Song of the Month Club - November 2016

edited November 2016 in Creations

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are fine, but songs with vocals are even better. A bad vocal is better than no vocal, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

It's back to the guitar and organ music for us this month, with added vocals. 'You're smoke and mirrors, you're low grade liquor, you're snake oil'

  • @orchardman this sounds great you guys. thus be enjoyed in every type of sound track. its got a classic vibe to it. i really like how the kick drums mixed in and vocals sit snug in there . nothingz fighting for space . reverb sounds great too.great job you guys...

  • Guitars and star wars :)

  • Vocals are from Zero-G (Time & Space CD) ''Voices from Africa''.

  • My new song, "Bandido". Enjoy the listening, and have a great week!

    Dimitri.

Really like this, rough but catchy vocal and guitar riff.

Like it. Instruments really well produced. The vocal would benefit from some double tracking.

  • @orchardman you and your wife are becoming quite a songwriting partnership. There is a lot I really like in this song: the guitars, the bass so tightly synced to the kick drum, the atmosphere, the drums, and the overall arrangement are all wonderful. The chugging guitars that come in around 2.30 are delicious. Love the solos and the outro as well.

I do think the swampiness is laid on a little thick though, because you don't actually live near the Bayou ;) I only say that because this is so close to being great, but really great writing needs to come from a place of truth, and this is more like whimsy or pastiche. You could keep the music exactly as it is, and with more authentic (to you and your life ) lyrics this would be a killer tune IMO.

You're very lucky to have a songwriting partner in your wife though, what a team you make.

Thanks for the feedback Richard. We always appreciate your considered comments.

With regard to the swampiness, I would make the counter argument that it is the very mundanity of the daily grind that we are trying to escape with these songs. The great thing about the anonymity of internet is that, for a few brief minutes, two middle aged civil servants from south wales can pretend to be anyone they want to be.

And anyway, if you ever go out in Swansea late one Saturday evening you will see a fair few 'creatures from the black lagoon', so you see we aren't that far away from the bayou really :D :D :D

These are two great comments. Point and counterpoint. Both valid, both true.

  • Not been around much recently (working on projects with Doug Woods and others ;) ) but recently bought the Korg Odyssei (used to have a Rev1 ARP Odyssey so enjoying reminiscing with that IAP!)
In this track Odyssei provides the ARP, Patterning the relentless beat and Animoog the synth lead (accompanied by some guitars via Bias FX and Tonebridge and Cubasis Amp Sim.

The funny thing is, that concept would actually be a great basis for a song...

  • My entry for this month. All done in Gadget (as usual), 5 instances of Lexington and 1 of London. Mastered in Auria Pro using Fabfilter C2 and Q2.

  • @orchardman : love it! The kick has a great bottom end and the vocals sound fine to me. Enjoyed it! Swamp or no swamp.

@trackedout : a bit on the rough side, as @RedSkyLullaby said but enjoyable nonetheless.

@marliess : wonderful track. Very professional sounding with great vocal style and lyrics to keep you listening. Reminded me of some retro 80s style. Maybe Fad Gadget for some reason.

@studs1966 : love the ethnic vocal sample, which keep the track interesting

@theconnactic : a nice slice of 80s funk, with some great guitar work. I prefer the parts with the beat though. Not so keen on the bits when the beat stops.

@Igneous1 : another track with a nice bottom end. Nice to hear Lexington being put through it spaces. Well construstruced and mixed/mastered.

  • @orchardman Very nice. Seems like your creative aim is getting dead eye, if I can join the theme. Only things I can think to suggest— maybe a male chorus, even if it's just a low hum at the end of the chorus, to help counter your wife's presence to some degree. I would also like to hear something unexpected brought into the mix, to help make the genre your own. Scrape chains on the floor like a cymbal ride in the dramatic parts— something like that. Nit picking, though.

I also agree on the vocal double tracking, though don't abuse it like I tend to.

  • @trackedout Nice and Weeny. Loorv it. It would be nice if you had a mid song bridge moment to keep my ears in the game, or maybe a solo from a broken Casio. As it is, you do keep it short and sweet. Wish I could still play an instrument when I've been drinking.

  • Having just had a run through of this month's tracks, really blown away by the awesome production skills. Makes me realise I've got a looong way to go but still inspires one to keep chipping away.
@orchardman : cool intro and the guitars really fit the vibe. I was hoping the drums might drive a little bit harder as the song progressed...not a criticism though, great job.
@trackedout : the 'doc doc' riffing was really cool in the vocals, really dragged me in. Cool melancholy vibe and groove.
@studs1966 : this is really different to genres I listen to so I can't add a lot. It was cool how the energy and tempo of the tune ratcheted up when the vocals kicked in....I wouldn't have picked that the vocals weren't laid down for this tune, so great job in marrying them together so well.
@theconnactic : loved the bass intro and funky guitar. Super tight playing and production.
@AlterEgo_UK : cracking first 30 seconds or so as the intro built. Big ominous vibe with the drums, loved the edge the guitars brought from about 2:30. Thanks for the feedback about my tune also :)
@Igneous1 : great groove and really enjoyed the melodies rolling through. Clarity of the sounds popping out the mix was excellent

I leave a track not so developed but with the intention to show the capabilities of the new Korg app Odyssei. Different layers of Korg Odissey as only synth used ( presets from the basic app). Launchpad used for drum and voice loops. The sound is IMHO very 80's even not my style but I like the quality of the synth sound.

Sorry man, sounds more like an early demo than a completed track. Probably needs a chorus and a bridge to break it up a bit as well.

Clever, quirky track. Great lyrics with some excellent playing particularly the bass. Really enjoyed.

Clever idea to combine the African vocal samples with the dance music just not quite sure that it worked.

Interesting mish mash of styles. Not sure about some of the synth sounds or that it really works as a piece but great guitar playing as usual especially the second lead run. You always use some great scales.

Nice atmospheric piece with some great synth and guitars sounds. I not sure it needed it needed the arp running right through it, by the end it was beginning to grate a little. Also it became a little bit one paced, maybe you could have dropped the drums out for a while to break it up a bit. But hey what do I know I'm just stuck here in my swamp :D

Really nicely produced piece but ultimately didn't really go any where for me.

Nice intro with an almost bagpipe sound to it. Some nice synth sounds after that but again it didn't really go anywhere for me.

  • @orchardman To me, this is your Poitin amongst all your other high alcohol content, top shelf slurp songs. The most professionally sung, played and produced song I've heard from you two down there in the Swansea swamps. Visited them myself back in the day, Cloud 9 in Bunnies was particularly wet ;)

The long ringing out strum on the second beat in the bars (sorry) is what adds a dynamic delight to the methodical and effective "hump" beats of the bass drum rhythm. I get a Louisiana, voodoo vibe with hints of herb and plant intoxication and some croc conflicts going on in the background. Deeply felt blues with lovely bendy guitar work. Far too technical for my air guitar worthy, six string squash racquet. Full on dirty sound and skill fully separated in the mix. Feels heavy but nice one because it sounds like you played with honey dripping from your fingers, coating the strings in love then hammering the guts out of em. Deep South.......I hear tinges of an American accent in some words and is really cute folded in with your wife's wonderful voice and Celtic folk mastery. :)
