  • @SpookyZoo Feel free to reach out with any more questions!

@Mayo @lukesleepwalker @eross I know I say it a lot, but I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the update and it's getting put to good use.

great update! love the strum feature.

2 things. Tonality crashes for me upon startup in standalone mode - not big deal as I use it 99.98% of the time in AUM as an AUv3. (iios 12.2 ipad 2018)

And one request - or maybe I'm missing something.... When strum mode is on, only the strum note pads seem to send midi out - and the square/rectangle chord pads do not send midi. Would it (is it?) be possible to have them both send midi out. Be nice to play a chord with the pad, then play one or two notes from the strummer while that chord is held down. (or even maybe send chord midi to one channel, strum midi to another?)

anyways, great app, just got better! thanks

@Halftone Are you on a beta by any chance? Crashing in standalone seems odd...
Currently the chord pads are what trigger the current chord in the strum bar when in strum mode, but I have plans to allow both simultaneously! Do you envision a particular method for this to work?

  • edited October 2020

@Halftone Never mind about the beta question... it looks like Apple silently changed an API between newer iOS versions and your 12.2 version, so that things which work and compile on new versions still compile and run on old versions but throw an exception at runtime, even though they shouldn't. Yikes. I've submitted a fix – sorry about that. I really want to support as many iOS versions as possible but things like this make it difficult.

That's a great idea. It's great just as it is but that would make it even better. Needs to be optional though please @TonalityApp

  • @charalew Definitely will be optional, likely either a setting in the menu or a top-level toggle/icon!

  • @TonalityApp . when using these apps in AUM .as an audio unit. i have the Aum keyboard sending notes to the chord and scale identifier. once i find the chords, or scale, can i do the drag n drop to the chordpads Au ? of send them to it? it looks like it is possible in the demo video ; but i can’t seem to figure it out.

  • edited October 2020

@eross Yup! To avoid conflicts with tapping on the piano, you have to hold down on the name of the chord.
You can also hold down on a chord pad and send notes directly to it, which will be identified and turned into a chord pad automatically.

  • Is it normal to have to delete the App after using the beta to download the update?

  • @Ailerom You shouldn't have to – what's it doing?

Unfortunately if it's not working the best I can do is try to troubleshoot with you; I have no control over the TestFlight process. I can push the latest build to TestFlight though. I don't want anyone to have to lose any data.

Whenever I beta test any app I have to delete the beta first before I can download the latest non beta version. I’ve always assumed that’s just the way it works.

  • @yowza Interesting, on all my test devices I've been able to install the release build over top of the beta version directly from the App Store.

In that case would love to see it as you could Strum faster that way

You don't need to delete the beta app for most apps. Just go to the App Store and visit the app's page and you should be able to re-download. That way you don't lose your data. If you delete the app first, you will lose your data.

  • How is everyone using this? Are the chords being sequenced? I have seen a lot of very interesting theoretical discussion but very little practical application. Is Tonality, you know, fun?

Mostly using like this: Make some chords - assign to pads - then assign midi notes to control the pads. Sequence chords/pads with Atom in AUM.

  • @ExAsperis99

Is a music theory textbook fun, or a Real Book, or a guitar chord bible? Unless you're like me, probably not. It's all a tool/reference to fit into a bigger end goal; applying that knowledge and creating good music. My goal here is to make that information a bit more interactive and accessible, especially while writing music. It may not be "fun" to figure out a guitar voicing or identify a chord/scale, but it sure is convenient when you're writing something and want some context.

That said, Tonality has evolved to include more performance tools. If you look back at the initial posts in this thread, I was reluctant to implement the chord pads as I was trying to maintain the "reference" theme I originally intended. Now the pads have become one of the most used features (and one of my favorites to work on). My personal (biased) opinion is that the strum bar and chord pads are pretty fun to play with, especially with velocity sensitivity and CC mappings turned on.

    Other opinions welcome :)

  • @WillieNegus Sometimes I feel like I need a disclaimer that I don't pay people to post here :D
Jokes aside, thanks for the kind words. Also, I understand this isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that's completely fine.

Exactly. Had to delete Tonality though.

    Strange. Worked fine for me.

  • No biggie, just thought it was weird. Never had this happen before.

  • edited October 2020

@Ailerom Yeah that's odd... wish I could do something about it. If it happens again let me know and I can try to find a workaround.

To any other beta testers: if you're trying to migrate to the release version be sure to search for Tonality in the App Store and download from there. The latest release probably won't show up in your updates section.

  • Fantastic app. I must be missing something here cause I cannot midi map the chords I choose on the pads to use with minilab on AUM.

Or maybe I'm tripping and it is not implemented yet?

  • @Vlad11

Tap the icon pictured above to enter MIDI learn mode. Then you can hold down on a pad and send a note on message to the AU to assign the trigger.
Let me know if you have other questions!

    Works great. Thanks 😊

  • @TonalityApp - I can’t seem to find the midi learn options in settings anymore..? I want to assign the chord pads to midi input notes like I’ve done in past. Was midi learn moved with the last update?

  • @Halftone yeah I moved it to the main page for easier access:

That icon toggles midi learn mode. You can also hold down the icon to remove all mappings.

    Perfect! That works even better

  • The “add an octave below“ feature has been super helpful for me. Especially when creating the specific chords and inversions I want on auv3 pads.

@Poppadocrock Great! Let me know if you (or anyone else) have more ideas to make editing pads more fluid
