@hellquist - Great vid!! It explains a lot about the app. Well done! And thanks!

  • @hellquist very cool beans :)

So, I managed to get my gear together and create a brief little video on what layers actually are, within LayR. I'll create more videos, especially if you suggest what I should cover.

Thanks for that, it soothed my brow in the middle of a hectic working day.

Not quite AU$32 soothed but getting there rapidly, I had Floydian vibes.

I'm almost there. Loading up to 8 LayR instruments individually into AUM sounds pretty cool.

At this point, I'm holding off to hear more variety in sound, waiting to see if the correct build is indeed stable, and would like to better understand building custom "performances" and how the arp functions. I don't want another app where the only listenable use I can get out of it is if I'm using the presets. I like presets as a starting point, but I'd like to know the customization part is intuitive enough for novices to get acceptable results.

Also, where are you getting $32 Aussie dollars? Doesn't $20 US convert to $24 AU? Do other countries have different algorithms for conversion in the app store? Or, is this a tax variance?

I can hold for a bit too but I suspect people with way more talent than me are going to make this thing sing and push me over. The appeal of doing this "all in one" is strong.

Just checked, it's AU$31 actually. I guess there is tax involved and all kinds of economic stuff that is beyond my control. I do know stuff like electronics and books are way more expensive here. No complaints, I'm going nowhere, lucky to be able to move to and live in a(nother) relatively stable and privileged country, etc.

    to me
    Hello Rustik,

    Thanks for contacting us …

I accidentally uploaded the wrong version of the app to the App Store, the correct version has been submitted, we’re waiting on approval, should be very soon, from hours to a day at most.

Not all devices are affected, but a bug affecting small screen phones, 5s, 6, 6s, 7 can make the UI lockup.

iPads are ok and the app runs ok:

The version v1.0.1 on the app store works ok, but it’s actually several months old, it’s the first beta test version that was sent out to testers!

I stupidly forgot to switch the official version over to the latest app when I submitted it!

So when v1.0.2 is finally approved by Apple hopefully tomorrow, we’ll be running again.

v1.0.2 has more features, and a lot more refinement in the UI. ( as it was tested for several months! ).

    All the best
    Andy

  • so glad the correct version has "a lot more refinement in the ui". This beta we have now is quite fiddly for me on the phone, plus the bugs

@db909 This one area where I'm particularly listening, there's a lot of UI to fit on that small space!
I think we did pretty well, but there's always room for improvement. I'd say wait until v1.0.2 comes out and then head over to our forum to feed me with your suggestions. Start a thread in the dream-on category that already exists there.

I think on the smaller screen phones that bug in v1.0.1 is probably making it particularly awkward atm.

Have you discovered already that you can swipe on the background of the Layer Editor sections instead of having to tap the buttons at the bottom, and the keyboard is moveable by dragging? You can also close the Modulator Sections that pop out of the right hand menu by swiping to the right on the background.

Also In the "real" version exploring the presets is much easier, less taps etc...

I dove in for 15 mins after reading the bugs are iPhone only. I think it'll take me another 30 mins to fully grasp it, but what I've seen so far is quite impressive. Something as simple as the a-b oscillator morph time control makes me happy. The few presets I've tried don't do it justice.

Thank you very much for this really well done video

  • Just checked for updates, nothing yet. Going to make a nice surprise when it drops in.

  • Purchased yesterday, spent a little while with it and so far this feel very much like a worthy addition to my excessive collection of awesome iOS synths. Great job, congrats and looking forward to the update.

Sounds like the same oddity that afflicted Cream Mobile at the outset. I think Layr may fare better in the aftermath.

Ah, yes thanks, totally correct, that's what I meant with "Kirnu", but I forgot the app actually was called called Cream. :)

It should actually be called butter :D Kirnu means (butter)churn in Finnish and well, you make butter with it from cream ;)

  • Come on Apple release the new update . The crowd chant grows from the depths of the forum, Apple, APple, APPle, APPLe, APPLE!

  • You crack me up dude :D
    Love your spirit!!! o:)

    Release the beast!!!!!

