It's not possible to load sample, maybe they will add this function later.

Rather than letting you load samples into Amsterdam I expect they'll roll out mpc clone as an iap purchase with that function.

Got a chance to play with Gadget over my lunch. It's not that any individual instrument is prouducing a sound you can't get elsewhere on iOS. It's that it's producing the broadest pallet of instant gratification, wrapped up in shiny little bundles, each providing a slightly different approach. All this without routing headaches and with a decent sequencer and automation package.

If you just want to run one App and have an inspiring environment to create something in without getting bogged down in options and technicalities I don't know that there's anything better on iOS at the moment.

....and it's got the nostalgia of the M1 Piano which should bring back a few memories for many on this forum.

  • If an iPad2 can only handle 5 tracks, it's not like adding AB would magically increase that. Though the possibility of audio tracks plus AB is pretty exciting.

For those in the UK. 99p store sells wire ipad stands with tightening nuts on both sides. They can be easily modified to accommodate ipad in portrait mode when using korg gadget with midi controller connected so the cck cable doesn't get trapped under the machine. I bought several of them already and they're good

If you want to spend a bit more money - I really like the iKlip stand. Did a review on the MusicInclusive website blog. It's solid and works well. Totally adjustable.

  • I just had a stab at this and it is easy after a bit of reading the manual. I would love a fe tutorials on the recording process.. How do I arrange scenes to play back in a song for example. I thought I had it figured out but unless I keep hitting scene arrows on playback the same scene keeps going. You can do a lot with this I can see for sure, I just need to learn a lot more.

  • Tritonman2 You have to turn looping off, or it will keep looping same scene.

  • Thanks for the midi info, I did get this as soon as I saw it, just havn't had a chance to use it yet, but I can see it's going to be s lot easier with a keyboard, and its looks and sounds brilliant, I'll do a review/demo as soon as possible.

  • Can't help it... here's another one. Man this sounds sweet!

  • That helped a bit mg. I have never used loopers much and the concept I get but the process I am getting confused in. tracks and scenes ect. I really hope someone does a tutorial on the whole process because even with my feeble attempts this does sound very good. I know what I want to do just not how to do it and make it all come together..

  • wait, if I make a drum track I copy to how many scenes I want it to go for and then when I want say a bass to com in I add it to that scene I want it to come in on and so on? how many scenes can I do?? Is there a limit?

  • Looks like a toy…nothing serious, I don't like an app that is like a game…

15 devices but all with limitates features

  • To some the Bavarian cheese whistle was a toy as well but who has the last laugh now I ask?

  • It's certainly not a toy.

Whether "less is more" in terms of the right synth for the right job is an interesting debate. In this case I think Korg have got it about right. With all functions able to be automated, usually including two effects, there's no shortage of options to mangle the sound. Choosing the right synth feels like a positive creative desicion then leaves you with a palate appropriate to the job at hand.

I love big complex synths to "play" with but sometimes simpler tools are better to achieve a desired effect quickly and a Gadget is about instant gratification!

Actually I am finding there's a lot of versatility in each module, and it certainly doesn't sound like a toy, however you think it may look.

This sure does not sound like a toy... Nice work especially for having the app for such little time..
The "limitates features" sound very good also.

By setting the regular price of Gadget at almost $40, you would think that there won't be any in-app purchases and every additional update would be free.

What Korg has done is the opposite of what Retronyms did with Tabletop's freemium model that gouges you with in-app purchases.

+1 on that. Bavarian cheese whistle sample library for all serious ipadians.

  • Yes and I am betting with a little effort you could produce an excellent Bavarian flute tone with the Miami wobble synth in fact.

  • I caved as well, too many nice sounds in there.

However I'm having a bit of trouble with lack of responsiveness. I find it very hard to play 16th notes in London while recording them, it chops up my beat. Anyone else experiencing this?

This in on an iPad Air, with standard latency. Setting latency to fast does not help.

Other than that, I'm loving the sounds and I think i'll have lots of fun with this. It's not on the cheap side but you really get an awesome lot of good sounding modules for that price, so in terms of bang for the buck, hard to beat.

  • By the way, there are several demo songs included, I found them all on Soundcloud here

  • I've just got used to NXT and Stroke Machine. I like NXT's sample manipulation and prefer Stroke machines synth abilities.
I'm glad I didn't get Caustic 3 and got Gadget instead I love the korg sound.
Just hoping there are fewer bugs in Gadget than the other two !

Just wanted to make people aware of the current MIDI implementation limitations, as they are legion. First of all, it doesn't have virtual midi ports, instead it promiscuously listens to all other hardware and virtual midi ports of other running apps, in Omni mode, with no way to change anything or even disable midi, AFAICT. Secondly, no pitch bend support of any kind. No CC support (even mod wheel), AFAICT. No MIDI sync.

Let's hope that all of the above improves over time, and those of us who care should let them know about it through the proper channels.

But it does sound good ;)

  • Yes it does sound great, I could not agree more and to think this is only version 1. A lot to look forward to as you pointed out. We should have a super ios music making year in store for sure. I had not even tried my mod wheel on the carbon 49 yet but with so much automation I can live with that until a future version with no problem. I can not wait to see where this goes but will busy for some time exploring all that is here already/

  • @Peter321 I noticed timing issues when trying to play faster parts too, so you are not alone (although I am on a humble iPad2). Big issue if that is the case regarding pitch bend and mod. I also find the 8 bar limit on each part does not fit well with how I tend to record. But as you say, great sounds, I hope these issues can be resolved in updates.

  • London input issues here too. Fast latency, ipad air.

  • Same issue here too, on iPad4. It's really quite annoying, it makes me really doubt on my playing
and I have the same issue with the polysix app too, using the step sequencer by playing on the screen keyboard, it always seems to place some of the notes on the next step.
Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just the way the sequencers / quantizing algorithm is laid out and I'm not timed the same way (I actually seem to remember having a similar issue with iMS20 too)

  • Here is an example of someone using his qunexus to midi control Korg's Gadget..

  • @mtyas no, not noticed this using iPad Air. Turning off quantize might help.

  • Hey! so, what are all these based on or inspired by. I'm not very knowledgeable on synths but I'd like to be. I'm guessing Dublin is like a Moog type of thing. I'm loving the sound of Berlin, I am guessing its based on the Arp Odyssey just because of the sliders, Phoenix kinda looks like a Polysix to me and Chicago is a 303 obvoiusly. I'm really interested in knowing what Kiev and Chiangmai are based on or inspired by and also what all those city names mean exactly. Please don't judge if my guesses are way of, synths, especially the vintage ones are a new found interest for me thanks to those iOS music making apps. I am not a real musician, I just really like to play with sounds and I'd just like to get a little nerdy up in here!

Nothing new for sure…..all synth are recreation of old stuff with less features of originals…

    Personally I don't like…and …too much money for a game

    but all tastes are tastes

    I'm just honest :-)
