@richardyot So sorry to hear all this bad news Richard. Expressing my sympathy and sorrow. Thinking of you.

    Thanks :)

No off to listen to everyone's songs!

Yes, the trouble with the get-it-out-of-the-door-and-move-on-to-the-next-one approach is that every month I post something that is still somehow unfinished. It's like the opposite of perfectionism.

I would like to revisit this one when I have the time, because the riffs are good and it could be a good song. I only like the lyrics in the first verse though, will have to re-write the rest and find a vocal sound that works for the song.

In the meantime my friend Andrew Bird did a spontaneous remix of the track which has got some good ideas and better pacing in it, I might cannibalise both versions:

Nice. Always flattering when others feel the drive to fiddle with our stuff and also often great to get a 'fresh' take.

As for the 'opposite of perfectionism', I agree. I think we should consider nominating a month where SOTMC folks decide to revisit a submission from the past year(s) and commit to remix/re-master/re-invent, hell even re-record it.

Regarding your house hassle, most unusual to get so much trouble with the people you're trying to shove money at. Very annoying. However, news of children doing well/happy at school is (in the long view) far more important. I know, easy for me to pontificate while you're eating another pot noodle from your cardboard box, but keep up the fight etc.

  • Sorry to hear about your situation @richardyot .
At least, in the words of John Miles, you have your music to "see you through" as well as being surrounded by friendly people. It may well turn out to be a change for the better in the long run!

Just going to leave this here. From a discussion in the paper today between two writers. Seemed SOTMC-ey:

PWB Can I ask you, Kate, writer to writer: do you ever write something and go, “Smashed it, that’s brilliant, I’m keeping that, that’s amazing.” Does it get to the point where you can step back and go, “That’s a really good piece of writing” or, “That’s not such a good piece of writing.” Or do you just write it all down and not think of it critically?

KT It’s not like, “Wooh, I’m smashing this” but sometimes everything else disappears, and that happens very rarely. The rest of the time, it’s you writing when you don’t feel like writing, writing when you hate everything that’s coming out, forcing yourself to engage with the idea that it’s going to be shit no matter what you do, and trying to kind of break through that because of a deadline, or because you know that it’s very important to continue. This is what enables you to be a writer.

The difference between a writer and someone who dreams of being a writer is that the writer has finished. You’ve gone through the agony of taking an idea that is perfect – it’s soaring, it comes from this other place – then you’ve had to summon it down and process it through your shit brain. It’s coming out of your shit hands and you’ve ruined it completely. The finished thing is never going to be anywhere near as perfect as the idea, of course, because if it was, why would you ever do anything else? And then you have another idea. And then these finished things are like stepping stones towards being able to find your voice.

The thing is, everybody’s got an idea. Everybody wants to tell me about their ideas. Everybody is very quick to look down on your finished things, because of their great ideas. But until you finish something, I’ve got no time to have that discussion. Because living through that agony is what gives you the humility to understand what writing is about.

    This month's playlist:

Liked this, lyrics in particular, got a Cave-y vibe. Really like when the break beat kicks in, that's a bit different to your usual and it really works well. Like the organ pad, fills the sound out nicely. Only criticism is possibly a couple of timing issues here and there but that could easily be my ear. To be honest this is my favourite one of yours, has a harder edge, less folky and I really like it.

  • @trackedout said:

I've missed a few months lately but this is different from what I'm used to hearing from you. Has the feel of a jam, and sounds good with a loose feel and a catchy hook. The timing is a little elastic in places, but I wonder if that was in fact the intention given the style. Is the right length for this kind of tune. Like it

Song itself is utter genius, love it! Lyrics really impressive and great delivery, arrangement simple but effective. The mix just sounds really flat to me, no punch, trouble is I have no idea what to do to change that, but the song is brilliant. Wouldn't want to be Obi Wan though, he was dull as dishwater.

Vocals are from Zero-G (Time & Space CD) ''Voices from Africa''.

Always love your stuff, didn't take to this quite as much as usual. Trance arps were nice and gave it great texture. Vocal sample worked pretty well. I think I just missed something in the bass area. Would have liked the kick much more prominent. Don't know if it was partly to do with the file compression on SC but the kick seemed to get lost in the bass and it just felt a bit muddy down there. A more distinct driving kick would have helped me, but it's a great tune, really enjoyed it. Cheers

My new song, "Bandido". Enjoy the listening, and have a great week!

