  • Playing with the algorithms in the synth is a lot of fun.

  • Dirac is in there for something because if you open the right panel I believe under "about" it credits DIRAC. Also, could it be that its something like Audiobus where you can implement certain parts of the technology (ie; transport icons in side panel or even input/effect/output slots)

  • Yeah, it will be cool when we can use the scenes to alter the synths a little more.

  • It's already pretty much a love feast for me :-) I'm looking forward to the updates!

@gjcyrus, it will be interesting to hear more from developer re: current usage and future plans for DIRAC...

I only get sound through audiobus, but not when played standalone. Did I miss something? A tutorial video would be nice too, or a manual.

p.s. weired, just lying in the bed, connected the earphones, sound. Disconnected and now also sound out of the speakers.

  • edited December 2013

The connecting and disconnecting the earphones and getting weird audio behavior (like the sound being routed to the ear speaker, amongst other things) is courtesy iOSs buggy CoreAudio. At least that's my experience with Auria, and reading posts from the Auria dev about it.

The loop slicer isn't hard to figure out. When you tap once anywhere on the wave, this is where the loop will be trigger on the loop sequencer. Tap and drag anywhere on the wave will cause that part to be time-stretched. Double-tap the warp markers to erase them. Help file pretty much says that.

The warp markers work somewhat like ableton live but I found them a bit hard to be precise with it. This needs work or it would work better if they were implemented like in Ableton live.

It would be nice it this would also be a loop slicer in the traditional sense where you just drag the slice and re-order/duplicate them by hand. A bit like the app Tuareg 2.5 I was mentioning earlier. Throw in some pitchup/down for each slice for extra fx.

Dirac is already in there for the warp markers I believe.

  • I would love a tutorial for the loop slicer and sampler!

@JM Sexton, dj8 and paradiddle - yeah, like I said in my post, I should be fair to the dev as DIRAC is in there and I should've been more specific in my question on first page of this thread that I was looking for DIRAC time independent pitchshift/timestretch instead of only DIRAC timestretch. But the fact that 24 bit isnt working isnt cool as I was hoping to make full use of this app during the xmas holidays but alas will probably just delete this app for time being to make space until at least 24 bit sample bug can be fixed. If 24 bit had worked, I would've kept my mouth shut but since I specifically asked for that, not cool. Did some of you beta testers ever stick in a 24 bit sample? Or was changing the background to a different color more important?

  • @gjcyrus Are you wanting 24bit because your sample library is 24bit and it won't load them or because you want 24bit audio?

  • Am I missing something here? Audiocopy only works with 16-bit, right? I used AudioShare to convert to 24-bit, imported both samples into NXT and it plays both 16 and 24.

  • edited December 2013

@syrupore - both. I record a lot of song ideas in Auria at 24 bit and would like to play them in Next. In addition, there are some drum samples I also have that I'd like to use on ios but haven't found any app (except for beat machine) to use unless they're converted in beatmaker. I'd also like to make use of these samples from Beatport:
    http://sounds.beatport.com/

@trueyorky - how are you importing 24 bit into Next? Yes, you are correct audiocopy cant copy 24 bit but general pasteboard can. I've tried testing general copying16 bit and 24 bit files from audioshare into next and the only ones that work are 16 bit files.

If I'm a clueless fool, I will happily apologize and sing it's praises but until then, it's just another buggy app.

EDIT: Some positive news! After reading trueyorky's post, I thought there might be a way to import 24 bit audio into Next from audioshare directly without audiocopy/general pasteboard and found out Samplewiz can take 24 bit audio with DIRAC time independent time stretch but Next did not pop up in options from audioshare

  • That master comp/limiter keeps giving that really nasty loud POP/Crackly sound when starting a track, after loading a project up. Also, something weird with the 4 save slots next to it. Sometimes it'll recall a completely different setting, again ruining your speakers/ears. Gotta get thing under control. :/ Other then that, I'm still having too much fun with it to really had the opportunity to really dig under the hood of it all. Anyway, please take a look at getting that loud pop under control (no one else getting that?), also turning the ratio knob to an aggressive setting also needs some more love. ;)

  • It might be a good idea to scale our expectations to a realistic level. The hope of running two full featured workstation apps in sync using 24 bit audio and Dirac technology could stress a laptop, much more so a (relatively) low power tablet designed for tweens to play games on. Not long ago we were thrilled to have a good synth app on the platform. Some devs are pushing the envelope now but it's not magic.

@smeeth - yeah I agree with you but look on page 1 of this thread. I specifically asked for that feature. If dev said that it would come in a future update, i could respect that as I understand that it is very hard for developers to do what they do and would anxiously wait but he specifically said "24 bit check" and it was also supposedly beta tested. Dont overpromise and underdeliver. Audiobus guys got it right and thats why they're successful. Audiobus is still 16 bit but not once have I ever complained about it because they never promised it. It's still great and revolutionary nonetheless but they managed expectations.

