Im retraining to become a drug and alcohol counsellor ( The counsellor bit. Ive already got a masters degree on the drugs n alcohol side of things ) So inspired by this heres a happy, uplifting song... Not!
I can't make any adjustments to levels as this is the only audio file of it I have left. I stupidly deleted all other versions from Cubasis. Nightmare as there are some hotspots that will have to stay. Im uploading right now so I don't bugger things up even more.
I could have done with a lecture from you a long, long time ago
Like the 'seriousness' of this. By that I don't just mean the subject matter but the delivery. This style of vocal is easy to over-egg or make sound a bit tongue in cheek. I never felt that Johnny Rotten was a very scary chap, more just a sarcastic (literal) punk. Much as my fifteen year old self loved him While he was right subsequently that 'anger is an energy' a lot of punk seemed more shouty than really fucking committed (as it were). Young men do a lot of shouting....but this is far more of a sober/dire warning and the better for that.
Shame for the losing of the files, but makes it what it is and I shall not add anything about mix etc (probably unqualified anyway). There are a couple of bits towards the end where you could still add stuff however, specifically I think some double-tracking of the voice would add some distinction/demarcation and also help the crescendo.
cheers, rico
Generous review, thank you. Interesting actually, some folks like this one, some not so much. I wonder if it's a better gauge to be liked a lot by a little or a little by a lot? I know the answer in poetry, but find myself less certain in music. Probably explains why I am more a poet than a musician
i vote " a lot by a little " .
I got here thru poetry as well, me tinks we are sentenced to the flying leap.
delicious tune. fab riffs sauteed in a silky smooth sauce...wonderful that them GB piano chords could simmer for three seasons and then arrive so tasty !
thanks
Hey, @Bluepunk: very nice rock'n'roll song. Liked a lot the double-kick drum passages, as well as all the guitar riffs. Quite a heavy song! Congrats.
Failure or success? I like this perspective:
"I did things in my 30s that were ignored by the world, that could have been quickly labeled a failure. Here’s a classic example; in 1974 I did a movie called Phantom of the Paradise. Phantom of the Paradise, which was a huge flop in this country. There were only two cities in the world where it had any real success: Winnipeg, in Canada, and Paris, France. So, okay, let’s write it off as a failure. Maybe you could do that.
But all of the sudden, I’m in Mexico, and a 16-year-old boy comes up to me at a concert with an album - a Phantom of the Paradise soundtrack- and asks me to sign it. I sign it. Evidently I was nice to him and we had a nice little conversation. I don’t remember the moment, I remember signing the album (I don’t know if I think I remember or if I actually remember). But this little 14 or 16, whatever old this guy was… Well I know who the guy is now because I’m writing a musical based on Pan’s Labyrinth; it’s Guillermo del Toro.
The work that I’ve done with Daft Punk it’s totally related to them seeing Phantom of the Paradise 20 times and deciding they’re going to reach out to this 70-year-old songwriter to get involved in an album called Random Access Memories.
So, what is the lesson in that? The lesson for me is being very careful about what you label a failure in your life. Be careful about throwing something in the round file as garbage because you may find that it’s the headwaters of a relationship that you can’t even imagine it’s coming in your future."

@Bluepunk
Wow such a nice comment, thanks !
Listened to your track, I preferred the previous one, because of the production mainly.
I'm not crazy about the chorus on the voice, all the time I mean, on certain part it's good, but not on all the track. From 0:14 to 0:26 : ok, then stop the chorus.
Once again, for me, drums are too clean, and too complicated for the style, sometimes sounds unreal, like between 1:53 to 1:57, also there's too much crash, needs some breathing and variations sometimes. I like the ending also
Please, make it more "dirty" ! And please, backup your tracks properly...!!!
ha, splendido, never thought
.. ( insert grinning headshake emoji )
@JohnnyGoodyear Thank you. I could have done with that lecture not so long, long ago Very valid points about punk. I'd never thought hard enough about the "delivery" of punk & I get what you mean. Has already got me thinking about future vocals...........what I'd like to say.........how I want to/am able to actually deliver them. The singing part I dread & now my DIY pop filter (my trusted mesh deck chair) has died, it didn't feel right. I'm off to the Garden centre to get a new one. "No Mr Shopkeeper, I don't want to sit in it, I want to sing through it." Mmmm, this is going to be interesting.
Oh yeah @crony I've learnt some hard lessons this Feb/Mar. I deleted better, harder versions of this song without those Zildjian 20inch Rock Crashes splitting the ear drums of all in front of the drummer. Had MIDI nightmares (sorted by Cubasis) & THAT was all down to me as well! I'm not taking enough care. Thanks for the reminder & review. Agree with you about the too busy drums as well. I'm still aching by the way....good dance tune.
Thank you @theconnactic I still find it hard to believe that I am able to make any type of guitar sound at all. Guitarism has allowed me as a non player to play 3 or 4 chords in a distorted manor. Honestly, that's bloody magic to me. Just downloaded the Enkl amps pack. Oh yeah......they're good. Now....what do all these knobs do? No, no, no leave them alone....
thanks for your comments. I totally agree about the drums - all thanks to the Drummer feature in Garageband - I love all the fills it magically added.
