Thanks for the response. Awesome!
I don't think you can send midi out and I don't think that would make sense either. It's a synth purely and there's no sequencer and the keyboard is nice and functional but nothing you would just die to use to control other synths. Why do people want synths with midi out when they have no sequencers or even clever arpeggiators?
because they have other sequencers that they want to use with the synth, but they want to use the synths interface to control it, (not control the synth with an external sequencer) only sequence the synth with the external sequencer.... not only does it make perfect sense but it's super common
Watched the dev's demo video again. I'm confused...
Let me see if I've got this straight. A "performance" is a collection of "instruments". Each instrument is a collection of "layers"? Or, are the separate instruments the actual layers?
Do the individual instruments, made up of layers/synths/arpegiators... etc. interact with each other, or can their mix levels respective of each other within the instrument, and/or performance... by mixed within the performance?
What is a preset then? Is that a performance collection?
If each "layer" that makes up an "instrument" is a separate synth, why are their separate midi controls for each layer?
Are "layers" and "synths" with regard to LayR, essentially the same thing?
And when you build up a "Performance" I'm assuming that with the stroke of a key, you're triggering a collection of Instruments that are built up of layers or synths... do they all trigger at once? Or, can you stagger them somewhat?
Would an arpeggiator make up a separate layer that's in turn triggering another synth within it? Or, is the arp targeted at another layer/synth within the Instrument? Or, can one arp layer be made to trigger multiple instruments?
Like I said, kinda confused, but looks interesting for sure.
ps. Can you export the presets and save them externally somewhere like dropbox?
@kobamoto is this a hardware thing? Because it smells like a hardware thing. Do you find this functionality often in other apps?
not enough in other apps, there is often halfway doing it.... but this is the standard way synths and midi works, it shouldn't matter whether it's hardware or not should it.... it's just synths and sequencers we are talking about so the standard modus operandi would be synth midi out to sequencer midi in and sequencer midi out to synth midi in and thats it, press record on your sequencer and play with the synth recording everything into the sequencer.
Thanks for clarifying![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
In a scenario with two instrument tracks (midi channels 1 and 2) where I'd play keyboard on ch.1 and a sequencing app on ch.2, and additionally sending cc's from another source/channel. To receive the cc's on all tracks, with midi set to omni/all, it would rule out the separately sent notes. Maybe the group options could offer a remedy, I still have to explore the details ...
@db909 the 8 track arpeggiator/16 step sequencer would lend itself perfectly for midi out, imho, and already is in the to-do's, @Paulyboy
@kobamoto thanks for explaining that makes perfect sense now that I think about it. Would be nice to be able to do that with every synth/sequencer combo
Is it an intro price, please?
yeah apps can make the iPad the best soundmodule with just this little thing of having midi go both ways.
I don't think he did a launch sale unfortunately, but from the reports so far, and the very few snippet samples, it sounds like $20 is likely a very fair price for this app. I'm on the fence, but the possible, rich complexity is sounding potentially very juicy so far.
My estimate is that (within the context of the current iOS pricing structure) it's at the right price point. If it's something you have an interest in, then I feel pretty sure you'll feel you've got a bargain. As always, if not, not. As already rambled about, what I'm impressed with is the depth on offer but it's still something that a fool (self) can get into from the getgo. There are plenty of other apps out there (epsecially modulars,) that are no doubt worth the money, but cause my limited head to freeze up with just the looking and thus.....not worth it to me![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
From the dev...
So what is LayR?
Essentially, boiled down to it’s simplest components, LayR is a model of up to 256 analog synthesiser voices all capable of playing different sounds simultaneously. Through it’s simple user interface the user can layer those voices across a keyboard in many different ways, ranging from hundreds of simultaneous monophonic synths, to four full layers of 64 voice polyphony or any other combination. In reality, most people’s playing technique means it’s possible to create many layers of texture and not run into voice stealing issues.
LayR is also multi-timbral, which means you can assign voices to different MIDI channels and even different stereo outputs to it’s host app.
Almost every parameter in each voice can be assigned a MIDI controller, with a range over which the controller affects the parameter, in either direction, from low to high or high to low. This means a single controller can be used to morph values in different layers.
That's encouraging. I don't mind the apps that make me work for it and actually do tutorials and read the manual... but if I'm not using it all the time, the fresh knowledge drifts away somehow. (Too much peyote I reckon)![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
So, intuitive well thought out design is certainly a golden characteristic for sure. I might wait for the first wave of complaints after the usual 3 days of new app purchase hype starts to dissipate. Or, at least until the first reports of the originally intended final build hits.
