MOAR questions for a giving soul...
Can you define, save and import (into a new project) named MIDI Programs? So that, for instance, I could set up an external synth program with its name, port and channel already saved? Next time I want to use it, I just load that program and it's ready to go?
Related: is it possible to rename the CC controls in a MIDI program and save that with a MIDI Program? Says something about using the computer to do this in the manual. For example, could you create a 'Volca Keys' MIDI Program and rename CC72 to 'Filter Cutoff'? And then save/recall it?
Swear I'm looking in the manual before asking these questions!
The software manual doesn't give any additional info on MIDI programs.

Nope. No clue. If I wanted to tangle with connecting & controlling multiple midi stuff, I'd just have stuck w/ the computer.
I bought the Live so I could focus on internal sample-based music; specifically hip hop. I want to work with one piece of hardware that I can master.
I'm starting to lose track of all of the potential good madness I could get up with the mpc L, now I'm thinking it was a good thing I didn't cancel my order and go for the digitakt first. what does bother me though is that even though I'm primarily interested in it for the same reasons you are (ice pulse), I wish they had added the Digital spdif and at least another pair of midi in/out... those are sore spots cause my methodology when writing is to turn everything I touch into a sample, if I don't get a midi merger box from midi solutions I won't be able to hook up all the external gear to it that I know I'll want to when at the crib, I'm almost thinking just keep running everything off the 2500 like I'm doing now but if I end up really loving the mpc live then I'll want to get it in the mix eventually.... and no digital I/o C'mon akai wtf , I've been running the digital out of the mpcs into digital ins of fx boxes and mixers for a long time and it's very important, can't believe they left that out I bet if they make another model they'll include it
Thanks.
Would have been cool if users could swap out the Phono input with SPDIF and/or an mono XLR/instrument combo jack input as a plug and play upgrade module. I like that they included the phono input but mostly for nostalgic reasons. I probably wont have much of a use for it personally. XLR/instrument level input would be handier for me.
me too, as my turntables are connected to a Mackie mixer, they could have made one of the USB ports multipurpose or something I dunno maybe they will update some things in a firmware, think there might be some trouble down the road for akai on how to make more money off of this, not sure how far ahead they've planned but they keep saying yes to great ideas and not mentioning anything about paid updates, but the typical mpc users already has more right now than they've ever cared about (minus some of those legacy features they took out) and dan said that even some of those are coming back
Definitely curious about the MPC Live. Can any of u owners try out the looper function and let me know how ya like it?
Of course, with USB host support, the sky's the limit with regard to IO. Just up to them to implement support for it.
A cheap 2x2 midi class compliant port should work, mate. Anyone can try to confirm it?
I remembder when I had the MPC Ren & Studio they had this Direct record option. I wonder if that's available in the Live. here's what it did:
Arm the samlper and play your beat. Then record some guitar chords.
It automatically created new samples for each chord (threshold detection) and it placed them as triggers in the timeline automatically. That was a very underrated and awesome feature!
I've seen nothing to indicate such a feature, but I see no reason why Akai would remove such a thing from the MPC Software.
The feature is there, kind of hidden. Used it a lot. And I also confirmed with Pete (their dev) on twitter that it's presnt in the Live. WOOT!
Now if only someone would be kind enough to share the .DMG install file of the beta....
)
Care to expand on the method?
I saw that. LOL... I mean, how do you arrive at that setting?
I think he's talking about this, that's pretty dope if the mpcL has it.
BM3 can do synced recording to pads like this but currently it doesn't add note-events in the sequencer...
...but there's nothing saying that this won't change in the future
niceee, eh Samu those days of us staying up all night begging retronyms for crumbs are over huh hahaha
Healthy competition is always good so we can only hope they'll step up the ante
I mean technically the MPC2.0 software could most likely run quite well on an iPad or something if it got 'ported'.
I feel the same way. No more begging Retronyms for features.
I'm starting to think that akai didn't want the impc to make any confusion for the mpc live, cause they've been working on the MpcL for 3 years which would overlap with the human sacrificing we indulged in over the impc. They might just port it over but I imagine it would be quite some time later since the mpcl is just rolling out
spartaaaaaa
Yeah, but non the less the MPC Live is indeed quite a cool piece of gear. I've not seen one in person yet but when they do hit the stores here I plan to go and give it a spin or 'beating'
As for me personally I feel that my search for a 'sampler & synth' is over when BM3 finally gets released.
Some requested features may come in later updates but it feels really good to have been able to ventilate old and new ideas and knowing that the app will be improving in all aspects over time. And it really does feel like 'Hardware'.
And well, the MPC Live has something the iPad will never have, proper class-compliant USB-Ports, Plenty of I/O and you can shove in a 1TB SSD if needed.
I do wonder if the USB-Ports on the MPC-Live can be used to hook up the iPad using CCK for some '100% Digital Sampling' of the iPad Apps... (This can be done with the Korg Kronos).
Even better would be to skip the CCK and use the Lightning->USB cable to hook the iPad to the MPC Live and charge it at the same... (This could probably be done via a firmware update if it's not present yet).
Time will tell where this all leads
Atm these usb are only class compliant midi host.
one thing for sure it looks like the iPad and mpcL will make a great combo, even though it's a hybrid stand alone unit/ desktop software controller I'm not even planning on using it with my desktop computer, but I'll be feeding it iPad/iphone apps all day long
What is this synth of which you speak? I haven't noticed one in any of the screenshots.
I'm mostly referring to using samples as oscillators for the synthesis, run them thru filters and effects, map and layer them across the keyboard, 'abuse the stretch engine' add effects per layer and with some creative tweaking you could put a simple single-cycle saw wave on two layers, add a phase-inverter as layer-effect on one of them and add slight detune and voila you've got pseudo PWM and mocking around with the gain or saturator on each layers you get plenty of variation and just about every parameter can be modulated with variety of options. With creative use of LFOs and Step Modulators you could do crossfades between samples, chip-arps, tuning audio while retaining speed etc etc.
With the BM3 sampler-engine being sample-accurate between layers who knows, maybe we'll some day even be able to 'wave-shape' one layer with the output from another layer or do some other 'math' between them
The LFO's run at op-to 200Hz so that as well adds some sound-shaping capabilities...
(And if you need you can scale the rate based on the note you trigger by adding midi-note as a modulation source to the rate).
So ya, when you start digging deeper into it it will go quite deep if needed...
