New iPad Pro 12.9” (2017) - problem with latency and digital noise... SEEMS TO BE FIXED iOS 11.1 b2

Comments

  • I have experienced some audio digital glitching on a 12.9 iPad Pro running iOS 11.0.3 if I have a complex setup and the latency setting isn't set to a long enough setting when I switch between apps or open up an AU in AUM. The digital glitch goes away when I close the AU window or the focus of the iPad is on the app I switched to.

Setting up a similar setup on my iPad Mini 2 running iOS 10.3.3 I get similar glitching and have to set the latency rate a couple settings longer plus the DSP % is much higher too.

At the higher latency rate, the setup works well on both iPads. Clearly the iPad Pro performs much better but there is some competition between the graphic and audio that still needs to be sorted out as the iPad Pro ought to be able to perform much better provided the issues with iOS 11, the new iPad Pros, and once apps have been updated if necessary to optimize the iOS music creation setup (par for the course with iOS).

Not been getting any random latency or digital noise the comes out of nowhere and doesn't go away very quickly. The digital audio noise/latency issues may be enough to be a significant concern for live performance.

  • I do get significant easily and predictably recreatable audio glitching on my less than a week old 2017 12.9 iPad Pro updated from iOS 10.3.3 to iOS 11.0.3 due to GUI animation changes and setting the screen refresh rate to 60 fs did not resolve the problem for the same setup that runs glitch free on my iPad Air 2:

  • @InfoCheck you know you’re not on the version of iOS that has the fix yet? It should be released soon.

    Gotcha. Thanks for testing.

Ouch! Good illustration of the sort of problem encountered on 11.03 and before. I wonder when 11.1 will be public. Best if they make sure any remaining audio problems on the pro2 are sorted out first. I haven’t had any.
Are you going to make a nearly identical screen recording with audio using 11.1 beta? The ios devs might like to see both.

I just installed iOS 11 public beta and the audio glitches are still there. There’s no need to do a screen recording of the setup with the iOS 11 beta as the glitching is the same, no improvement.

Mine is an iPad Pro WiFi 256 less than a week old. Here’s the Audiobus 3 preset I’m running at a latency setting of 128 frames. If I increase the latency to 256 frames, the glitching goes away. The same preset and 128 frame latency is not an issue on the iPad Air 2.
    Audiobus preset 'CfAUM4synRvb01': http://preset.audiob.us/aVvHfWcoSQ6NZOB

This level of performance might be acceptable for some but when my three year old iPad Air 2 is out performing the 12.9 iPad Pro, it’s not acceptable to me. Unless something changes in the next week, I’ll be returning the iPad Pro and wait until the iOS music creation environment stabilizes before investing. The screen on my iPad Air 2 has become detached from the case so I want maximum performance from my iOS devices. The next iOS device will be resold just before its two year AppleCare runs out as I don’t want to be left holding the bag. I don’t want to spend my money on a product with a limited shelf life, I’m okay with taking a chance on leasing one for two years.

Very interesting. Yes, I get the same results on the new 10.5. The 128 frame glitching seems to coincide with actions that change the screen view (i.e. just using the iPad but I’m trying to be technical here...).

So you don’t get this on the older iPad at 128?

    Hmmmm.

It reminds me of the iOS 7 days when there was a development lag with iOS and the constant glitching due to competition between audio and video resources on iOS devices, been there done that and don’t want to again.

    @InfoCheck
I haven’t tried a similar setup to yours, so maybe that’s why I’ve not encountered this problem.
If you do make another video and send it through Feedback to the beta devs, they should be able to pinpoint what is happening. Very useful.
Could one of your apps be the culprit, or conflicting settings?
@gusgranite , can you reproduce infocheck’s problem with the AUM setup ?

I’ve sent the video of the beta setup to Apple via their feedback app as suggested along with details about the setup.

Increasing latency setting from 128 frames rate to 256 frames resolves the issue yet the iPad Air works as expected at 128 frames.

