  • @JohnnyGoodyear I really like that, it's very clever and the lyrics are just awesome. To my shame it almost took me to the end of the song to hear the Nobel reference in the chorus, but I'm not that bright.

    Is that you playing the guitar? And I see you share my love of Soft Drummer. Anyway this is one where all the parts come together nicely: music, vocal, melody, and WORDS. well done.

    @JohnnyGoodyear I don't know if doing a cover month would really work, but maybe I can suggest it for December, as long as it's Christmas songs of course :)

    Shakin Stevens, Merry Christmas Everyone, will be getting a good seeing too...annihilated! If I hear it in the bookies once more as I screw up and floor my latest spent slip.......

    I'm way behind on giving feedback, and also general housekeeping, but at least I've got my entry in. I wish the vocals and lyrics in the last section were better, but it's one of those I may have to revisit at a later date.

    Hi Richard, sorry to hear about your recent problems with your house move and my condolences for the loss of your family pet. It's a tribute to you that you have managed to keep this thread going and contributing in the way you do in the circumstances.

    As for your track, I think it suffers a little bit of an identity crisis. It's starts off as a nice ballad, I particularly like the piano but the vocoder style vocals don't really work for me. Towards the end it has the feel of 'I've got these synths so I am going to use them'. It's pity because I think underneath it all, it had the makings of a pretty decent track.

    @Bluepunk I think you might be onto something here. A song of the month club Bandaid style mashup of the Shakey Classic with everybody contributing a line or two could be a winner. That would fuck up Cowells xfactor world domination attempt for this year.

    Another pastiche from yours truly.
    Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Paul Thompson, and The Bassplayer have gathered together for a Roxy Music rehearsal, but Bryan Ferry has not yet arrived. The assembled gentlemen proceed to do what they do so well. And all is going well. In the last moments, Mr Ferry arrives, flings his jacket aside, leans over his piano, and proceeds to ride out the song with the band.
    I swear it's true!
    Thanks for listening.

    Like it's trippy weirdness :-)

    In honor (or at least nudged by) Mister Dylan's recent literary award. Words in the spoiler. No prizes whatsoever for figuring out how many song references they contain :)

    Really enjoyed that one a lot. A complete song I reckon, and it works really well. Great arrangement and liked the panning of bass and guitar in the breakdown (i hear panning is of considerable importance to some). Yes, you've sold me on that one, very good indeed

    I have got a lot of love for this, beautifully melancholy, I like the vibe a great deal. One of my favourites this month. With respect to the vocal, could there be a little more dry in there. The vocoder effect just seems to be overpowering in a couple of places and almost distort. A bit more dry in there might just give a touch of crispness in places. Just a thought.

    Well @Bluepunk you got your Christmas wish! Here is a track with vocals (two vocal tracks in fact!) :smile:

    A 2016 re-recording of an older song of mine with a punk rock vibe!

    Guitar and bass through Jamup Pro into Cubasis, drums SampleTank. via Audiobus and mastered in Audio Mastering.

    Great stuff! Proper old-style punk rock, uplifting despite the downbeat lyric. Great stuff!

  • Thanks for the comments on my track 'Stout Alexis', nice to hear people liked the production, even if they didn't think the track worked for them.

    Here's my feedback for this month (some of):

    @richardyot
    Firstly, sorry to hear about the loss of your dog and your circumstances. I couldn't get anything done for months after our dog passed away. Back to your track, I like this one, quite melancholic. The vocoded (?) voice, fits well with the instrumentation (I'd like to hear it without distortion, mind), the piano melodics are nice. As are the 'ahhs', I like how the rhodes takes over from the piano. I also like the 'outro bit', it works well, in my view.

    @JohnnyGoodyear
    I have a preference for more minor key stuff, but it flows well in it's major key mode. I hear a kind of 'folksy americana' sound to your stuff and it sounds 'authentic'. I hear improvements in the vocals. The drum intro is a bit odd and the outro is a ta@richardyot

    @crouchie
    Good one (as usual), bit of an odd major / minor clash with the vox and the bass line to these lugs in parts. Well delivered vocals and an interesting percussive element, nicely sparse production. I like the lyrics too.

    @trackedout
    Pretty messy in parts, but I like it nonetheless, there's a cool song there buried there irregardless of the timing issues and somewhat muddy mix. The end is a bit odd, as it just falls off abruptly.

