In honor (or at least nudged by) Mister Dylan's recent literary award. Words in the spoiler. No prizes whatsoever for figuring out how many song references they contain :)

There are no bells for the poet
    down in the hurricane
    no visions of Johanna
she will never be the same
he's given up on old New York
    on the tambourine man too
with one more cup of coffee
you'll feel the same way too

    It’s 3 o’clock in the morning
    the only sound you hear
is the manager of night now
    he's crying out in fear
    he finds himself in darkness
in the there that is not here
he thought he’d own the future
but the cost became too clear

There are no bells for the poet
    that ring in Mozambique
    sixty years of writing
all gone in a three day week
Mister Dylan is the poster child
of all that's said and done
be sure that when you're long since dead
the lady will be laying on (and on and on...)...

    On Positively 4th Street
    way down Watchtower Lane
    we're talking of our differences
yet still sound just the same
    all tangled up in color
    blown on an idiot wind
    we're forever young yet aging
    all masters of our sin

    Saying it aint me babe
as the times keep changing here
    it's nothing like alright Ma
we're getting thinner by the year
we think that we'll be released
with God here on our side
but these boots of Spanish leather
leave us no place left to hide when

There are no bells for the poet
There are no bells for the poet
There are no bells for the poet
There are no bells for the poet

This is a very good tribute, JG.
Your vocals are a real standout on this. Very nicely done.
I caught a lot of the song titles. I had a chemistry teacher in high school who always had Bob Dylan bonus questions on his weekly tests. They were usually the only things that I got correct. Ha!

  • @crouchie I enjoyed that immensely!
80s retro sound and the vocals reminded me of a softer Midge Ure. Great lyrics too.
For some reason I also picked up an African vibe and could imagine Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing harmonies

  • @JeffChasteen : nice recreation of a Roxy rehearsal jam! Some instantly recognisable Roxy sounds in there although not sure how you achieved them in iOS (unless I missed it in your post?)

@JohnnyGoodyear : Yep, insightful lyrics as usual, delivered in suitably appropriate style. Enjoyed it!
Loved the drum track and was it a real acoustic guitar or not? I couldn't make my mind up!

Excellent, @Bluepunk A right riveting read and a great example of your wordsmitthery. Words, (however) don't come easy to me...so I admire your talent!

Thank you. Nor me. They are (the words) returning gradually after years in the haze but I intend and am trying to improve my extremely limited vocabulary daily. I can't sing Sir Colin (as you've heard) but I love trying to. Another strike off the bucket list. Please, please, sod the words, the quality, just smash a line out, I dunno, "I am, did you hear me, I am a brilliant guitarist" That'll do. I look forward to hearing your voice above your class instrument work. :)

Was collecting some coche (ish) merchandise from the docks a couple of months ago but unfortunately I ran into Maud over at Customs on my way out. Badly timed on my part because I thought she listened to "HM Revenue & Customs Weekly" on "Radio Bore the Shit out of me FM" at 2pm every Friday. Relax Maudy, I ain't no Howard Marks love. Began writing this song using the telling off I received as bait and then went a little further into a rant about stuff. Room 101 Part 1a.

great track man. Love the energy and the anger but you managed to keep it just about restrained with a brilliant production job. Definitely your best so far.

    Another pastiche from yours truly.
Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Paul Thompson, and The Bassplayer have gathered together for a Roxy Music rehearsal, but Bryan Ferry has not yet arrived. The assembled gentlemen proceed to do what they do so well. And all is going well. In the last moments, Mr Ferry arrives, flings his jacket aside, leans over his piano, and proceeds to ride out the song with the band.
    I swear it's true!
    Thanks for listening.

Nice intro, but as the piece developed it got a bit 'wall of noise ' for me with all the instrumentation panned down the middle. I couldn't really make out the various parts above the heavy main riff.

Hello again, have missed being part of things. Finally got time to put something out. Happy with the vocal this time. You can hear my youngest in the middle eight complaining that he can't hear what I'm listening to. He snuck up on my whilst i was recording in the bedroom. Left it in cos it made me smile. Comments gratefully received as always. Cheers. P

Brilliant job man. You have posted some strong songs on this forum before but I have not always been keen on your arrangements or choice of instrumentation but this one really works. Great great song, with a fine vocal and really well produced. Song of the month so far for me and that is saying something given @Bluepunk's entry.

