Hence the freeze function. And hence the large differences in how many gadgets each iPad model can handle (check Korgs comparison chart for Gadget).
Camels Mobile Alchemy synth is no different in that it runs multiple different synthesis engines under the hood for each instance of Alchemy, but the freezing of tracks here is taken care of automatically when switching between the 4 parts/instances available.
I think Korg did a good job with the RAM handling, loading and unloading graphic assets and so on when switching gadgets and views. Loading up a project with most gadgets in it, and lots of stuff going on in the sequencer, the Air is still stable which is quite a feat given that the Air and the current iOS is complete rubbish.
I don't know, Crabman, with Animoog, Moog proved to me that where there's a will, there's a way.
Besides, if that was Korg's route, they would have conditioned users to buying an IAP on release. They wouldn't wait to drop a store on users later, it would be part of their strategy from the beginning.
Doesn't bother me one way or the other, but I'm just getting my prediction in before whatever they drop.
Well Chris, I'd say that Korg created a system which wouldn't depend on freezing, especially on the two latest generation devices. I'm on ipad 4 so I have a very different experience with this app compared to those running ipad 2.
It doesn't seem on the latest devices they want to run multiple synth engines which automatically freeze. They seem to want to run as many unfrozen tracks as possible, hinting that is their philosophy to the app.
That said, if it is a single synth engine which allows "character" modifications, that doesn't mean that it isn't capable of doing anything we might want, since we really don't know what capabilities that engine has under the hood. We may not be seeing all of its features yet.
But I don't see them inserting freezing as part of the workflow for latest gen devices.
Also, Alchemy seems to be a different situation since they aren't running a user facing piano roll-based sequencer.
They don't need to worry about the ram bottle neck at all. The app works on all iPads with only limitation of how many gadgets one can use. I'm sure if they release an mpc style sampler gadget with user sample upload even those with ipad 1 will get it, it will only mean they won't be able to use many other things on top. It also depends what kind of stuff one does. If it's minimal techno you may get away with making complete tracks with fewer then four gadgets. With a winner sequencer like this and future AB/IAA support they know they can play it as they please.
@AQ808 nothing stopped Intua from introducing IAAs to Beatmaker 2.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Intua doesn't have a gigantic hardware business on the side, do they?
Korg may be enticed to give more to develop more good will for the branding of their hardware.
I personally think Moog took the wrong approach with charging for the multitrack recorder.
However, charging for the new presets made sense.
Applying the "cheerleading for IAP" thing to a very large multifaceted corporation like Korg doesn't really make any sense to me.
They are not going to put themselves in a situation which could damage the good will toward their brand with people railing that they just spent $40 for the app, and it should include everything, and that Korg is "evil and money-grubbing".
That's the type of stuff people get into over much cheaper apps.
Even Beatmaker 2 is not IAP for functionality, but rather sounds. I think they struck the balance Moog should have.
yeah!, don't "cheerlead" for IAP, if you're keen to spend money, just send Korg some of your money or donate to charity.
This assertion would lead me to believe they shouldn't charge for the app at all with some symbolic IAP price. They are in it for the money, they already have their recognized market share and name. Also they seem to be good at keeping in touch with current trends: volcas, kaoss pad etc. even if many of their hardware gadgets definitely have a prosumer feel to them (esp. built quality). I actually think they can see a lot of ferment in ios music and want to be where the electronic music is at rather then simply promo their hardware. To be honest I don't think these two approaches are conflicting anyway. Saying that I'm always totally gobsmacked to see people having to pay premium for branded t shirts when they are actually doing advertising job for the company.
They're not hinting at anything. The Air CPU is about 5x faster then the iPad 2 CPU (the comparison chart on Korgs site reflects this number too). The freeze is there to allow slower devices (iPad 2 & 3) to run more tracks/gadgets. It's also there to sell more copies, since a large audience will be using iPad 2 and 3. It is running various synthesis algos. How they packaged and put it all together, only the Korg dudes knows.
Alchemy could very well do away with the freezing on the latest A7 SOACs. It was put in place to allow slower devices (again iPad 2/3 and perhaps 4) to make use of the four available Alchemy instances and it's respective recording track.
