  • They are all fired up about this app over on the iPad musician group too. They can not sing it's praises loudly enough already. You are going to love this or not but the love it is definitely carrying the day so far . Mr. layR developer you appear to have a winner here.

This is a bloody brilliant and amazing synth and the fact that it's a 1.0 is to be commended.

If the dev is reading this thread, please be patient parsing through the comments to find the gem of feedback to continue to evolve this synth from the high bar you set it up to operate from.

You've created a synth of beauty hear.

Not sure if this is in response to my comment. Regardless, it is the feedback from users that make great synths even greater over time. My "complaints" are on a microscopic level, far outweighed by my high praises for this achievement. As I very clearly stated.

Certainly not experienced anything 20 quid sized

Truth in this. Especially the 1.0 part. If this app is garnering this much praise for a first release of this dev's first synth attempt, and even comparing it to the venerable Moog Model 15, then that's a significant achievement in itself.

I can't speak for other fences-sitters, only for myself. If I wasn't very much interested in this synth, I wouldn't be asking as many questions. I'd just ignore this thread and read topics I was more interested in. I think the issue is that I've bought a lot of apps that were highly praised when they came out. Floods of accolades and hyperbole. I've fallen for it time and time again. Only, to discover a couple of weeks later the app is already gathering dust. Didn't ultimately live up to the hype, or was far too complicated with a steep learning curve to be of any real use or joy. The forum hype had already moved on to the next big shiny new toy, no one even mentions it again, and another folder of forgotten apps gets a bit thicker.

My questioning is merely an attempt to be more thoughtful with my app purchases and remain focussed on what I will actually use and garner some benefit from.

Seems not everyone is on board with this app yet, but it's too early to tell. I'm ready to buy once I hear something or see a video demo that makes me go "Oh yes, I could really make something satisfying with this thing." I haven't heard that yet. Though a couple of the more recent ones by @hellquist and @wigglelights are inching my finger closer to that buy button. ;)

    +1

More than a little interested but still no cigar, yet.

Same here, but the wigglelights track was very lovely. Maybe a Doug vid or sale price will knock me off the fence.

I'd like to hear evidence of a bit more lushness....I'd use this for evolving pads and 'scapes, so I'd like to hear a bit more richness and depth.

The price is too high (for me) for a punt, so need demo's to see/hear what makes it different to all the other synths in my box.

I really want to like this. Still not convinced I wouldn't be making music for Jack Horkheimer, though.

Not the worst thing, I guess.

    That video made my day.

This could do with more presets for us non synth programmers but it is very easy to create your own layers and it has good tutorial to show how, even though I only skimmed the tutorial I was able to create a pleasing to my own ears Patch.

Lots of potential once you generous synth programmers begin sharing presets this could become one of my top three synth up there with model 15.

    What's the third one?

Try tuning down amount of layers (in settings in app).

Do you have this synth yet? I really liked your recent track you did with your soon to be launched Quantum sequencer controlling Model 15... mesmerizing. Would love to hear what your Quantum could do with a complex LayR instrument.

I did buy it today, but busy with work & some more coding so haven't tried it much yet.
I'm looking forward to trying out multiple (up to 24 sequences playing) on Layr as it, like a general midi player, need lots of tracks (=layers). Quantum is like a 6 head Fugue Machine but with independent play heads that can be split up to four times (and play different tempos, directions, notes etc).

I did notice the sounds disappear at higher midi octaves(so not sure yet if a bug or something I'm doing), I couldn't see where to turn off monophonic mode on one patch I tried - but that's just me I'm sure.

The fact there is a noise sound is always good for dark ambient.... but I'm going to be looking for midi control on things like waveform....

As you know I love driving synths from sequencers - you get a lot more exotic sounds that way even on a basic sound than by playing with a keyboard. imo anyway....

Been preparing for a wedding I am DJing tomorrow so I had the truss set up with my 12 DMX lights. Scanners, colorbars , laser, light balls, Elans and a Vue iii. Ran the iPad into a 2400 watt Behringer PA. And controlled LayR with the Oxygen 49. Wicked great fun until I realized I was getting carried away and still had some testing to do for tomorrow! I have to pack everything up for the trip to the celebration venue now but it was sensory overload here for awhile. Good times for sure. My dining room was filled hahah.

I believe there's an adjustable key range per instrument, which is a thoughtful touch so that bass signals don't try to squeak up higher than they belong, etc..

  • @midiSequencer monophonic or not is set on the notes icons right of the instrument volume slider in performance view. One is poly, 2 are monophonic and the bottom one glides between monophonic notes.

Not quite. I'll likely get it though... just not in a burning hurry. Still playing with my birds and rediscovering other apps that I never fully unpacked. The jury seems to be fairly split on this one too, but leaning more toward it being a winner. The birdies do sound swell driving Animoog though. :)

I've got another thread going about it, but in short... experimenting with converting audio to midi, then taking that data to drive other synths and remix with source audio with fx. Currentmly I'm messing with an audio recording I recently made in Ecuador in an area with a vast variety of exotic birds. The tones are much more varied than in other areas I've been to. Makes for an interesting source for conversion and it's almost musical.

I was looking for a way to convert audio to midi in iOS, but it looks like it's much better handled using Flex Pitch in Logic Pro X. So, I converted it there and moved it back over to iOS to play with.

It was mentioned because I suggested feeding the converted bird source midi into these LayR instruments might be interesting.

  • Thanks or the many kind comments - means a lot!

To answer a couple of the questions -
I was on a mission to knock something out, and purposefully tried to not be distracted.... The three patches I tweaked I didn't save, and although there was an urge to put some Drumjam in there I resisted...
As mentioned I did use some bramsoft AUs - chorus and a touch of overdrive on the sweepy part, OD on the lead, and reverb on all - plus a touch of compression and eq from Cubasis to get thing to sit apart....

    Thanks again!

Don't mean to derail this thread, but I have discovered @midiSequencer's soundcloud.

Holy cow! It's awesome. There's a new midisequencer coming? Do tell. I wouldn't have thought I needed this with SPA and modstep and Magellan/Odyssei/Model 15 and all the synths with heavy duty arps. But every track on your soundcloud is remarkable (except for the Sunrizer one, which didn't move me). I think I need this app, unless there's going to be a new iteration soon. Details!

UPDATE: This very question was posed in this thread. Still no answers, but THAT is the place for midisequencer/quantum discussion. Apologies.
