Gadget update - Montpellier

  • I guess it must be costly to convert a synth to Gadget after it's already been coded otherwise they would have released ims20 and ipolysix as Gadgets. Would be lovely to see an ims20 AUv3 though.

    I wish...

Gadget would get a linear sequencer as well...i hate the gadget sequencer as most vocals dont start on the 1...or leads most of the time...making this sequencer just a pattern machine for me.

Better audio tracks with a little bit of editing ability...lacks

a sampler with sampling ability and chopping? with per pad efx etc

    add an audiounit gadget?

    ms20 gadget?

    vocoder gadget?

    guitar gadget with strings?

a universal set of kaoss pads for all gadgets?

the ability to use the guitar amp on other gadgets...i find it useless as is as i dont play guitar.

Its such a premium priced app when buying all iaps etc...and its a closed system...so a few problems need solved before it is 100% worth it to me.

I like gadget...but I want to love it

A linear sequencer would be great and AU as well; however Gadget is not as closed of a system as there are ways to route the midi to Cubasis for example. I can route the gadgets to tracks in Cubasis and have several instances of certain gadgets in different track. I can sequence them in Cubasis and edit the midi in that DAWs piano roll.

    Worst demo song ever.

Agreed. The band S U R V I V E used a Mony/Poly all over their "Stranger Things" soundtrack, and that John Carpenter sound is popular again, but they create this demo?

Loving the sound of preset SWEET SURVIVOR.

To my ears it sounds incredibly close to the synth sound of "KIDS" from the Stranger Things soundtrack. As you mentioned the soundtrack is performed by Michael Stein & Kyle Dixon from S U R V I V E.

    Coincidence in the naming? ;)

  • They said they are going to do the Radias?

You can route the MIDI from Gadget to Cubasis, even as separate tracks?
    How, please?

Or do you mean the file export?

Well you are actually controlling Gadget with the midi from Cubasis, with each track controlling a separate gadget, You can record the midi back into Gadget but for me timing is an issue. You can Also record the audio from the whole thing or individual tracks (for example by using AUM recording Gadget). People also mention using Gadget in Modstep.

When I was making music in the late 90s with my collection of analogue synths and no computer, my Mono/Poly was almost definitely my most used synth. Along with my Roland SH-09 and CSQ-600 (which I still have).

So I'm curious what you think of this app. Had a chance to hear it in person? The videos don't impress me.

  • I think people have chosen the wrong time to jump off the Korg bandwagon.
This is their best work yet.

  • I swore I was not going to but it is now downloading as I type/ sounds just way to awesome for me to pass on. And yet another piece of history incorporated to my ipad.

I just haven't heard anything compelling yet. Looks sweet and I love XY pads.

  • Still not even tempted! This is such a new feeling. Hope it lasts. B)

I was not tempted and then just as if Magic, bam I was, and now it is mine and it has some really great patches no doubt about that. Some really nice deep sounds coming out of this one. Great work again Korg, thanks.

    I haven't.

Also, to add, in my 'gear' album on flickr there's a bunch of photos of my Mono/Poly which I took last year for ebaying when I let it go. Scroll to the more recent pics. Lots of other synth pics there too (and non-synth gear).

I think it's still a bit 'speculative' as there is a folder called Radias MMF inside the Gadget.app bundle.
There is still a monopoly folder inside the Gadget.app bundle in addition to the newly released Montpellier Gadget.
So yeah digging in the Gadget bundle can be quite amusing...
(I've yet to check if the two additional .mp4bank files found inside the iMono/Poly bundle contain more presets as I've already installed the patches from the KLC version of Mono/Poly).

  • I feel the same as when the iWavestation or whatever it's called came out. It looks great and I want it, but I don't need it. I've got too many similar synths to choose from already, and they didn't cost £20 on intro price.> @u0421793 said:

Great photos - Roger Glover? Reminds me of my mates place with a Mellotron, Hammon and crappy old PA in the corner of the front room with 'Genesis' stencilled on the back.

  • Possible to use this as IAA (in modstep or cubasis) in standalone mode? How about midi channels, listens all channels?

wow, that @u0421793 picture collection was impressive

(in the meantime iMono/Poly / Montpellier made it onto my wishlist)

ERf? Is that a walkman phone?

  • Love the sounds coming out of Montpellier (am only using in Gadget, really) but am totally flummoxed about how to engage/disengage the arp functionality or access the XY pads. Any help?

Or do you mean the file export?

If you turn on advanced midi in Gadget, you can give each track/synth its own midi channel, basically transforming Gadget into a 16-part multitimbral sound module.

You could save a Gadget song (as a preset containing all the synths and settings) and then send midi to Gadget from Cubasis or another daw. This would make loading up a song a 2-step process (load Gadget song, then load song in Cubasis) but that’s a bit like using presets in AB, just faster and more reliable since everything works in Gadget.

I’ve not tried this, as I like working in Gadget, but it does seem to make for a pretty sweet setup and make Gadget no so closed as some think ;-)

Again, this is not what was written ;-)
    MIDI into Gadget is easy.

Above, it was written to get MIDI Out from Gadget...

    So, the other way around

Yeah - I doubt midi out will ever come to Gadget

It might be worth mentioning (if it already hasn't) that Korg might actually be adding this gadget for free to the Mac version soon.

    • In the case of KORG Gadget for Mac, this is expected to be added in a future update.

That doesn't necessarily indicate it's going to be free but since there hasn't been a way to purchase IAPs on the Mac version yet it might very well be. So if you're one of the few (like myself) that have the Mac version you could get it that way.

I've been using the Mac version a lot, especially because I haven't been using my iPad much lately, so I have stopped purchasing IOS versions of their products. I'm three or four gadgets behind on the IOS version. If I start a project oo the IOS version I just use one of the gadgets I already have with that version then substitute it for one of the missing ones when I export the project to the Mac version.

It's quite possible I may go back to heavy iPad use in the future but I will worry about that if and when that time comes.

Korg could add many things. It's a premium priced app on iOS, which means it's pretty inexpensive---40 dollars, and then you can add whatever additional sound modules you want or can afford. What it comes with isn't enough for me, but I could get by with fewer IAPs if I had to.

I can see if someone doesn't like the sound, or the way compositions are built within it, Gadget isn't going to be worth much. For what it is, I think it makes sense for a big company like Korg. I think on iOS they want to see it as a reliable all-in-one sketchpad that sounds good. Maybe they don't like how AUv3 is implemented? And it's a smaller screen size for a UI, so compromises must be made? They push forward more slowly on the less solid foundation of iOS? In order to be more reliable, they must maintain tighter control? Whatever, I don't know... I can create a piece and export audio and/or MIDI for each track. Fully functional for me, but I don't need it to do anything more than it does.

  • I really wish I knew last week that this was going to be released, when macOS gadget was on sale (assuming it'll appear on macOS gadget sooner or later).