    Dimitri.

Wasn't sure about this until the minute mark, then there was the electro weirdness then the fitting together of the different guitar riffs after the minute mark and then I really took to it. Like the crashes later on. I enjoy these slightly more left field excursion of yours much more

Not been around much recently (working on projects with Doug Woods and others ;) ) but recently bought the Korg Odyssei (used to have a Rev1 ARP Odyssey so enjoying reminiscing with that IAP!)
In this track Odyssei provides the ARP, Patterning the relentless beat and Animoog the synth lead (accompanied by some guitars via Bias FX and Tonebridge and Cubasis Amp Sim.

Love that arp and slow filter sweep. Really love it. I'm not really one for crunching guitars, but the track has a really epic feel and is very nicely mixed, gains a real momentum towards the end. Maybe a little drop down might have mixed it up a bit, but great stuff overall!

My entry for this month. All done in Gadget (as usual), 5 instances of Lexington and 1 of London. Mastered in Auria Pro using Fabfilter C2 and Q2.

Lexington sounding very good. Haven't gone for it as I don't use gadget much but you've made it sound great here. Early on its go a great slightly screechy quality that I really like. Not too long as to outstay it's welcome, great tune!

Thanks for the kind creative words. It's sometime a bit & miss when monitoring. Normally use Sony DJ headphones or PC 2 in 1 speakers(then I have listen to when driving the truck to work). Then on some tracks on SC, they sound ok thru Headphones(cannot afford proper monitors...lol)...... But thanks agian, all the same. ;)

  • Just catching up on feedback folks...some great tunes this month...

@RickH – had a nice phat beat to it, could maybe consider mixing up percussion a bit, seemed like the start of a song but liked what I heard

@AlexB – Nice build up, very 80’s indeed as it took me back to start of high school. Voice loops were cool and fitted in mix well…more developed vocals would make it even better, though as you note it was not fully developed. Still kept my interest whole way through.

@Raindro – nice little drone. Was hoping it would kick up a notch with some variation as the song progressed, but heck, it fits the vibe of sleeping on a tramp under the full moon perfectly.

@BluePunk – vocals are awesome on this, super clear, humorous, sarcastic and with equal doses of Tourette’s and bile. Love the way the vocals moved around the stereo field, and the the ‘no I fucking dont’ outro vocal was pure gold. Loved the way the tune chugged away ominously and ebbed and flowed seamlessly with the vocals. Cracking tune – just cranked it for a repeated listen!

@JeffChasteen – cool narrative intro to the tune. I was expecting a vocal when Mr Ferry arrived but alas, I did not ready the narrative intro correctly…indeed, it was the piano he was riding. Your tune did really have a ‘band jamming’ vibe, right down to the mix in that it was bit of a wall of sound (no one instrument jumping out). I know nothing about Roxy Music but really enjoyed the tune and I learnt a new word!

@Crouchie – nice delay intro, followed by the didgeridoo-sounding thing. Vocal chorus on ‘in this hour of fading daylight’ is really cool. Nice airy keyboards around 2:45 too. Really complete and vibe-y tune.

@JohnnyGoodYear – cool drum fade in, made me want to hear what comes next. Beautiful sounding tune, the guitar is a fantastic accompaniment to your voice. I’m listening to these tunes while frigging around with databases at work, and geez, I’m really enjoying everyone’s creativity this morning.

@richardyot – Loved the melancholy vibe for the first 2 and a half mins. Drums, keyboards and voice go beautifully together. I thought the vocals were struggling for space a little from about 2:45 and the mix was a bit congested in the outro. This isn’t a criticism but for mine it reduced the musical /emotional impact of the outro.

@AlterEgo_UK – loved you dipping your toe in the punk rock pond. I think that’s somewhere we should all go at some point (gonna put it on my schedule for early 2017 though not sure how my voice will go…only one way to find out tho  ).

