  • Having not used this in ages because I wasn't that keen on it, I decided to give it another whirl after seeing it rise to the top of the threads here. But I can't get it to play through my bluetooth speakers, which is just another reminder, I suppose, of why I ditched it in the first place. Anyone got any ideas about this, or it is a known issue?

Good thing about Zenbeats is the fact that you can use
it to build songs on a linear sequencer type of workflow...or if you like triggering patterns in a spontaneous way/ or a live performance you can do that too. A really nice feature is the scale keyboard you can set in your melodical lines...also directly to your midi keyboard.
Maybe Modstep can do same things ( Im not sure ) or Gadget? not sure on that one either.
Now its sound library is really cool ( at least for my taste ).And of course you can use auv3s . Exports are really flexible too. Sampler inside ( basic functions though ) Again, personally, i don't use audio tracks on ios...or sampling either.
Automation is a killer ( even though i would like to record automation on auv3s through my midi controller) I still don't know if it's possible.
Im curious if anyone knows one thing that Zenbeats cannot do and in regard to other grooveboxes.

Many realtime audio apps (for good reason) don't play via Bluetooth audio. Bluetooth audio has a high amount of latency (except in circumstances where the sending device and receiving device are natively using the same compression algorithm for all their buffers). This is because Bluetooth uses lossy compression algorithms that require large buffers due to the CPU load in compressing the audio.

What most people don't realize is that when you send audio via Bluetooth audio, you are not sending the raw audio to the Bluetooth device. Bluetooth because of its limited bitrate can't handle uncompressed video and audio streams. So, when you send audio to Bluetooth, that audio has to in pseudo-realtime be transcoded from the raw audio to a compressed format. Audio and video data compression are computationally intensive and the whole system causes really high latency. So, some apps where timing is critical have chosen not to support bluetooth audio because of concerns about the user experience.

@All Forgive me for not being a champ and reading through this impressive/exhaustive collection, but I just received an email encouraging me to switch to Zenbeats before the end of the month. I never did use Stagelight much, but is the consensus that this new 'version' is useful/good/being worked on by the Roland folks? Not looking for trouble, just wondering if folks feel it's worth diving in at this point or maybe hold off for a bit etc? Insight welcome.

Yes. Get it wether you plan to use it now or not. Totally worth it ... which is easy to say since it will cost you nothing.

    Thank you.

Hi @JohnnyGoodyear To add to @wim comments, and to answer your question on development, the same development team that made Stagelight (myself included) are now a part of Roland and working on Zenbeats. Since it's release in September, we have put out 5 updates addressing issues while adding/enhancing features... and we are just getting started! :-)

I can't speak for you if it will be worth it or not, but you have nothing to lose in getting it for free. If you do opt to try it and not like it, I'd love to hear from you on how we can make it better.

    Cheers!

Hello Matthew: Thanks for the response. I have indeed downloaded, updated, transferred etc. A prospect which intimidated me a tad but which was swimmingly easy.

I will give you/it a run for the money (especially as it appears my doppleganger bought a fair amount of Stagelight stuff without me knowing/remembering :). Can you recommend your favorite video demo/guide/encourager?

    Good luck with future work/updates.

Not good at all, frankly. I use an iPad Pro 2018, and for this reason it's often very handy to use Bluetooth when composing (i.e. to prevent messing about with dongles and whatnot). Well, never mind - I just bought the unlock because, hey, this app seems a lot better than last I used it. It says it supports midi tracks but I can't find anyway to, for example, use Rosetta Rhythm to generate a drum pattern. Any idea on how this can be done, if it can be done at all? I hope so because I'm liking what I see thus far, and this app looks like it might be really good for doing live stuff. Thanks, @espiegel123. It's a pity about the 'no bluetooth' situation, but I suppose I can live with it.

    • Load up either an instrument or drum track.
    • Expand the track settings by pressing the ">" at the left, below the track list, or above the piano roll or drums.
    • Get to the Plugin's by touching the "Plug" icon
    • Long-press the Plugin on the track and you'll get a popup for "+ MIDI Effect"
    • Add Rozeta and set up the key map to trigger what you want. For Zenbeats drum tracks, the Gadget map is a good place to start.

