  • While I can understand the desire to do beatboxes. I would personally like to see Jim make an alternative in the vain of RippleMaker - I much prefer those ‘0 Coast’ style boxes that have been around in the hardware world

You can from AudioShare send to the GR's Imports folder that is visible to the Files.app :D
(Or if you're running iOS11 in the Files.app browse to the sample you want to import, tap copy and paste it into GR's Imports folder).

  • I love me some Poison action (and the added Jakob Haq presets) but I'm not sure what this "pre-ordering" malarky is all about. "Half price for a limited time for the first buyers!!!" apparently but this seems very woolly.

I'm sure it's great and all (if, as previously commented, it fits in your workflow) but I'm not sure I jibe with the "pay now, see what you get later" angle. I'd rather get it when it's released in a brutally cut-down form for a token cost and see if it fits and THEN upgrade to full cost later rather than commit up front under the threat of it doubling in price.

It just feels a bit lop-sided to me.

Not a judgement on the quality of the app, just an observation on the marketing. I hope it's great FWIW.

Preordering is for suckers and fan-club members!

  • @Samu how is the step sequencer like. Specifically, is it the leectribe way of 2 rows of 8 steps, or 1 row of 16?
Have been missing the Electribe ever since I sold it :-)

    On the iPad it's 2 x 8 like the on the Electrbie 2 and on the iPhone it's 1 x 16.

  • Can you set it up to chain together 4 patterns for 64 steps and then record over that length?

Chaining is playback only for now just like on the machine that inspired it.
...but that doesn't mean things wont change in the future, but that's the way it is now.

To be totally honest it's more of a 'performance groovebox' rather than a app to write complete songs on...

Pre ordering is my commitment to the dev who brought us the amazing Poison 202 and I’ve seen and read enough about this app to know it’s an instabuy. I will also secure the best deal at launch :)

  • I preordered as I couldn't resist and the dev has proven himself in my eyes. You can also cancel your preorder anytime if you want before it charges you if you get cold feet.

Just go to the App Store and type it in the search box- you need iOS 11.2 or later to do this though.

if your connected to the U.S. store than:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/groove-rider-gr-16/id1318750537?mt=8

And I had to do it on OS 11.2 to be able to do it. On my iPhone 5 (OS 10) it only shows a greyed out preorder.

I preordered.. after his first app, and my love of the Prodigy..... I can’t see how this app will be anything than great.
do imported files have to be trimmed up and ready to go before importing, or can they be trimmed with if the app? obviously one will want to use mostly
short samples. but is there a sample length restriction that you know of?

  • I thought my addiction had reached its zenith, its nadir, the top of the very bottom, but no, now I will buy my little dopamine hit without even being able to open the object. She used to take my whiskey and pour it straight into the toilet, muttering that old cuts out the middle man thing, only now do I understand....

There's no built-in sample-editing but you can zoom-in (swipe up/down on the wave-form) and set the start and end of the sample and there is a 10 seconds per sample limit as far as I know and I think it's mono for now...

Neat tricks to try is to set the length minimum and control the sample start with an ramp-envelope/lfo for some granular mayhem / old school time stretching or simply have fun automating the start-point for each triggered note.

Slicing is done manually with 16 slices per sample with control over start, end and pitch but no reversing per slice for now.

Another way to 'time stretch' is to set the sample length(beats/bars) and enable pitch-adjust, this way the sample will be tuned to match the tempo.

Even though it may appear 'simple' there's enough stuff under the hood to keep one busy for quite a while :)

  • I think this is a worthy developer but a bad trend. I fear this leads to a future where the initial early-adopter sale is available without any demos or road testing. Not willing to buy blind, no matter how wonderful the developer is. (Salient point: I really hate Prodigy, so....)

That's life. I mean I know of no apps where we've gotten a sh*t load of demo-videos and road testing prior to launch especially from a single indie-developers. Most apps go on sale from time to time too and there's no mention yet on how long the sale will last :)

No, I don't mean I need to see demos before the app goes up in the App Store. I'm only concerned that there won't be an initial sale EXCEPT for the pre-buy. I've grown accustomed to having a week to listen to the wisdom of the crowd before I decide to buy an app, when I can still benefit from being an early adopter. I don't mind the app being buggy if it has features and sound I like.

Ok, I think the sale will last at least a couple of weeks, I'm pretty sure of that :)
(He's well aware that the app needs more practical exposure to spark interest, our 'well know video makers' already have access to the beta but I guess they prioritise other things or are simply too busy).

That is normally my thinking as well, but this hits a sweet spot for me. I love groove boxes, it is only $9.99 and I have been a good boy and restricted my buying lately.

  • Probably this will be my last app store urchase this year. But as with all apps, just want to see the demo's and YT review(s) first. Pulled the trigger to fast in the past ;)

  • I'm in, I've got the poison so I need the antidote.