Thanks to @Orchardman, @JohnyGoodYear, @richardyot, @Bluepunk and @Crochie for providing feedback. Crouchie, re my mix being flat, I do all my arrangements on headphones (I get a quick STFU from the lady wife if i try otherwise)...sometimes they work well, sometimes Iess so. I've had a bit of a fixation of getting clarity in my mixes lately, and for this tune I had this notion of a taught, two minute tune (lots of t's  ) going in. Perhaps I overdid it and stripped away too much (I missed the aim of two minutes also). Anyway, next month I'm going disco so hopefully that one will punch like a mofo

I leave a track not so developed but with the intention to show the capabilities of the new Korg app Odyssei. Different layers of Korg Odissey as only synth used ( presets from the basic app). Launchpad used for drum and voice loops. The sound is IMHO very 80's even not my style but I like the quality of the synth sound.

Really like that, so 80s its contemporary. Caught the Launchpad effects and loops in there and they really work well. I can't write stuff as good as that so the synth would be wasted on me, but it sounds brilliant here, great job

Outside in the peaceful dark I reckon I really get that tune. Liked the background pad, and the bass/melody could have even been a bit more subtle for me, but it certainly created a mood. Nicely done.

Wow thanks. I mean It had no real pretensions. It was just building some loops in Loopy with the synth and adding some loops with launchapd. It was like made in 40 min or so but I believe that the real winner here is the synth sounds , I really liked them.

Yep, definitely the best I've heard from your good self. Best lyrics, best delivery, definitely best mix and dynamics in the track - the vocal sits in the song much better. Because of that your personality really comes through in the song, and it appears you are angry, which given the events of the last year or so is only to be expected. Brighton are second, I have simply refused to take any notice of UK/US/world politics (they are doing it for a bet and should be ashamed of themselves) and consequently am serene... loved the song though, brilliant stuff, what sotmc is all about ;-)

Thank you my friend. Been learning about basic EQ and once I dropped clashing frequencies, all sounded cleaner. Just ripped zMorsEQ from the App Store so will practice more with that baby. I share your lack of motivation towards politics but still a long way to go to achieve serenity like your food self. Nice one. Playing tidy football as well, your boys down on the coast. Defo have to meet up at The Falmer next season for a pre match ice cream. Thank you. :)

Thanks a lot. Appreciate your thoughts. No spite or expletives next month....it is December after all. ;)

  • @Bluepunk a couple of things stand out from your submission this month: first of all your production skills have definitely gone up a notch, this one is very well mixed and the vocals are crystal clear and easy to follow. Secondly this one feels a bit less punk, maybe because of the spoken delivery, but I like it like this, it feels more contemporary.

I like the noisy backing too, the bass riff is good and the screeching guitars (or whatever they are) are great, noisy and dissonant but sit perfectly in the tracks. Lyrics are great, and the vocal delivery is terrific.

Thank you so much for your comments. I am chuffed that you and many folk have noticed a tad more clarity this month. I am beginning to understand how to unmess mess by fiddling with EQ, stereo widening etc but I still need a brain cell to remind me that prevention is better, easier than the cure and will save time post recording. Vocally, I'm still trying to discover who I am. The spoken route on this song, was a natural choice for the first time and in that statement, maybe I've answered my own question right there.... natural. Your word "contemporary" I will lodge deep inside. A real bonus.... THANK YOU. :)

  • edited November 2016

Just a passing thought for the group (and the Group Captain of course): How about a 'cover' month at some point? Purely voluntary of course....was thinking about production issues and was also thinking I might find it easier to focus just on 'the sound' if I was working on something that I knew already and wasn't concentrating on new lyrics/tune etc.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I don't know if doing a cover month would really work, but maybe I can suggest it for December, as long as it's Christmas songs of course :)

  • @raindro it's a nice ambient piece but doesn't really go anywhere, essentially it's one musical idea stretched out over two minutes, it would have been better to go on more of a journey under that full moon.

  • @JeffChasteen not really sure about this one, I felt as if the instruments were playing on top of each other a lot of the time, rather than with each other (the saxophone seems to be fighting the guitar for instance), and also the main riff is played relentlessly, it's another track that could do with a few more ideas to keep it interesting. But most of all I felt cheated because I waited and waited, and Bryan Ferry never did start singing. :o

  • @crouchie that's a great vocal-driven track, a very good song. I think you've expressed the bleakness you're feeling articulately and the vocal is convincingly delivered. I think I prefer the verse melody to the chorus, but both are good.

The musical backing is also very good, doesn't overpower the vocal but still has lots of interesting sounds and life to it, and acts as a good counterfoil to the melancholy of the voice.