With all the complaining about ios 7 around here, I think even most devs can respect where I'm coming from

  • I really need some help with how the looper and sampler options work, guys. I have no idea what I'm doing and want to mash up some beats!

  • @Michael The mistake I kept making with the looper when I first started was trying to drag to select sections which only succeeds in warping them badly and was frustrating as their seemed to be no way to accurately make a selection. The thing is that's not how it works!

I've outlined how I think it works below but I'm sure I'm still missing a few thing...

If you drop a properly trimmed loop into the looper it automatically loops it at the same tempo as the track. All you have to do is select the start point for each part you want to play. If you touch the waveform the start point moves to the nearest 16th. If you touch in the sequencer it will drop an event with the number of that 16th. Note that it will play the whole loop starting from that point unless another event interrupts it or you use automation to silence it.

If for example you touch on the 5th 16th on a one bar loop and then place an event on 1,5,9,13 in the sequencer they will al be numbered 5 and you will have a looping bar made up of the second beat of the original sample.

The warp markers don't work quite like Ableton. If your about to select a start point but you can see that it's not quite on the beat try touching just before the note start and drag slightly to the left. You can adjust by dragging the warp handle created. You should find that you can pull the start of the transient right on to the beat so that it starts tightly on the event.

    Hope this helps.

  • edited December 2013

@Skipp Thanks very much for that! I'd like the 16ths to be overlayed on the wave form, I think. I can see the handles below by selecting that option (and can move them) but an overlay would help visually. The warp markers confuse me, though, when I can see the wave form changing as I drag. Is there any more advice on that?

Doug, I'd love you to do a video explaining the screens!

  • edited December 2013

@Michael I'd suggest you start with a one or two bar drum loop where the hits are tightly quantized and there are some fills and variation in hits. Resist the temptation to do any warping! Do not drag across the waveform, just touch the wave to set the start point you want and touch the sequencer to insert an event where you'd like it to start. You'll find you can hack the loop apart pretty quickly rearranging it into multiple bars of variations.

It would be helpful if there was an overlay line for the 16ths but the start bar effectively creates a line where the loop will start and the loop has no predefined end, other than returning all the way to the start unless you interrupt it with another event. The start bar line can be used as a guide mark to line up any warping against to make sure you have the transient placed correctly. Zooming in however might be nice?

Once you get the basics you've still got warping, groove templates and all that automation, including effect automation, to explore . There's a lot of tools to make something out of very little :)

When warping avoid dragging on the wave form unless you're looking to create a special effect. Touch just in front of the waveform you want to move and drag it into position. Remember that you don't need to get it right first time. You can grab the handle and adjust, the key is getting the start point right. If there's warping to do get it all done before selecting any start points and putting events in the sequencer.

  • Can anyone advise as to the folder structure? The program seems ideal for my needs at first glance but I have a lot of samples, all categorised in folders. Can folders be created to keep em in? I use funbox on some programs which makes things easier.

  • @Shemloo yes, NXT works perfectly in this way.

  • If you import a zipped folder From iTunes it un zipped inside The app.

  • @Shemloo yes, NXT works perfectly in this way.

    Ban hammer on TY!!

I used iFunbox (any idevice file browser should do) to copy over a bunch of folders to the user samples area. With a file browser like iFunbox it's a lot easier to manage files and folders, move,em around after they've been copied to the app if needed, and so on. iTunes is very slow, clunky and way too simple with its file sharing section..

  • iTunes file sharing is the technological equivalent of Miley Cyrus.

Anyway, finally got some good quality time with NXT. Initial impressions confirmed that it's a powerhouse building on the original concept. Very nice indeed. I'm close to filling a screen with loops now, building a very nice tune if I may say so. I think it's going to work best for me going through Master FX into Cubasis, mixing up the tracks on the fly and then adding all the gubbins as usual.

I'm pleased to say I've managed to create some very subtle tones and effects in NXT that I haven't managed in other apps. The interface is perfect too - this is something other devs can learn from, I think. 2014 is going to be a mad year for innovation.

  • Hey guys
I own so many apps etc etc. I see so many apps appear with lots of hope and people sitting on the edge of their seats checking App Store every hour for an app. We all chat about it for a few days. And then it's on to the next one
What I want to know is -- in 5 months time do you see me still reguarding this in my top 5. Eg cubasis animoog dm1. Ones you always relie on.
I am happy to pay the money, but got a lot of other apps to master that I have got in the last few weeks.
Really want answer to be yes!
But want the best community ever to convince me as little videos on the web
    Thanks in. Advance
    P.s. bring on audiobus 2 !!!

  • edited December 2013

Another question (sorry!): On some of the synth presets, I can see evidence of automation for the FX. However, I cannot seem to recreate this myself - whatever movements I make on the XY pads is never memorised. Any ideas? Is an LFO 'target' going on, or am I missing an option?

  • Just double click almost any control and you will see the automation options. Enjoy!

  • So is there a manual for NXT and if not, why?? Maybe I should mail the developer.
Such a good app and no tuts no manuals, nothing.