I've watched the demo video 3 times now, and not sure that it's given me enough info to hit the ground running. Are you saying that once you're actually using the dang thing, it all falls into place and is very intuitive to figure out?
Might be all the different naming conventions that have me a little confused. Will watch the video again later. I didn't get much sleep. Fell for all the wikileaks Vault7 conspiracy CIA stuff for the last couple of nights and lost track of time on reddit. Not thinking clearly at the moment, and I never made it to Starbucks.
Hey, maybe the CIA or the Russians are screwing around with my browser and that's why I can't load the Living Memory site?! LOL I did download the first torrent but chickened out at the last minute.
Given the number of layers and controls in LayR, it seems it would be a good candidate to have the option to use OSC to control the app to overcome the inherent limitations of the MIDI standard to address such a large number of independent controls simultaneously. Perhaps at some point there could even be LayR bands where several individuals collectively play an instance of LayR?
The price depends entirely on how you perceive the app. For me, $20 is what I'll pay for a tool I need and can see using frequently. Modstep, Cubasis, Animoog, Auria.
I'll take a chance on virtually any app that sounds cool for less than $10. I'll go up to $14.99 if I'm on the fence but it has AB/Link/IAA and people rave about it. Or if wine has been consumed.
That's just my completely made up criteria. So from my perspective, if Layr were $12.99 and was going up to $19.99 in a week? I'd buy it without hesitation. And then I'd chime in and get everybody else on board. And then those who arrive later and are deciding between this and Nave and Magellan, then Layr would probably rise to the top.
Of course, if all the spendthrift early adopters tell me how this is a new paradigm in synth apps and I have to get it, then I will.
But this quandary has made me delve into Magellan, which I picked up on sale, and which is just a beast. Anybody have a great tutorial to recommend?![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
So, I managed to get my gear together and create a brief little video on what layers actually are, within LayR. I'll create more videos, especially if you suggest what I should cover.
Well done that man.
I'm guessing the trick (for some) will be to see what it can make beyond the washy/ethereal realm. The thing I am already really excited about with this is the preset sharing (and the different imaginations/styles exposed therein).
I read a user post on discchord the sounded like you can load multiple instances of LayR in AUM. I reread the dev's app description and if I am understanding this correctly, you can load up to 8 LayR instruments and a separate output into individual AUM channels. And each of these instruments can be comprised of up to layers that are actually synths until a pool of 128/256 voices is exhausted (iPad/Pro). Is this correct?
So, let's say you've set up a performance that's 8 instruments with dozens of layers/synths configured for each. Let's say one of the instrument layers is an arp sequence.
Now, let's say this whole complex performance of 8 instruments, complete with configured morphing with modulation between 2 phase states, etc. is loaded into AUM on 8 separate channels, all controlled by the keyboard in AUM. Let's say you hit just one key or chord. What happens? They all play in sync at once? Can be staggered? How does the arp behave in this scenario?
FYI: @LivingMemorySoftware I'm at a Starbucks on a different internet provider and your site is loading fine on my iPad. This issue I was having must be related to my provider. But, it's weird it's only effecting your site.
Bravo! More of anything like that is a sure bet! What an excellent video. The video expressed in film what I tried to with words but much better. Wow I was impressed.
So is the app working?
There is some warning on the page?
AWesome!!!!!
Waiting for the new code or version release which is imminent. It works now but with lots of little niggles but is functional and sounds amazing. Just went to look a moment ago as this kind of thing usually gets expedited. Not just yet but I am going to go play the old build now and make some new performances.
Great! That's a big help understanding. Thanks!
If you're taking suggestions or requests for other videos, it'd be cool to see a walk through of just building a simple 2-instrument performance that's not made from presets.
And, one that walks through the arp would be awesome too.
Excellent job! I mY have to take a chance on this one. Might wait until the intended build makes it through and verify no issues first.
Do you have AUM? If so, can you confirm if you can load each instrument from a complex performance as separate channels? Then play all at once as you are in this video?
Thanks guys. Yeah, I have moved things around so hadn't sorted all my gear together in a while, but now was the time eh?![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@skiphunt : yeah, it has 8 separate stereo outputs which you can load separately too in AUM. That is perfect if you create a "performance" where you don't want to add, say, reverb to the bass, but you do want reverb & delay on the melody, etc.
@RustiK : well, as I was in the beta that is what is shown in the video: the latest beta version, which is a later version than the current official one.
Thanks! Has the correct build dropped yet?
@skiphunt not yet
Not yet.
But the old build is fine for getting a good feel of what is possible and can get down right deep in its own right.
thank you
so how many presets are in the app?