IAP or not, I'm with you that I don't care either way. It wasn't necessary in their earlier apps (what would they sell?). But in this app I can definitely see Korg charging for new Gadgets, perhaps even preset packs in the future (I'd personally like that!). God knows they charged good money for the presets on their grooveboxes and workstations when I had some Korg stuff
Well, definitely keep in mind that Korg is a private company. They don't have to depend on zombie money-grubbing tactics to satiate zombie shareholder "demands" the way public companies do.
Whereas King.com Limited's zombie money-grubbing tactics are a perfect match for an IPO.
Private companies like Korg are more careful with managing their branding as a result, and typically give you more value for the price of their product.
Yea. And Korg gets that. Unlike, say, Yamaha, where the software/mobile division probably do a disservice to the other divisions within the company.
Dudes... Took the plunge and bought this phenomenal piece of kit...
One question, how do you automate volumes and other controls?
Or am I missing the point lol
Edit. Doh! It's easy I worked it out.. Sorry for the useless post
All posts are useless, some are just more useless than others ;-}
I think he meant to say "resistance is futile".
Well the moral of the story here is that Apple products don't really start to shine till they hit 4th gen... That being said I was on an iPad 1 and once audiobus hit well the 4 made sense.
Thanks PhilW and all for the advice on how to use gadget live at church. We usually do Chris Tomlin and Hillsong United type songs so i basically rely mostly on about 10 patches max. What i want to do is have maybe a couple of instances of the same gadget available with different patches setup to switch thru them easily live. That would work great. It has to be a one step process though for it to work. I'm planning to buy gadget tomorrow and try it, but i still dont own the cck. If i have an ipad air i would have to buy the usb to lighting cck adapter right?
Thanks in advance all for the warm welcome and help.
Shalom to all!!!
Ps by the way i love Korg as i have a Korg Trinity for the longest time... Outputs are not working but digital out is. So i mainly use it for controller at home. Some one mentioned that on of the gadgets sounds like a Korg Trinity is this true?
Just saw a tweet from KORG that mentions Gadget 1.0.2, and links to a page but all text is foreign to me. Anyone able to translate?

Google Translate:
We started the development of: "(Milpitas code name) KORG Gadget version 1.0.2." Be able to deliver in late February, will continue to develop intensive. It is not possible in this update, can be mounted all of the requests that I had, but it will over the long-term future, and then perform the update on an ongoing basis. Aiming Korg aim, the further ahead of "application that can be produced in mobile music in earnest"
Naturally it is in Japanese. Translation time.
We started the development of Gadget 1.0.2 recently. We will be able to push this update by late February (see Feb 23) and are working hard to meet this deadline. It is impossible to incorporate all the requests we received, due to the sheer number of them, but eventually they will all be added. We are planning to maintain and update this app on a regular basis. Korg is aiming to make Gadget "an application for serious mobile music production."
Maybe they have a lurker here....
There it is, excellent!
Great! Thanks for the proper translation. Good news I'd say.
awesome....keep ipad 2 in mind
Was just playing with rtpMIDI and Gadget, - playing the currently selected instrument wirelessly from a Fantom X8 via Cubase - seemed to work OK :-)
Actually if you scroll to the bottom of the web page you can choose your language.
@jangomango just hit record and tweak anything ;-)
"code name : Milpitas"? is that the name of the next gadget they add?
Maybe it is the name of the guy who is sitting in Korgs sweatshop coding the crap out of Gadget. Come on Milpitas!
Since Gadget’s release we’ve already received a lot of great feeback and requests from users. So, we’ve already started developing ”KORG Gadget version 1.0.2 (code name : Milpitas)”. At present, we’re aiming for a late February release.
Although we won’t be able to implement all the requests we’ve received so far into this update, we will continue to update Gadget step-by-step for a long time coming. So, be patient and we’ll do the best we can to fulfill your requests where possible!
Gadget will continue to evolve and grow as an app, with refinements and new functionalities still to come. We want to truly unlock the power of mobile music making with this app!
We’re aiming for serious functionality and plenty of fun, with a music app that’s truly optimized for iOS. Thank you again for your support of our mobile music production app, “KORG Gadget”. Milpitas is a city, located in California, so it might well turn out to be a new gadget.
total population 66,000. Not exactly London, Kiev, Tokyo, etc!