Thank you, thank you. Energy and anger I will happily take as good at my age. Maybe there's some mileage in that. Could come up with a new genre for non musician types and call it......punk. Nah, it wouldn't work.

Without wishing to single anyone out, I feel the issue of 'timing' should be mentioned. I hear some things that (to these ears) sound out of time. I know the flip-side of that is 'feel', but there's a point where things become noticeable.

I'm wondering if people are playing / singing to the best of their abilities and letting any timing issues go, as they don't feel it's that important, or are they somewhat unaware of such issues ?

As I said, I'm not getting at anyone, here, just making a point which I feel should be raised in the spirit of constructive criticism.

Personally I think if you hear something played out of time in a specific track, just say so in the specific crit.

As someone who has often suffered from sloppy timing I know for a fact that you don't always hear it in your own work, so having it pointed out is always helpful.

Timing improves with practice, I can heat that clearly in my own submissions, they were riddled with loose timing a year or two ago, but are gradually getting much tighter. Far from perfect yet though, like everything else :)

  • I'm way behind on giving feedback, and also general housekeeping, but at least I've got my entry in. I wish the vocals and lyrics in the last section were better, but it's one of those I may have to revisit at a later date.

  • @Igneous1 this one seems less jazzy than some of your past entries, closer to pure electronica (very Orbital-like in places, particularly the riff at the one-minute mark), which I think I prefer.

A lot going on as usual, I think I would sometimes like to hear a bit more space in your tracks, a little less busy-ness at times.

One thing that stood out to me is that all the sounds are warm and lush, maybe not surprising for Lexington, but I never knew London could sound that good. Top-notch production.

  • @AlexB Nice track, has a real soaring quality in the first half, initially I wasn't sure about the second lead line, but it grew on me. I thought the track could be developed a bit more though, because it seems to run out of ideas once the theme is set - lots of potential though, it has the hooks.

  • Well @Bluepunk you got your Christmas wish! Here is a track with vocals (two vocal tracks in fact!)

A 2016 re-recording of an older song of mine with a punk rock vibe!

Guitar and bass through Jamup Pro into Cubasis, drums SampleTank. via Audiobus and mastered in Audio Mastering.

  • @richardyot : this could be a great song but two things spoil it a bit for me.
    1) There is too much distortion on the vocals in the first section for my taste.
    2) The vocals are a hidden behind that rather juicy synth bass sound in the second section.
Love that synth sound though!

Sent me right back to any number of noisy Saturday night gigs in Hammersmith and beyond....turned it up loud but really wanted it even louder. I think the vocals are good but if anything too restrained, not enough gob maybe, would benefit from yet more snarling :) I admire the structure, you cover all the bases that I often wish I could as easily manage.

Like the vibe off this a lot. I really do. Every tune has an essence, a personality beyond the chords or particular structure, and I really like the feel here. Loses a little mojo just before the synth comes in at 2.30, but comes back thereafter, but I'm not convinced about the relative mix of the different sounds coming home. The atmosphere overall is well nailed, but it does feel like a game of two halves (Brian).

I hate to simply repeat your own analysis back at you , but I'm guessing this is one that you'll more clearly recognize the soul of in six months and -hopefully- take another go at. There's the root of something above average here, something soulful, but as has been indicated I think you will want to figure out what to do with the vocal sound. It's simply not as good as the song. I'm not talking about the singing; just the production. Don't let this one disappear in the back of the drawer.

  • Yes, the trouble with the get-it-out-of-the-door-and-move-on-to-the-next-one approach is that every month I post something that is still somehow unfinished. It's like the opposite of perfectionism.

I would like to revisit this one when I have the time, because the riffs are good and it could be a good song. I only like the lyrics in the first verse though, will have to re-write the rest and find a vocal sound that works for the song.

