Here too, but I'd sure like to hear something of a non-preset user track first. Anyone got any custom preset tracks yet? Even some groovy noodling?

My mood is helped by being on a STRICT budget this pay cycle.

This is the one that hopefully pays off the house many years in advance. Puts an app into perspective. :)

Doubtless I will cave eventually once the lushness is unleashed. Quality software engineering and design should be rewarded.

It's good, but it's not going away, and unless you think it's likely you're going to write that song this week, I could even make a case that in terms of the time you will one day spend playing with this the most efficient course would be to benefit from the discoveries of others over the next week or two/month or two. Of course you will miss out on the camaraderie that comes with opening up a new mine, but your own gold will still be there :)

  • This could do with more presets for us non synth programmers but it is very easy to create your own layers and it has good tutorial to show how, even though I only skimmed the tutorial I was able to create a pleasing to my own ears Patch.

Lots of potential once you generous synth programmers begin sharing presets this could become one of my top three synth up there with model 15.

Well, at least my fence sitting and desire to stay distracted from the buy button, has driven me to revisit other apps I've neglected like Mitosynth, and newly purchased GeoShred. Also messing around with converting audio recordings of birds from Ecuador to midi and driving other synths with it. Getting interesting results, but I bet it'd sure be fun to point this midi file I create at some LayR instruments. Holding steady though. ;)

  • Just noticing that this already has Audioshare for a downloading option for new patchs.

  • Must say I 'm with stupi.. @skiphunt for now

Have heard lots of superlatives but not seen or heard anything that has blown me away. UI looks nice too but ..depth?

Certainly not experienced anything 20 quid sized yet.

It is much like the so called affordable health care act. You have to buy it to see what is in it. :D

  • "Quality has a price tag". , an applicable quote from another response on a different music forum applied to LayR. That does seem to be the case with this one at least.

  • Just a quick three pass noodle, slightly tweaked patches, into Cubasis with some bramsoft AUs. Please forgive the lack of polish, but man this thing is really inspiring to me and just went for a quick recording.....

  • Would be hard to resist after reading that ,had I not already recognized how deep and lush this would be from early on of course.

Yes , that was a perfect example of how rich it becomes quickly. Feeling inspired with every voyage out. Really nice work wigglelights.

  • @wigglelights At 3 minutes I was half expecting some bass n percussion to kick in and then I could be listening to this noodle for hours. Very nice demo

Programming impressions: seems to me that the way to do it is to begin freely adding layers, creating links between them, and freely navigate back and forth between them. The app makes this easy to do with the links and copy/paste of different synth sections and/or entire layers. I was doing one layer at a time and while it sounded rather nice, things weren't really flying off the rails so I thought that perhaps the above is probably the efficient way to fast results. As for the instruments vs layers paradigm, the instruments can be thought of as send tracks that group the layers into a pre master fader, midi channel, keyboard range, and note mode (poly, mono, legato). The layers have their own faders and panning. Hope that helps make sense.

Was up until sunrise on a preset-making bender with this thing running through my monitor system. It's a next level inspiring giant IMHO. And a significant advancement on this platform. Where it really, really shines for me is in the evolving Drone and texture department, in part due to the extensive modulation capabilities and the ability to create so many layers and key ranges. But it will also give you beautiful keys, stabbing synths and most everything in between. So if you're on the fence about buying it, I am here to push you over the edge B)

It's hard to find anything at all wrong with it, but here are a few things that lean toward the "complaints" department:

    • This is highly subjective, but to my ears it tends to sound a little "cold" in general. There is a high frequency range, very high on the scale, that seems to be lacking. "Air" and "sizzle" might best describe it. A subtle saturation with harmonics that contribute to an overall warmth. Running it through saturation plugins really adds a lot to the overall character of its sound. Alternatively, a layer from the noise oscillator tucked in the background, highpass filtered with some audio rate modulation can add a bit of that sizzle. As can a slight boost on the master EQ.

    • Maybe I haven't found it yet (?) but having the ability to only send certain instruments / layers through the master effects and being able to adjust that level would huge. For example: sending a subbass layer through the massive reverb I want on the high frequency synth layer just leads to a muddy mess. Being able to keep the sub layer dry, or just sent through the EQ effect only would be of great benefit. From my understanding you can run a multi-out performance in AUM across multiple channels as an alternative. But it'd be nice to have a send FX controls built into the app.

Aside from those microscopic things this synth really is a masterpiece.

  • I still have not found a way to assign an envelope to control 'FM-Depth/Amount' or individually control the pitch of oscillators A & B within one layer.(Do I really need to use 2 layers for a simple detuned saw-wave?!?).

Hopefully LayR will improve in the modulation/routings department in the future so I'll keep it installed but for now I'm not overly impressed by it...

