I agree with you here in theory but not in practise.. iOS is not desktop and does not abide by its 'everything in one program' mentality nor the 'everything in one machine' format that we took for granted.
It's a modular environment from both a software and hardware perspective. By far the most effective and cheapest way to add higher processing power and enhanced user interface to an iPad rig is to add another iPad and have them working together, which goes hand in hand with a software environment centred around ease of using many different programs all connected together and working as one.
This is just my viewpoint and commentary of course, philosophising on your comment on running multiple apps together being a work around. Through a different lens it's the primarily intended use case.
A very good point...
Nice to know it's on the to do list....I doubt we'll see it anytime soon though
IOS 12. Lol.
Is there actually a size limit?
I know Apple have suggested sizes, which I imagine are for Garageband compatibility, but at the end of the day it's just another UIView... What's stopping a developer from going fullscreen?
I wouldn't be happy with this, as it would introduce size fragmentation between hosts. It would mean adjusting the GUI behavior of the plugin depending on which host it's running in. Making a good wellbehaving GUI is already painful and hard work as it is (especially on iPhone with its different screen aspect ratios).
Making a GUI fully scalable and adaptable only works in theory and is only really workable for some generic types of apps which have scalable content. For complex GUIs (such as synth type stuff) it typically results in an ugly one-size-fits-none GUI, as you can see on Android.
I would only like this if it the options are well-defined: switchable between minimal-letterbox format and fullscreen-format. As long as it offers a predictable canvas to design for.
I completely agree. I think letterbox + fullscreen would be a fantastic compromise.
This is nice to know
Will be especially useful once IL can host AUv3
All-in-one allows me to get things done. Gadget, Caustic and now FLMS are the first places I would go to actually create a song. Too much time wasted on trying to make a bunch of standalone's work together.
Standalone's are good for making loops and other material that ultimately ends up in an all-in-one for me. But as far as actually making music with them - it's way too painful and time consuming and doesn't end up working half the time.
Also, I love the sequencer in Troublemaker and would like to see it as a separate app that hosts AU's. Maybe something like a combination of AUM and MIDIsteps with the Bram Bos touch?

yup, i crave the moment that cubasis or auria sets up good internal sequencing, or at least easy to use piano rolls like gadget. i get all excited with connecting other apps but am always unsure and things that have worked before suddenly don't (like last night i couldn't get patterning synced to auria or cubasis).
what i plan to try tonight is to link gadget(for drum sequencing) and troublemaker, export midi of both into auria and then go from there.
@brambos is it possible to create "silent" au sequencers that feed into another midi channel?
anybody have any luck configuring the korg nanokey studio to troublemaker? i see brambos' midi implementation and will connect the korg to the computer tonight, finally. since i have had it i use it mainly for gadget and it seems to work automatically with a bunch of other synths so i have never really configured it.
I just think that some sound designers can still innovate and provide inspiration by providing certain presets with a particular ARP pattern
No, unfortunately not. But apparently this is on Apple's agenda.
Out of curiosity, does the Nanokey offer multiple templates/presets that can be switched without connecting to a computer? I'm currently using an Akai LPD-8 but the wirelessness of the Nanokey Studio seems nice.
It has eight user configurable 'scenes'. You'll need a computer to set them up, but then everything can be done via the controller.
I have the Korg nanoKEY Studio. Mainly got it for Gadget.
It does allow you to create 'scenes' (Scales, CC's etc.) using the editor software.
There is no way to change the midi-channel on the fly (other than change the scene) and this is a real bummer.
The keys feel like 'bigger' old-school computer keyboard keys and that fits me perfectly
To each their own workflow. I use Audiobus and AUMs preset system to boot up the exact same setup each time, which I developed over 6months of tweaking! Now for me, it loads in the same way that you load up a standalone app and gives me infinite scope for expansion/experimentation. It's geared towards lifve performance and I can record full pieces with it using modstep with AUMs recording functionality to capture live instruments. This is how I see the OS personally, although hopefully as it matures more and more it'll contain options available for everyone's desired workflow.
I've been pretty busy recently but when I pick up troublemaker I'm hoping to use it a lot on the go on iPhone, in combination without Aleph Looper. I'll be able to slot it into my live setup later.
How is Troublemaker when played using a MIDI controller? I'm quite excited to learn how versatile it can be as an instrument in its own right. I'm hoping it can dislodge Viking synth from my setup! (I do love Viking but something fresh is always exciting, and maybe trouble maker will also take less processor power.. maybe).
This would very much be my take on it too. One of the more joyful parts of iOS music making is seeing how developers> @Samu said:
Out of curiosity - can some scenes be native and others non-native mode? Or is it possible to switch off native mode from the controller?
*Feel free to delete/ignore if this is getting off-topic..
good points about the presets in aum and audibus. have to sit down and figure that out well.
trouble maker sounds very good as a "free-running" synth, i was jamming a bit with it last night and it's great for melodies .
thanks, yeah i figured it could be done. will be setting up a few templates tonight.
the keys are great, the shallow responsive feel is perfect for some types of playing, for example when i use a standup bass sound in gadget, i can reproduce the slides and "hammer-ons" better.
I knew you could set up "scenes" (haven't tried it yet) but how do you switch between different "scenes"?
I'm guessing the scenes would be custom setups for specific apps, ie. one scene for TroubleMaker, another scene for iDensity, another scene for Soundscaper?
@skiphunt I believe you press the scene button and then one of the 8 pads
It's not always necessary to do this but I find that with more complex setups, if you save and clear in AUM before saving in Audiobus, then when loading load AUM first but wait until all other Audiobus apps are booted before loading the preset in AUM, it will load more stably.
Also worth considering carefully which apps to host in Audiobus and which in AUM as IAA/AU. Things I control via MIDI and don't need to view the interface of such as Sector and Turnado, I host as IAA. Saves setup time and screen real estate on Audiobus Remote.
I've had a couple of fabulous jams with Troublemaker today, brilliant app, I'll use this one a lot.
What is making it so usable and rewarding for you ?
This is one thing that always seems really cumbersome to me. I still consider myself a beginner, nothing more than a hobbyist really, but I've learned a lot in the 3+ years I've been messing around with this stuff. But with most of the combination of apps I experiment with when live jamming key changes in one app do not change the key in the other apps. So, as you said, the other parts remain static. To get every part to reflect the right key changes at the right times I have to do all this cumbersome editing in something like Cubasis afterwards. I'm sure I'm missing something in some cases, probably something that has to do with MIDI, but some of that stuff isn't the easiest thing to figure out or understand sometimes.
And I agree about Figure. I absolutely love the app, it's interface, and the sounds it can produce but it seems to live on an island by itself when it comes to key changes. You're either just changing the key in that, where everything else stays static, or you're changing the key in another linked app or whatever, but Figure remain static. That's kind of annoying unless I'm missing something?
Troublemaker looks awesome though so I will be getting it as well later today. Just the fun factor alone looks like it makes it worth it.
This has always been tricky, there is no standard for telling an app or device what key to play in....you can tell it by MIDI which root note, but not which scale type.
yep. the app is an invitation to jam.
@brambos
feature request: I would love to start a new session where I left off. an option to remember the last session would be great. Or even better, like in AUM, load an empty session but quietly ask if the last session should be restored.
Okay well that clears it up a little for me. So I guess I wasn't entirely missing the boat here. Hopefully someday this problem can be solved somehow. Thanks for the information.
@brambos Feature request. When activating a note or tapping it to accent it i almost always slide the note up or down. Which i then have to slide back. A button that locks the notes would be great. Then i can quickly tap note on or accent with less hyper precision. Like the cubasis piano roll locks.