    @orchardman
    On the positive side, the vocal is very nice, with well worded lyrics. Not that keen on the intro sample, but that's a minor point. Otherwise, the track is pretty decent, with some less than flowing drum and bass parts throughout (in terms of timing) and a fairly 'static' chordal progression.

    More to follow...

    Thanks for your comments. I am drifting off to Americana I guess, here's and there, a function of being here in Texas particularly. I would like to work more in minor keys and thus your note nudges me a little in that way. Having said all that I was thinking of doing a rap tune next. Just to stretch the head. Not wholly convinced, but we'll see :) Thanks again...

    Thanks for the positives. Am trying to use SOTMC as a place where however good or bad there's some completing....

    Thanks Mister Richard. I think this effort is a a bit one-paced, but as mentioned am trying to bring a little discipline etc.

  • I am quite late with the feedback! But tonight I'll review everything!

  • @orchardman, very good groove and melodies, and your wife's singing is better than ever. Congrats. That initial sample in the beginning of the song, from where it is?

  • @trackedout: loved the guitar riff and the psychedelic vocals and the general feel of the song. It deserved a proper ending. Nice song!

  • @marliess, I already have a favorable bias to your song because of the Star Wars stuff. The mix is very good, the production in tight and the arrangement really works, Really loved the guitar riff plus vocoder just before the ending,

  • @studs1966, this is the best song I listen from you until now. Everything is quite in place in the mix, and the arrangement is never boring. Nice, where did you get the sampled vocals? Congrats!

  • @AlterEgo_UK, nice tones you got with Odissei! Great melodies as well.

  • @Igneous1: from the start, I really liked the beat and the synth riff. The song doesn't overstay its welcome, something many EDM producers should learn with you. Loved the synth work from 1'10" on.

    Thanks very much. I had a few vocal cds, mainly from Zero G collection. I think......... that it was Zero G, "Vocal XTC?" Luckily I ripped them before loosing the cds, then I moved to a different country, then couldn't find my hard drive, until about a year ago. :D

    Thanks dude! The vocoder effect is the cubasis talkbox....its really versatile with the vowel sounds available. Ive really been enjoying using it and gave it a whirl in my December SOTMC tune too.

  • @AlexB, interesting song that reminds me of pop dance music of early 90's. It would benefit a lot from some singing, perhaps.

  • @raindro, interesting ambient piece. As you understood it, it's a foundation for a song, so I'm looking forward to the finished result.

  • @Bluepunk, nice groove. The drums, in particular, sound great and were mixed very very right. The vocals are also very consistent, so not a single syllable best buried in the heavy instrumental. The song itself is good, the lyrics are funny, and I loved the way it ended.

  • @JeffChasteen: at first, I thought it was simply a messy mashup, because I just listened in the SOTMC playlist. Then I read your post here with the song and got the idea. A funny experiment.

    Thanks! I'm glad that you got it.
    However, it IS still a messy mashup :smile:

    Thanks Dimitri. Things like compression, EQ and Stereo widening are my new mates and I'm enjoying getting to know them. Glad you liked the tune. :) I still use your bass compression tips from a while back.

    @ everyone, I didn't realize this was a covers theme until the end, so please mind that when reading my comments :-)

    @leebee
    I love the electro vibe. You have a good sense of things to come, cause every time I was about to skip the track out of boredom an interesting new element came in. Perhaps that first new element (the arp) could have come in sooner, but the rest was natural as can be!

    @trackedout

    I honestly like this better than the original for the most part. Bravo. Very kewl and newly refreshed.

    @ Derekbuddymeyer
    Brings me back to PG HarVey and I was thinking NIN before I even saw your title. Really lush, alt, and deep. I love it.

    @horsegas
    Great Ska influenced which morphs and ends into a different yet cohesive vibe. It is such an uplifting and happy-go-lucky tune.

    @josebee
    Nice urban dark overtones. Nice use of the noise filter, I like the bass tone

    @studs1966
    Such a contrasting mix, yet there is definitely a bond there. I'm strangely drawn to it.

    @tbtonning
    So down to earth sounding. The whole complete package sounds so very organic. Also on "drive", beautiful voice, a hybrid between Eddie Vedder and Neil Diamond, very confident sounding.

    @syrupcore
    I love your sense of humor. I like your take on the blues and Appalachia and southern influences. Your modern electronic palette choices really are refreshing and I love the vocal harmonies.

    As in Ohpeewon Dimitri?