Lol thanks. Glad I was not drinking coffee.

  • @Samu envelope 1 can control fm. There's a dial for it. I suppose you would just only use that dial and envelope without the other lfos. And yeah I think you do need to use multiple layers, but that's where the simple copy paste comes in. Just +1 a new layer(duplicate the one you're on) detune, and go. This can be done from within the editing page. Then if you want to control both at the same time, you hold a dial (filter cutoff for example) and link them with groups.

  • Suggest we meet back under this tree in 12 months and compare notes.

The envelope does not control 'FM-Depth'. It controls the pitch for both A&B oscillators and the 'amount' of modulation is controlled with the FM knob.
(So what I'm after here is an envelope that controls the 'level/depth' of an LFO that is running at audio-rate).

  • When one brings beatific light to the world it amazes me how people complain about the color of the light.

This is a bloody brilliant and amazing synth and the fact that it's a 1.0 is to be commended.

If the dev is reading this thread, please be patient parsing through the comments to find the gem of feedback to continue to evolve this synth from the high bar you set it up to operate from.

You've created a synth of beauty hear.

    Cheers,

  • @Samu when I hit the info button it says "env 1 fm amount"

Truth in this. Especially the 1.0 part. If this app is garnering this much praise for a first release of this dev's first synth attempt, and even comparing it to the venerable Moog Model 15, then that's a significant achievement in itself.

I can't speak for other fences-sitters, only for myself. If I wasn't very much interested in this synth, I wouldn't be asking as many questions. I'd just ignore this thread and read topics I was more interested in. I think the issue is that I've bought a lot of apps that were highly praised when they came out. Floods of accolades and hyperbole. I've fallen for it time and time again. Only, to discover a couple of weeks later the app is already gathering dust. Didn't ultimately live up to the hype, or was far too complicated with a steep learning curve to be of any real use or joy. The forum hype had already moved on to the next big shiny new toy, no one even mentions it again, and another folder of forgotten apps gets a bit thicker.

My questioning is merely an attempt to be more thoughtful with my app purchases and remain focussed on what I will actually use and garner some benefit from.

Seems not everyone is on board with this app yet, but it's too early to tell. I'm ready to buy once I hear something or see a video demo that makes me go "Oh yes, I could really make something satisfying with this thing." I haven't heard that yet. Though a couple of the more recent ones by @hellquist and @wigglelights are inching my finger closer to that buy button. ;)

  • Wow!!!!! That was sooooo beautiful!!!!
    Please share that patch dude.

Was alr day coming up with a song!!!

Is there a manual pdf now i missed? Sorry but i'm still not sold really (but still interested).
Much euphoric here (which is nice of course) but still nothing outstanding compared to other tools (sorry, just what i hear and see).
I hope i get not banned for critic here but i'm still waiting to get excited and these days i have a "cold" and "critic" look at every synth, no matter for which price or OS it is. I often miss in the iOS world "real" reviews and critics from a more technical side.
Everything is "awesome" and "stunning". Then i buy and think WTF, good but not "stunning".
Again, sorry if that sounds too harsh! I just say what i mean (yeah, i'm in trouble sometimes because of that).

I know, but it does not work like that in practice :)
    (This could be a 'bug').

Ie. you should be able to use an Audio-Rate LFO(LFO1 or 2) as the 'modulator' and control the amount of modulation wth envelope 1 (Think of it as being able to control the output from the LFO with an envelope).

The current ENV 1 to FM controls the pitch of the oscillators and not the amount of modulation.

You can easily test this by setting the modulation index to 4(1-4 buttons under the modulation dials).
Drive up the LFO1 to full. For LFO1 set keyboard follow to on and rate to about 300hz.

Play some notes and wiggle around with the FM knob to get very familiar FM-Sounds.

Now if you add the 'Env 1 to FM' you will just get a 'pitch sweep' instead of controlling the amount of modulation.

I really do smell a 'bug' to be completely honest...

No rush. It's not as if they're going to run out of copies of Layr anytime soon!
The synth looks neat and the UI is super-innovative (even if I have absolutely NO idea what some of the higher order complaints are about). But the patches I've heard so far remind me of the music they play in a new-age aromatherapy studio. So far, anyway.

Well here's a plus I just discovered: in addition to the presets, you can audition individual instruments/components of said presets. So there's fun to be had mixing and matching with different instruments from the presets and your own.

    +1

More than a little interested but still no cigar, yet.

  • (Sigh) anyone else get crackles on the even the init preset iPhone5s 10.2.1?

  • I really want to like this. Still not convinced I wouldn't be making music for Jack Horkheimer, though.

Not the worst thing, I guess.
