Is a music theory textbook fun, or a Real Book, or a guitar chord bible? Unless you're like me, probably not. It's all a tool/reference to fit into a bigger end goal; applying that knowledge and creating good music. My goal here is to make that information a bit more interactive and accessible, especially while writing music. It may not be "fun" to figure out a guitar voicing or identify a chord/scale, but it sure is convenient when you're writing something and want some context.

That said, Tonality has evolved to include more performance tools. If you look back at the initial posts in this thread, I was reluctant to implement the chord pads as I was trying to maintain the "reference" theme I originally intended. Now the pads have become one of the most used features (and one of my favorites to work on). My personal (biased) opinion is that the strum bar and chord pads are pretty fun to play with, especially with velocity sensitivity and CC mappings turned on.

    Other opinions welcome :)

    More than fun. Totality indispensable

@Poppadocrock Great! Let me know if you (or anyone else) have more ideas to make editing pads more fluid

    Will do. Thanks.

  • Just a quick heads up: Tonality will be on sale ($3.99 USD) for Halloween!

Bargain at twice the price! Snap this up if you don't already have it. One of the essential apps. A theory reference tool and a playable musical instrument all rolled into one. Indispensable

Just hit the app store at the reduced price:

Automation/footpedal support coming soon! Let me know if you have any ideas for automation parameters other than the ones pictured in the video (global velocity and multiple navigation controls).

  • @Poppadocrock @charalew @Krupa (and other beta testers)

The automation parameters in the video from my last post should be available tomorrow. In the meantime, how would you feel about the chord/scale identification UI changing to match standalone (and allow guitar charts in AU)? The only issue I foresee (now that the guitar generation is fast enough to avoid being a CPU hog) is that it could make less chords visible in a vertically compact scenario (see the image attached). I think it looks better than the old stretched out version, but it also shows less chords per unit of height. Any ideas for compromises, or are most of you using it with a window size that's taller than it is wide anyway?

  • I will check this out today, just seen the notification for the update from TestFlight - I do normally use it in a taller window myself though :)

  • v8.2 is out! Major changes include:

    • Chord pad automation parameters
    • Grandstaff inversion detection
    • New guitar tunings, chords, and color schemes
    • Guitar results in AU
  • Woot! Nice update, thx.

  • Yeah it’s hard keeping up with the progress in this, thanks for the continued dedication!

Agreed. And getting better all the time.

  • @lukesleepwalker @Krupa @Poppadocrock
Thanks all! I might have a bit of a pause in the iOS updates so I can try to finish up the Android and Mac versions, but I have a lot more planned (and a whole new app in the works...)

  • @TonalityApp I love your app. So helpful in songwriting.

When generating pads using the function chords from scale would it be possible to limit the notes to a specific octave. It's not that big of a deal but I always have to modify it after generation.

I guess that's why we have preset save.

  • I don't know if I was clear but I would like all the chords to be generated within the same octave. That would mean some of the chords would have to be invertions.

Whole new app, eh? Any hints?

  • @ecou Thanks for the suggestion and clarification – added to my list. I’m also working on a quick voice leading tool that might help.

@lukesleepwalker There should be a little discussion somewhere in this thread but here’s a teaser of sorts

An Android version would be great! Is the latency issue sorted out enough to make it feasible now? I use iPads for tablets but have an Android phone (Galaxy Note) so would happily buy an Android version

  • @charalew It’s looking like it is for most devices! That said I’m likely going to port features over in waves with the chord pads near the end. I’ll probably release a (heavily discounted) version with just the chords/scales/guitar/circle of fifths and then slowly bring over other features like ear training and MIDI.

Nice, looking forward to that one!

  • Hello all! As you might have been able to tell from the v8.x releases, I've had a bit more time to work on Tonality lately. I'll of course still be active on this forum and respond to questions and requests, but I thought it might also be good to have a centralized location for dealing with iOS, Mac, and Android. I've made a mailing list for information about updates, betas, sales, etc. There's also a new tip jar section on the app settings page if you'd like to support my efforts. If I have time, I'm considering making a tutorial/video series explaining the new features in a bit more depth.

Thank you all for your support through the last year or so! It's definitely helped Tonality come as far as it has.

  • So finally got around to this app. Looked forever for “Tonality” in AUM as an AU. not showing up. The stand alone works when doing a search for tonality... so I reboot thinking I have an AU issue. Still can’t find tonality in AUM. But finally find it under different name??? Maybe discussed before why 2 different names for stand alone and AU? 😬

  • @onerez The different names (Chord & Scale Identification, Chord Pads, and Grand Staff) are there to distinguish between the three bundled audio units. Do they still show up in the list within AUM (i.e. the only issue is that you were searching for "Tonality")?

  • Yes, I had root canal today so I’m medicated..... so let’s just forget this and move on. 😂😂😂

  • @onerez All good. If it helps I can add a prefix so they show up as something like "Tonality: Chord Pads" in the list. Let me know if you have any other questions or issues.

  • Happy Thanksgiving! Tonality will be on sale until December 1. Here it is showing an excerpt from Vince Guaraldi's "Thanksgiving Theme".

  • Man, I bought this a long time ago, and was just browsing AUs I haven't used in a while and discovered the AU chord/scale identifier...this is so fantastic for learning and writing actual chord names.

Actually that would be a really good idea🙂

  • @oat_phipps Glad you’re finding it useful! I’ve made a ton of updates since then – you can even record and export chord names.

@charalew I’ll add it in the next release then. It actually used to be like that but I changed it for brevity. I assume you’d want this because it makes it easier to search?

It's more that there's another app (which thinking about it I don't actually use and so could just uninstall) called ChordPadX so sometimes I accidentally add the wrong app