@theconnactic Hey dude,I enjoyed your piece.A head bobber for sure.Weirdly the only thing I picked up critique wise was that I wanted some type of reverb on the flute,it sounded good but way too dry for me.Maybe just some reverb...or more reverb,on the whole track would sound nicer and give it a little more ambience?? Don't know for sure,but definitely the flute Great guitar work at 2 mins,nice lift.
Cheers
Leo
@JohnnyGoodyear Hello mate,I liked the lyrics of your first track but wasn't really sold on the style of their delivery.I think it's def worth trying the sadder approach. The change up at the end was better but a bit louder to my ears than the earlier vocals.
I hope this helps man
Leo
@Bluepunk great track, like the doom metal feel at the start.
Thanks Mister. Am going to see what I can do on a mellower version this week. I've got to work, Madam's in Hawaii, dog needs walked, suppose to be storms in Austin the whole time; should be the perfect backdrop for channeling any available misery etc
@orchardman Hey man,well I think you definitely channelled your inner hippy and brought some "India" to the party! I think it's the best vocal I've heard (your wife? ) sing out of the few songs I've heard of yours.She did a great job.
I really like the chanty breakdown and the music in general,I wasn't however such a fan of how far you panned the lead instruments between 4-5 mins.I just felt you panned them too far,did you go all left and all right on them? It's maybe because they were the only things in the whole song that I perceived to do so,anyway,then everything settled again when the vocalist came back in.
I also found to my ears the kick drum was too heavy and a bit distracting because of it.I only listened on my Sony mdr 7506's.
A nice enjoyable couple of listens though for sure.
Leo
Hey, @LostBoy85: I really like it dry. Thank you for the review and compliments! Dimitri.
@Halftone I really love your entry this month, it's beautifully restrained and laid back, not an inch of fat on it, every part adds to the whole and every element is its own hook. Terrific stuff. Great vibe throughout, love all the melodies, the bass line, the laid back groove (and the GB drummer is awesome throughout!).
The video is cool too, the vignetting ties all the visuals together and it's uncanny how the drumming seems to be in time.
The vocal also adds another dimension to it, you should definitely find a vocalist to collaborate with, because then the sky's the limit.
@Halftone Man,that was awesome! Great job! I really like the vibe of the track and you've done a great job on the mix aswell.I think it's cool that you've gone more traditional with your instruments on this track,don't get me wrong,I love all the synthy/electric stuff but it's nice to hear a trumpet,piano and guitars.The drums were cool too...hmm I may have to check out GarageBand now...cos I don't have enough Daw's or drum machines already!!
Good effort on the video aswell mate,that must have taken some time to do,lining everything up etc.
...so,you may need a vocalist eh? now then,do I know any vocalists??
@orchardman,
Works well overall, has a Fairport Convention feel to these lugs. The vocals, though very clear and strong have some slight pitching issues and the kick drum is rather squashed perhaps. Otherwise well done, particularly regarding the instrumentation.
@JohnnyGoodyear
I liked the instrumentation and I thought the last third worked well, better in my view than the more angry first two thirds. I felt there was too much fx on the vocal too, which distracted from the main vocal. The accompaniment was nicely understated.
@Halftone
Wasn't that keen on the chord progression, but that's just a personal taste thing. The track was well constructed nonetheless, the drums in particular flowed well and the sparse piano melodies in the first part. Perhaps the delay levels on the vox were a bit high in the mix (?)
@crony
A nicely frenetic mix of rhythmic things, but doesn't really develop too much to me. The sample works well and there's a good use of space in the mix
@Bluepunk
Quite a heavy lyric which is accompanied pretty well by a suitably heavy backing. I liked the drums in particular.
Interesting to note that's it's not 'real' guitar, as it sounds like primarily 'guitar driven'.
@theconnactic
Not really my thing but sounds well executed, those crashes were a bit loud though. Nicely constructed, with some cool rhythm guitar throughout.
@JohnnyGoodyear love that spoken word effort, and I'm not usually a huge fan of spoken word stuff, but the story was really engaging and had lots of great touches, like the AI algorithm just being programmed to drift. Great stuff.
@JohnnyGoodyear 'Adven Turing'
Hope you're not offended when I say that I really liked the ambient backing track, primarily. I'm a bit of a philistine when it comes to poetry (and words in general) so I can't really comment on your lyrics, but say that (perhaps) the delivery was a bit quick.
@theconnactic
Wow, echoing comments on could totally see that in a movie, or more so a TV show. Like Chips. Very nice song, easy listening, and quite a fun song to listen to as well. Things are very well mixed and blend together very well. Excellent work!
@JohnnyGoodyear
The song starts out very subtle. The light drums, synth, and I think a guitar strum here and there. Sounds really good. I love your voice. My personal opinion: I think the vocals for the first half of the song would be better without out the delay, or such a long delay? I actually like the first half of the song more than the second half. Which, really I like both parts, but you know, if someone forced me to choose.... Lyrics are mint. Song is great.
@orchardman
Sweet! Lovely folk tune with some great elements combined together. The vocals are absolutely beautiful. Damn good. Right at 1:25ish I love that transition. The guitar's, drums, indian instruments, production. Very very well done. I love this song. Props! What are you using for the Indian flavored instrument?
More reviews to come of yer songs, and I'll post one of mine that I re-hashed after much work.
