  • @Audiojunkie Ok, expanded sounds first it is! :) Not sure on timing yet though I'd hope by end of next month

@syrupcore I don't blame him for trying - it's a tough business and we do what we can to make ends meet. What's lame is that I reached out to him and he flat out denied it

  • Yay! Thanks Rhism!!! I'll be looking forward to the new sounds! Electric guitars, here I come! :-)

    --Sean

  • Somebody may be misusing keywords, but it did see a bump in your sales and kind of goes along with the idea being complementary and not competitive. But you're right, shouldn't be shirking the rules.

It makes me think of the Remaster app....they didn't waste time being sly with keywords...they just blatantly put Audiobus in their full app name. :)

  • @audiojunkie you can use midi out to control electric guitar sounds. So I think you'll get what you want sooner then u think.

  • @Ryan Yes and no - I made my midi engine as light and fast as programmatically possible but strumming a guitar over midi still doesn't sound as good as strumming inside the app. It's good for strumming other sounds (synths etc) but with a guitar I have an expectation of what it should sound like and it doesn't quite match that. So the expanded sounds IAP will be needed to get a true electric strum sound.

@SpookyZoo actually my revenue dropped significantly as soon as he started doing this. I'm all about collaboration but taking my app name without my permission, cutting into my revenue and then denying the whole thing... doesn't feel like a very friendly gesture. Remaster is a different story - this is more like if the JACK app had put Audiobus in its name. Now any time I invest in marketing to increase brand awareness for guitarism, he will take a cut of my increased sales at no expense to him. Not cool.

On a brighter note, guitarism Triple Play is currently "In Review" at Apple HQ! So with any luck this baby will be out today or tomorrow...

  • @rhism Meh, you're a bigger man than me; I blame him for trying. Bullshit black hat SEO, just on the app store. Obviously doing that is going to cut into your sales - that was his point. That he denied it when you reached out just completely blows.

Anyway, +1 for 'ends meet' and +2 for getting triple play into review!

  • @Rhism I just got an email! Oh snap! ;-)

  • Triple Play release imminent...

  • edited May 2013

guitarism v3.1 is live on the App Store with the following new features:

    1) In-App Purchase: guitarism "Triple Play"

    • Simultaneously play 3 additional instrument apps
    • Complementary roles: guitar, bass and chords
    • Configure channel, octave and velocity per role
    • Demo video and detailed help to get you going
    • Use with GarageBand or any MIDI-compatible app!

    2) Master volume control for playing with other apps!

    3) "Open In..." option to export recordings to DropBox, AudioShare and more

Two months ago, my 3-person band was playing a gig where we needed to sound like a 5-person band. I'd recently heard of this thing called Virtual MIDI (I didn't know about virtual midi until January 2013) so I hacked something up to play acoustic guitar on guitarism, plus Electric Bass and Synth Pad through TJ over MIDI. It worked really well, and thus Triple Play was born :) Thanks to @mgmg4871 for coming up with the name of this IAP. And look out for a cameo quote from @syrupcore in the help guide :)

  • @Rhism I completely understand. It's an underhand tactic and just not cool.

For some reason I thought I had read somewhere here that you had seen a bump in sales due to it.

    Checking out update now :)

  • Downloading update now. It's a shame I'm at work though, so I won't be able to play with it for a few more hours.

  • congrats!

  • Feels like I've been waiting forever for this!!! @Rhism good job man, everything you do is top notch

  • Fantastic update, @Rhism. Thank you for all of your hard work.

I just gave it a quick test through Bismark bs-16i and like it a lot. Amazing what kind of noise I can make now x 3 :-) .

A question regarding registration. What is the benefit? Will this affect restore purchases if I ever need to do so? I don't wastelook on FaceBook so I did not register and was just wondering.

    Thanks for your support.

  • @Keebo Thanks! The FB stuff is currently mainly for publishing recordings and videos to the guitarism community, but it also gives me a way of tracking purchases per user so e.g. if I ever make an Android version, I could transfer your IAPs there. I hope to add a non-FB way of registering in the future.

  • @Rhism. Better than I imagined. Awesome update. All you need now is an arpeggiator on the bass note output.

