I almost refrained from starting this thread because I knew I would eventually get to evaluating things objectively. And that always leads me to a lot of frustration with Apple.
For my own therapy I think I'll just list everything at once and be done:
1. The Lightning adapter- this was introduced the same year USB 3 was added to MacBook Pro. which means we had four years of entirely unnecessary USB2 transfer speeds on iOS.
2. 16GB storage - no one cheered when they updated the minimum to 32 yesterday. why?because it should have been done the year iTunes introduced HD videos. Absolutely silly to consider the iPhone a media device but not have the capacity for more than one single feature length movie. (No I'm not interested in discussing the idea that they expect you to stream movies). Not to mention photos, music, apps
3. Retina screens. Sorry but this is now marketing bs. I love the iPhone screens because they look great, but the introduction of an HD screen was only noteworthy one year, 2012 I think. Since 2012 it's just tiny improvements on the same great screen, which is fine... Just no longer leading the market or innovating.
4. Ram upgrades to 2GB came about 2 years late. Again, fine but not market-leading. We all spent way too many years having our Safari tabs constantly reload because RAM was insufficient.
OK, Done. I feel better. Though I've just come to realize that the company which has sold 1 billion phones can't be the company that I expect to offer a "premium" experience. Apple has become the ordinary and that is what they will give us.
So they remove the headphone jack to streamline production costs and increase profit and call it "progress" when they remove choice and convenience for the user.
But I'll be honest i'm still tempted since the 7 will be my first iphone, I've held out this long and i have so many apps to make it worth the purchase. But the cost has always put me off, how can an iphone justifiably cost the same as an iPad pro?
but anyway I assume that the lightening jack/headphone adapter will be made by many third parties and will be cheap enough to have a few lying around and whenever I want to use the iphone with my other ipads i'll use the lightening connector anyway so it's an annoyance I could probably live with....
This pretty much sums it up: https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/07/courage/
Look, just have the courage to move over to Android phones - they're really good now, you know. iPads are better for music and tablet stuff than Android tablets. However, Android is really leading it where phones and televisions are concerned.
Wide color gamut is anything but marketing BS. It's a bit abstract unless you know your sh!t around color theory but it's certainly a high end feature not found on many displays on this planet. It allows you to display color ranges that are simply impossible to show in the normal sRGB color space.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide-gamut_RGB_color_space
The iPhone 6s is still on sale, and it's a very good phone. You just have to decide whether you want the better camera and splash resistance of the 7, or the headphone socket on the 6s. Personally I would still choose the 6s because I know with absolute certainty that the lack of headphone socket would annoy me, for example, when I need to recharge the phone but want to listen to music on a long flight etc...
Cool, that's good to know @brambos ! Anyway, I'd rather just hear "iPhone screen is great and we made it better". The marketing hyperbole irks me.
Not true. The iPad 4 will receive the update, its 32 bits. It's hardware related, iPad 2 and 3 are really old now in mobile devices terms. I'm surprised the 2 received iOS 9 to be honest.
Yes back up should be included for free and no excuses there Apple
Without further comment on their chosen direction, I would buy stock in 6s this morning if you could do such a thing (no Apple jokes needed), they're going to sell a lot of them for awhile....
running the latest iOS. where do i pick up the shirt?
Even better: I wish they stopped bragging about specs. They never did that until Android/Samsung started the specs arms race. As a user, we shouldn't have to know nor care about how much RAM or how many processor cores go into our devices. Only their engineers should have to worry about that. Especially because just comparing specs, megahertzes and gigabytes is essentially meaningless.
A device with 2Gb of RAM and a hopelessly inefficient OS can still feel a lot more sluggish than a device with 1Gb and super optimized software stacks. Gigaflops mean very little when they're wasted on badly coded software threads.
In the past (i.e. before people cared about the innards of their phones) they focused on telling how their innovations were meaningful to me as a customer: how they would make sense in my life. Anything else is just technocratic distraction that I don't particularly care for. But I'm afraid they lost that a bit when Steve passed away and they fell into (or were forced into?) the "one-up the specs of the competition"-trap.
Coming back to the screen: I agree that just telling about wide-gamut capabilities seems meaningless unless they can show how it adds value to my life. For instance by telling how it allows photographers to do image editing on the device without overcorrecting their blues and greens etc. It's a nice feature, but not something I would count as a true innovation (like how the iPod's scrollwheel enabled us to easily browse large collections of music with much less effort than using traditional 4-way cursor systems we were used to back then).
Nicely put @brambos
I'll second that! I just realized that I pay $.99 per month (that's not killing me) for 50gb and my phone is 64gb. I don't back up to the cloud anyway, but come to think of it, i haven't backed up to iTunes recently either. I guess I'll be doing that today....
That was originally my plan, buy the 6S when the 7 came out but the new camera has won me over since I make a living in the visual arts, having that kind of camera in my pocket all the time will be very useful.
Can you not charge and use the headphones with the new CCK3? if not surely someone will come up with a solution. It is annoying of course when it wasn't a problem before.
Someone in another forum came up with the genius idea of using the lightning 'charging dock' as it has a headphone output and use the '3,5mm dongle' when on the run
That might indeed be the solution for me when I dock the iPhone to my laptop for charging and syncing.
The new CCK3's Lightning port is for 'charging only' as I've understood it.
Sa a more suitable solution for that would indeed be USB-Headphones as they could be used with both CCK's...
Then again I might opt to get either the CambrindeAudio or Dragonfly external DAC.
The charging doc is a quite handy option...(Already got one for my iPhone 5).
@Samu
Do you have any suggestions for a Cheap simple DAC you would recommend for just improving the sound of the iPad for jamming purposes? Would only require Sound out and a USB midi input. Basic small cheap dependable and with mains input. Can power the iPad if possible.
Korg's Plug-Key
http://www.korg.com/us/products/computergear/plugkey/
(I'm hoping Korg will release a version of it with sound-input too).
iPhone 7 32 GB $649 dólares (€769 in Spain).
I get really 'tempted' by this video with Korg Microkey S and 'Plug-Key'
In these times, you should be able to pay for 51, 52...63,5 Gb or whatever because tecnologically that can be applied automatically.
But Apple earn more money (again) offering plans that satisfy (?) to eveybody.
That's a nifty little travel setup and with wood end cheeks
Another annoyance: I plug my MIDI keyboard into the USB-to-lightning adapter, then listen to the sound on headphones, how?
Use a Bluetooth Midi-Transmitter for the keyboard (Sorry could not resist).
That's an idea, thanks....but I hope someone comes up with a cheaper solution
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/apple-iphone-7-dock-is-the-only-way-to-charge-and-listen-to-music-with-normal-headphones-at-the-same-a7231746.html
How much are they? And do they have latency?
The Yamaha BT is like $45 or something.
Could not detect latency when i tried in the store.
Yes...and potentially more than just an annoyance. I've got USB keyboards that plug directly into iPhone and iPads via lightning; no Bluetooth option or any other way to use them and listen through headphones on the iPhone 7. I wasn't looking to upgrade from the 6+ anytime soon, but eventually I figured that I would. Now...well, I don't know. Let's see if they ruin the iPads with this "courageous" innovation, I certainly hope not.
A $45 adapter does not thrill me. It's a lame move from Apple, I know they have done similar stuff before but this one sucks and I hope that sales suffer.
