it up a bit. You'll also hear some musical saw, recorded at home, and an African instrument called an adungu, from a sampled instrument. Everything beyond that is a trade secret. Oh, and Eartha would be great, but I'm holding out for Yma Sumac.
Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo!
Great name and a five octave range, s'gonna piss Eartha right off. They died within a month or so of each other in 2008, so samples it's going to have to be I'm afraid. And both perished from colon cancer, which is somewhat sadly coincidental.
ADDITION: By-the-by, Ostinato-wise I like Scott's stuff, but I think that Unity makes it very hard for him to get it going with IAA or AB. Pity.
@crony Right away I think, I could be listening to Prodigy. Some really good use of panning in the song. I like how the main bass through the song is it's own melody that seems like a perfect cross between a Bass Synth, and a Techno Bass Drum. Good stuff, I like it.
@Halftone Very nice. The drums sound like the real deal. When the piano comes in that's like the icing on the song, then from there, there is a new lead synth that comes in every so often. They all sound really great. The piano is my favorite, along with the Brass Synths. Great work!
@JohnnyGoodyear Great story, reminds me of listening to Lois Lawrys book "The Giver". The tunes behind the story go really well with it. Perfect AI sounds.
@Bluepunk Oh ya, right from the first Guitar Chord. Love it. I really like the guitar tone. It is so good. The Bass sits really well in the mix. Cool cool cool Vocals. What you using for guitar in this one? Guitarism like yer others? The only thing I would change on it is the ending. To abrupt. The guitar fiff, and even the tone is reminding me of someone...............Damnit, can't think of it........ I use Mountain Dew, you use OxyContin. Props for that man!
@crouchie I wasn't sure how you were going to get vocals to work with this song when it started out. And......Dang, you got em in there, and they fit really well. The vocals sit really well in the mix. Something I need to work on getting better at. Harmony vocals sound really great. I like what the main synth changes into, as far as what it sounds like at about 2:30. It has a better sound to it. Nice song. Fun to listen to. The music is energetic and fast.
@theconnactic So, if I heard one of your songs on the radio. I'd be able to pick it out that it was YOU for sure.......... You have that Salsa vibe, or Santana feel to your songs. The guitar work is so good. It sometimes makes me forget the Bass guitar in there. That is quite good too. Mixed well. Great song. I love the ending, 3 or 4 guitar parts going on.
@aaronpc Thought the song was good till it hit the 1:36 part. That's where it really starts to shine! The different instruments, and synth riffs, they work really well here. @1:36 and on, it becomes a really great song. Very nicely done.
This is a song I worked on about a year ago. All on my ipod touch. It's only 30 sec. Mainly because I wanted to see what the ol' pod was capable of. I think I may revisit it, and make it a full on song, possibly with vocals. I don't remember all the apps I used to create the sounds I did, so it would be a complete re-record.
Question: I think I played the drums through DrumJam, basically to the recorded music. What is the best way to record/do da drums for electronic music? If I have the drums programmed to sync to the tempo, is it possible to loop parts, and then easily combine these loops with other sections of drums with it sounding ok?
1) Hey, @High5denied! The best way (for me!) is to design my own synthesised using any capable synth (I enjoy IMS-20, Polysixx, Magellan and DXi for the task). Check out some examples:
a) drums synthesised with Polisixx:
b) with Magellan:
c) with iMS20:
d) with DXi:
If you have no patience or time to design drum sounds, any good iOS Drum Machine will do. iMS and Polysixx include drum machines by the way. Perhaps even AP's Lyra have something good inside it. Or BM2 (is it still on sale?). Or Gadget.
2) Yes, absolutely. That's where the new Garageband excels, for example. But as long as the drums are synced, it can be done with any DAW that allow for looping/copy&paste regions.