  • @mgmg4871 Agreed! Hope to add that at some point though I'd first need to create a mini sequencing engine (everything in guitarism is "live" right now). That said, I imagine you can do some pretty interesting things by running the chords output into an arp, and then running that arp out into other apps. But a built-in arp for bass would definitely rock.

  • What will be awesome is when we can bypass the effects slot in AB on desired inputs, so Jamup or Ampkit etc can be used solely for guitar.

  • Very nice @Rhism! Tried it with Animoog and had a blast with some of the sounds there coupled with guitar style picking and strumming. Your level of involvement here was part of the reason I didn't give a second thought to the IAP...that and the quality of your app.

  • Great update, @Rhism! Very well done.

Thanks guys! Also need to call out a few people:

@Ryan for making some awesome demo videos (many of which he's been waiting till now to share - Ryan you should go ahead and post those!) and in general testing the heck out of this thing. I don't have a ton of music apps but he definitely does, and his testing and videos and general knowledge about music apps helped me feel a lot more comfortable that the feature is ready for release, and worth charging for

@sonosaurus for beta testing and finding a pretty bad bug in my code as well as tips on how to improve polyphony for fast chord changes - which went straight into the help guide. And of course for making TJ which is my favorite companion app to use with this IAP (as you can probably tell from my video)

@Sebastian for some very insightful feedback he gave me on IAPs and MIDI. This guy is my guru (and I'm sure I'm not the only one)

  • @Michael_R_Grant I'd love to hear your feedback on the help guide (also in-app) as I really wrote that for people like you (and me) who understand guitars but don't know as much about the MIDI stuff. Though perhaps by now you are too knowledgeable about MIDI to really benefit from it :)

  • Wow! Midi out really rocks, made a quick video, bad screen but good sound. Guitarism with midi out + Animoog + Vogel CMI through Turnado into Multitrack on Audiobus.

This is a phenomenal IAP feature! Really brilliant use of MIDI and the standard guitar style layout. I could see some people getting really creative with this.

  • Thanks for the info, @Rhism. No disrespect for those who use FB or Twitter for commercial usage.

Your developing skills and real world application for this update is excellent. Very nice details for such a small price. I retract my earlier statement regarding MIDI in/out as standard after seeing your implementation.

I installed on my iPod Touch 4th gen a little later and restore purchases worked fine. I do feel sorry for those using any CPU hungry music app on said device including iPad 2 and mini users. Very slow loading when switching apps (not just Guitarism) but at least usable.

I don't like taking my iPad on my boat in case circumstances go awry but I was able to write some lyrics out on the water with my iPod. Guitarism worked very well to try out some chord progressions to fit the song.

As a guitarist, I usually compose on my guitar trying out various chords to find a suitable chord progression. Forgive me if this has been addressed earlier in this epic discussion, but is there any way to include more than 6 chords at one time? There is room on the iPad to show 12 but showing 12 on the iPod/iPhone would require smaller buttons/touch areas. The iPad has has arrows for 6 more chords left and 6 chords right but my iPod does not have these arrows. Perhaps I missed the option in settings.

I know the usual question is how many chords per song does anyone need. Not that many I agree. But for trying out different chords for composing, a real guitar has many possibilities and would find it extremely helpful if your app could get closer in regards to fret real estate (barring the typical size of the iDevice.

Thanks for listening to your customers and for being visible on this forum.

Good luck in your future endeavors as I am certainly interested in your way of developing.

  • Thanks @rhism! :-)

Here are a few more videos.

  • Nice video, @Ungifted. Thanks for sharing.

  • I had to pour one more drink while @Ryan's videos were spooling. Great job, man. This app is just getting better and better.

Quick question @Ryan, do you plan on updating the guitar images when @Rhism adds electric guitar sounds? I would guess yes and I look forward to what you come up with.

  • @ryan, that is amazing! Everyone go watch his arp test video NOW.

  • @Keebo I do believe update guitar "skins" are in future plans but also know Rhism tries to keep the app size minimal which is great so they have to find the balance between sexy and size...hahah

This is definitely not your average midi implementation and opens up so many possibilities, I can't wait to see what people come up with. Be sure to share your setups with everyone so we can all enjoy!

@Rhism & @Ryan stellar job, beyond all expectations as usual, the best gets better!