Looks and sounds nice but I'm waiting until this one has been worn in before I try it.
As an antidote I've been doing some layering with Twin 2 in Auria Pro and realise I should be using that synth a lot more :)

Have you bought some of the new Twin2 presets within Auria? Seems like there were new ones recently that some were raving about, but I can't remember which ones they were.

I've been going though some of the ambient patches, lots of nice ones in there.

  • @LivingMemorySoftware I actually prefer tapping the buttons to navigate on iPhone. I've accidentally swiped the background a few times and gone to another areas when I didn't mean to. It's nice to be able to move the keyboard around but I will say this, and this is likely due to the early version but anyways, the keyboard doesn't seem to want to move as quickly as I'd like it to move. Almost as though it resents the fact I've tried to to move it and is only doing so begrudgingly.

Re: Twin 2 presets...I really love the Analog Keys, Synth Classics, and Space preset packs. You can skip the Modern Pop for sure.

Thanks. Just realized I haven't even demoed all of the Twin 1&2 presets that Auria Pro comes with. Excellent stuff in there. Tried making my own starting with a clean preset. Surprised how easy it is to craft something decent on your own. And all the parameters appear to be automation recordable too!

Will keep the extra presets in mind for when I need a budget app fix. ;) Do you recall if Fab puts the presets on sale too when they do their rare annual or biannual sales?

Trying to hold off on other app purchases at the moment while I decide if this LayR app is for me. On paper, the amount of control over the sound design looks very cool... but so far the samples have sounded a bit sterile to me. Clean and lush, it also somewhat clinical. Can't put my finger on it, but lacking maybe something more organic in its character. Does that make sense?

Waiting for the proper build to drop, as well as more samples and finshed tracks created from user-designed performance/instruments. Based on the interface and implied potential, I want to get all up in this new LayR app... I just haven't heard the proof in the pudding yet. Too new I guess.

I held out forever on Geoshred, and the user hype on that beautiful beast turned out to be right on target. Hoping the prelim enthusiasm on this one turns out to be just as accurate. :)

    Dear Living Memory Software,
The status for the following app has changed to In Review.

App Name: LayR - Multi Timbral Synthesizer
    App Version Number: 1.0.2

  • Oh boy! That is all for now.

It'll be just my luck to have it rejected!! ( I jest ) I am jesting

  • If you see LayR 1.0.2 go live before I announce it ( which seems likely in this place ), please make sure you delete version 1.0.1 from your device BEFORE you download 1.0.2 otherwise it might not update correctly.

If you've made presets, save them out to iCloud drive or drag them out of LayR from iTunes, if you need help to do that, I've made a couple of tutorials on our YouTube channel, also linked on our forum .

Yeah, I think they were a dollar cheaper around Christmas sale last year. The Twin 2 is a perfect synth to learn on due to the xlfos. Just attach a couple of those to the filters/peaks and maybe one of the oscillator pitches/panning/or something funky and you've got quick fun. I also like ducking the delay by attaching an envelope follower to it so it doesn't start until the release.

As for Layr, I love the idea of multisynths in one nice package. I will use it plenty, but the sound is second-tier to me, just below the Moog/Odyssey/PPG beasts (which is in no way a bad place to be, still a B+ on iOS I'd say). It sounds less clinical than something like Addictive Pro--I've never gotten along with the VirSyns because of their sterility--but it doesn't quite have the warmth I like right out of the box (Fab Saturn can take care of this, though).

Do you now, or will you be supporting dropbox for preset sharing/storage? I don't really use icloud drive, though... I'm guessing it's pretty easy to just save to icloud drive, THEN move them from there to dropbox?

Ok... not worth holding off and waiting to grab a bunch at once during the rare sale.

Have you bought LayR? Your sonic impression sounds similar to mine (no pun intended) ;) I don't have PPG stuff (always too intimidated) But I do have Moog M15. I agreed on the Virsyn stuff (though I think they make up for it in function).

If you own LayR already, have you tried warming/dirtying it up a bit in Saturn yet? How close to Moog quality would you put the LayR synths to M15? A close, or distant second? I'm guessing your "B+" answers that.

I think I'll buy this app soon, but I'm gonna stay up on the fence a little longer I think.
