  • I guess I can buy a dock for the 7 and then have the headphone out there, but again, I'm adding gear. Not ideal when what I have right now works great. And the dock is 50 bucks. So for just shy of a thousand bucks I can upgrade my phone, pick up a dock connector, and a portable table or something to sit it on while I'm out and about, and then I....yeah, I'm not doing that.

Ok, thanks for that. A few problems with it if it was going to replace my jam. For one, the multi port is nice, so I was pleased by that thinking I could plug my mic in as well, but then I read where it doesn't have phantom power, so my condensor is out. I can plug my dynamic mic into it of course, but I can do that with the jam and an XLR to 1/4 cable now, so not really gaining anything (not that I'm going to load my condensor up and take it on a walkabout with me really, but still,..). It's a lot bigger than the jam too, but ok, I can get beyond that. The biggest sticking point for me though, is that it's USB. I don't see any mention of a lightening cable connection there, so now we're still talking about an extra dongle I have to carry around, or at the very least, an extra cable purchase (assuming there is one to purchase out there). The cable for my jam and for my Focusrite look identical, so you'd think they'd be interchangeable, but they're not for whatever reason.

Not slamming your suggestion and I very much appreciate the offer of help. I just don't think this gets me to where I am today with the Jam without more extra "stuff" added into the travel bag (and more cash out of pocket to get right back where I am right now...and the wife and I already have an agreement about my life insurance being up to date in case I spend more money on my *music stuff the rest of the year).

Does the Apogee Jam not have a headphone out? Ouch. I guess I lucked out, because my guitar interface (Line 6 Sonic Port) does have one.

I hadn't thought of that, but that's probably a whole bunch of guitar interfaces that are FUBAR.

Exactly. No headphone out on the jam. And I love my jam. It's so dead simple. And if I get an iPhone 7 it's an incredibly simple paper weight.

Ahh man I have a Jam as well...I guess it's days are numbered...I suppose Apogee will develop a new one with an integrated headphone port.

It's the same thing with any other lightning connected interface that doesn't have a line out. Like iRig HD, iRig Keys etc... The way to go seems the belkin Y splitter plus the Lightning to headphone jack adapter. Not exactly an improvement over previous phones in my book but it is doable.

I just bought an irig hd coming today. but...I won't ever buy an iphone 7. unless it's a few years from now. Hoping the new ipads don't go this route.

  • iPhone 6S Plus it is then.

  • 7 plus gets 3GB ram! Nice to have some good news

    Awesome!!!

  • I thought about upgrading my 5s to a 7 plus but then I also thought for cheaper, I could get komplete 11 for $599 and just keep my iPhone 5s since I don't make much music with it. Or I could upgrade to the full version of Ableton live 9 Suite for $529.

  • @gmslayton

That's a good point there, this new phone is just too expensive for me to justify getting - relative to what I could get in terms of music gear instead.

I currently don't use my phone (6+) for any kind of music making, so I will be exhibiting considerable 'courage' to avoid the 7 for now :)

  • I just thought about it, what I mainly use my iPhone 5s for is field recordings and recording my youtube videos. I could get a Zoom Q8
    https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/video-recording/zoom-q8

and just keep my iPhone. I would just need to talk the wifey into letting me have that option.

as musicians, can we all agree that the airpod/ earpod design is awful? I love some good cans and my silicon earbuds fit great, but I think I've tried jamming those hard plastic earpods into my ear exactly ONE time in my life.

I will never pay to put those in my ear, not sure I would do it if paid.

That device seems aimed at charging and headphones.

Not sure if both lightning ports would be able to carry audio (audio in for interface and audio out for lightning headphones)?

For those seeking Bluetooth headphones, I'd suggest the Bragi "The Headphone" that's just been announced and due to ship in November. They look awesome, especially when compared to the EarPods that literally look like someone cut the cord off of the most uncomfortable headphones known to man and shoved a chip in the end. I am shocked at those things honestly. Yes, I get that they use a proprietary connection that's not Bluetooth, and maybe even some of the apps would be fooled into working with them, but they are the most uncomfortable things I've ever put in my ear. I'll know I'm on my way to hell when I die if I am suddenly finding myself in an elevator with a pair of those shoved awkwardly into my ear holes. "The Headphone" looks very nice, and at 119 I'll probably pick up a pair. Still doesn't really solve any problems for me, but at least I'll be able to have an incredibly tiny piece of electronics to lose.

This headphone suppository in this pic looks WAY better than the actual AirPoids. And far more comfortable when inserted the way that's shown too, I'd imagine.

  • I just upgraded from my old iPhone 5 to a 6S, and I am pleased with the screen size upgrade (such as it is) - not to mention going with the 64G model.

And I don't have to throw my new headphones out.

And all this due to the gradual breakdown over the last month or two (and probably before, hiding in the Otter Box) of the 5 (the screen now a raised platform supported by soldered components) and I could not wait for the 7 to show.

Which may be just as well.

Hopefully I'll be able to hold out for another three years and see how the headphone jack issue works out.

And if anyone can come up with a clever way for me to get Alchemy off the old phone and onto the new one sans connectivity I would be grateful. I ASSUME that iTunes backups will have it, but I dislike iTunes and will probably have the typical UI issue with figuring out how to do it.

You may want to check out the line 6 sonic port, it sounds great and is not that big. I got one on eBay for $30.

Dang that looks kinda nice. I wish I would have looked into that before I bought my irig HD. Hmmm some good prices on ebay for it.

That thing is dead sexy. I can't decide if I'm glad you told me about it or really upset. Was your used one in good condition? I have a thing about buying used stuff. I don't do it typically. But the difference between 30 and 199 might just compel me to make an exception. Is it weird that I get aroused when I see awesome hardware like this? I'm guessing yes. Still, damn that is one sexy interface.

One of the very good things about it is that it has a 1/4" line out in addition to (inferior to lightning port)1/8" headphone out, so integrates perfectly with an amp, DI, PA, etc. You also get full access to the mobile pod app, which I personally don't like but others might and it is free with the interface.

Mine was either new or very close to it, i don't remember. It only came with a lightning cable, so it must have been opened at some point. I didn't need the 30 pin cable though, so it was fine. It's worked perfectly for me. And yes, it does look good too!

Holy cow, I want it. Like now. Screw a new iPhone. I want that interface. Why haven't I heard about this? Does everyone know about this thing? I really really thought I was dying for an Apogee quartet (and I still am, but shhh, let's not dwell). Watched the viddy on Sweetwater about it, and I'm sitting here running the numbers on how many times I *really need to eat over the next few weeks.

I have not purchased this yet, but have for a long time loved the idea of it. Makes perfect sense for a guitarist workflow. 1/4 in and 1/4 out. Simple, but so much possibility in there, massive iOS effects chains, etc.

Wow, do you think an effects loop would work? Is that what you're saying? No way...really? No, that's not possible. Right?

In this brief video below, I am outside of line 6 trying to steal one of these. Line 6 is played by Corbin Dallas.

  • Effects loop? No, but you can definitely run effects before the interface or after it on the way to an amp, DI, etc.