  • Hey everyone. Just joined AB forum because of this issue.. I've got the 10.5 iPad and have just installed the latest iOS 11.1 Beta. The latency seemed to be solved for me when i updated to the first iOS 11 release but I'm still getting the issue you see in the video. It's like an audio/GUI freeze when you enter a gadget screen.

I only really use Gadget so I can't comment on other apps but does anyone else experience this? Really annoying when it runs perfectly fine on my old iphone... So far I have tried reinstalling Gadget but no dice... Wah!

  • edited October 2017

    Well this is disturbing,
This is not me but I feel this has to be fixed asap

  • Korg won't let that problem slide and nor will Jonathan... we're nearly there guys - little bit longer and these problems should be ironed out...

Such a shame .. I was thinking the problems were solved as well, until I just now created an intensive multi-instrument AUM patch similar to InfoCheck, and the audio glitches were indeed extreme when moving the mixer panel around. My iPad is the 2017 12.9 iPad Pro, 512gb.

The issue first came up in Geoshred Pro a couple weeks ago, Though it seemed to vanish soon after the 11.02 update. The support team for Wizdommusic originally thought it might have something to do with iOS 11 re-indexing the internal storage, though I’ve had iOS 11 now since just before public release. Currently running 11.03.

The audio glitch didn’t show up in the digital recording made with geoshred , just in live play. I may try to see if it shows up in a recording of the AUM patches.

The following is a small clip of me reproducing the audio glitch issue with a few instruments/effects in AUM. Note: I just picked up AUM last night, so I know next to nothing about how to use it yet, in case anyone notices any oddball settings or what-not. Just now starting to learn music production on iOS in general. I was throwing up instruments at random just to reproduce infocheck’s glitch scenario.

  • I get that kind of thing also on my mac when i have a complex set-up but if people say that older iPads can handle the same there must be something wrong. It seems that the GUI still get the focus and audio won´t get the full cpu usage they may need in this case.

The problems are (allegedly) fixed in 11.1 beta 2.

Not sure what is going on with Gadget though. Hope it is Gadget only and fixable by Korg.

Yep, I’m 11.03. I sincerely hope so, re: 11.1 .. Someone above mentioned having tried the latest 11.1 beta
And the issue still being present, so it’s hard to get hopes up.

I have gadget, just purchased all the IAP for it except for the chip tune one .. I haven’t used it extensively yet, but haven’t noticed any issues so far on my end. About to give it a more thorough workout.

The 12.9 iPad Pro is on 11.1 public beta 2. I’m not sure if the issue can be resolved via iOS updates or not and at this point it under performs relative to my iPad Air 2 on iOS 10.3.3 and iPhone 6 on iOS 11.0.3 using the same Audiobus 3 presets. Changing one AU synth instance can eliminate the issue (e.g. Plectrum for Zeeon) or increasing the latency in the apps from 128 to 256 frames.

In the past when I purchased a new iOS device it significantly outperformed my previous iOS devices for audio. The 2017 12.9 iPad Pro at this point reverses that trend. Updates to iOS and/or apps might eliminate this audio performance disparity; however, I’m not sure if it can or will be so I’m not comfortable keeping a new iOS device that might not have room for growth in terms of being able to run more complex setups or more DSP intensive apps. If the employees at Apple had been able to answer my questions at the time of purchase, I would have waited until the 12.9 iPad Pro audio performance levels met my expectations. Many users might be okay with the current level of performance and be willing to ride things out in anticipation of improved performance.

If my iPad Air 2 hadn’t had problems with the screen separating from the case on one side, I wouldn’t have considered the 12.9 iPad Pro purchase either nor if they didn’t have a 14 day return policy.

Hopefully the iPad Pro audio performance will improve as iOS and apps are updated and that Apple didn’t decide to sacrifice audio performance to improve video performance which isn’t my top priority.

I’ll definitely do that. I was wanting a 12.9 iPad Pro even before the issues with the iPad Air 2 came up.

  • iOS 11Public Beta 3 here, after over 1 hour of testing there is still no latency issue.

  • Is the AU instancing fixed too ?