In the meantime my friend Andrew Bird did a spontaneous remix of the track which has got some good ideas and better pacing in it, I might cannibalise both versions:

Yee fooking ha! Great stuff. Before the music.....the pic? C'mon then, is that you? Nice tights ;) What's on the foil covered plates? Details. Takes me back to the Essex scene. I didn't like the name Pub rock, but understood why it was named that. Made sense. Eddie and the Hot Rods, Dr Feelgood and a hint of Kursaal Flyers. All kick in the groin, high octane Rock 'n' Roll. Not about the fashion, rather the attitude. That matters and Colin, IMO, I'd take these faster, 2/3 minute songs over your skilfully played instrumentals. It's that thing they make me feel.......emotions. Excellent, energetic song and because of that, today, I feel 40 years younger. Thank you. :)

Ps. Can't say too much cos the gaffer may be listening and the flaunting of the rules. :)

Yes @Bluepunk it is me an my missus in the photo. She is the one wearing the tights!
Under the foil on the plates was a buffet fit for a king at our local church hall!
Got to be honest it was a fancy dress party but we did have the attitude and it was great fun!

Thanks. Love the pic. It smells of that era and I can feel it. Really enjoyed this and sorry, I didn't mention your singing. I don't know if you sing on your other stuff but purely on this effort, if you don't.......why? Very good lyrics and delivery. Perfect for your song. Of course from this moment on, you are a confirmed member of the warblers side of this club and we look forward to future "sung" songs. Welcome and fully deserved. :)

  • Cheers @Bluepunk Yes, I do sing on some of my tracks and more recently been letting rip with a rockier vibe as on my cover of Muse's HYSTERIA in the Creations section of this very forum and on my album In Rock We Trust. Generally I am very quietly spoken and although the vocals on some of my tracks reflect this people are often surprised when I come out with a rock voice! I play a wide range range of styles of music and vocals suits some better than others

Thank you. I will go check some out. Who needs the radio when we have our own station right here in the Audiobus hot tub. Must say those drums from Sample Tank sound good as well.

  • @richardyot Hope all sorted on the home front now, or like last month Mr Bear, did you have to record this outside of your plush, warm studio? I've had fleeting visions of you roaming the Kent countryside, on the look out for a dead cow. Scraping its intestines out with your hands, tucking yourself deep inside it's still warm carcass and blasting this one out to get a hollow sound type effect.

I've heard a dozen or so of your songs and each one, to me, has a theme. I feel sad and sorry for the geezer/bird you are singing about. That's talent Richard. A million Welsh cwtches to them. The intro could've been your December song because it sounds Christmassy. Please, anyone out there, tell me I'm not the only one to get an E17 "Stay another day" vibe? The darkness you introduce at 2.25 is great, especially the riff and timing of those "duh, duh, duh, duh, daaaaaah's." Song on its own there.

Where was Andrew (Ray Mears) to get a remix down do quickly? In the Friesian's empty shell opposite yours? Hearing those drums loud and clear. Man, they're stunning. The vox at 1.17 sound "Cathedral monk" style and a good shout. And that drop in chords (don't know the technical name) at 1.36 to 1.40 made my one remaining hair stand up and dance euphorically. You HAVE to revisit these two versions, mix, blend and shove back out here to be appreciated again. :)

Loving this version (was that remix done in iOS?) but it would be interesting to hear a combination of the two

  • @Bluepunk I'm still living in the wilds of Kent surviving with only my wits and a Swiss Army knife. I don't agree with being cruel to cows BTW. Last count was we had two house sales fall through because the vendors pulled out on us, and we are slowly frittering all our equity away on holiday homes. The studio is still in boxes in Access Storage, Sutton.

I'm getting used to it all, but it's been a very rough few months, and to cap it off our 13 year old dog, who was truly lovely, died of kidney failure last month. The one thing going well is that the kids are happy, the schools around here are way better than South London, and the people in general are very friendly, much friendlier than London.

Andrew just saw the track pop up on SoundCloud, and sent me the remix a few hours later.

@AlterEgo_UK the remix is on PC, my friend is not an iOS musician, just the regular kind.

  • @richardyot So sorry to hear all this bad news Richard. Expressing my sympathy and sorrow. Thinking of you.