I think, like with too many apps, you have to jump through hoops to record the midi output. If you want to do that then it might just be easier to host Rozeta outside and feed the midi into Zenbeats.

It's pretty good, you know. I thought it could record midi (e.g. from Rosetta) but I've not found a way to do that yet. But this looks like a very good project, I have to say. The automation seems to be slow to get into gear, and it sometimes seems to not work (from the little mess about I've had so far with it, this seems to be the case), but it's really good fun and definitely one to watch. Looking forward to getting a full track in it and playing it live.

I don't suppose you have any idea about how to make Zenbeats not crash when recognising AU plugins, do you?! I remember this problem when I first downloaded it ages ago. I had to rescan because it wouldn't find Rosetta. It's now found Rosetta but nearly all of my AUs are now not recognised, and every time I do a scan the app crashes. I've restarted my iPad but it's still doing it. Anyone else have any idea? It's a promising app but there's clearly still much to do. I couldn't get it to record the midi from Rosetta, too, which is a bit of a shame, but I'll try doing it by using Rosetta standalone, if I can get my AUs back somehow, that is (!). Thanks.

Are you sure you're on the latest update? [edit] nvm Still happens on the newer version. They say they've fixed some things on the scanning. The last time I had problems scanning, it would continually crash at the same plugin. Then I tried a Scan For New instead, and eventually got it to finish. That was on the previous version.

[edit] I just tried it with the latest version, and Scan For New seems to be the best option. I can get it to complete eventually, after at least a couple of retries, with that.

Nothing gets dumped into the new Quarantined Plugins section, so it's a puzzle. Weirdly, Atom Piano Roll doesn't show up ever.

I wonder what it is that they're doing so differently from other hosts that makes this scanning thing necessary and so problem prone? @MatthewAtZenbeats any insight? This is unique to Stagelight / Zenbeats on iOS as far as I know.

Plugin Scanning should be better now but there is still room for improvement on all platforms. The Quarantined list is mainly for mac and windows, as they are less standardized than iOS. We'll keep improving on this.

    Thanks for the response. B)

I love Zenbeats, and am used to the plugin scanning thing. I think it's potentially a really big confidence killer for some people though, so for the success of the app, I hope it can be better adapted to iOS, or mostly bypassed, other than maybe to scan for preset names. That seems to be how other hosts do it.

I know on the desktop side loading each plugin as part of the scan is common, but I don't think it's common practice on iOS. Usually scanning for new plugins is automatic, foolproof, and unnoticeable. Apps seem to only be looking for declared preset name. But I'm not a developer and can't say that for sure.

@MatthewAtZenbeats , is it possible to record midi from the likes of Rosetta? If so, how?

  • @MatthewAtZenbeats I'm having a few issues with the app, in addition to the above (midi effects can't be recorded). 1) As well as midi effects not recording, I've not found a way to use other crucial midi effects, such as midiLFOs. Is this possible in Zenbeats? 2) Is there an issue with automation? I've tried several times to use it. Sometimes it will work once, then not work again. Other times, it doesn't work at all. It doesn't seem to work properly, essentially, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something. 3) Is it possible to rearrange the audio effects, e.g. move an EQ AU so that it's prior to, say, a distortion plugin, or vice versa? It seems like a really promising app from what I've used of it, but either I'm doing something wrong or the app has a few issues that need sorting. Many thanks.

  • @audio_DT

@MatthewAtZenbeats , is it possible to record midi from the likes of Rosetta? If so, how?

    1) Not yet, but that is a planned feature. What MIDI LFO Tool are you trying to use? I'd like to test it and see. Theoretically it should pass control the instrument but you;d have to use MIDI learn feature to map it to the parameter you want.

    2) Automation is limited to track parameters and some plugin parameters. If you;re trying automate a plugin, try switching to the parameter view first.

    3) Yep, just drag and drop audio effects up or down and they will rearrange.

  • Hey @MatthewAtZenbeats Still using Zenbeats, still impressed with it after a year. For me, having clip creator/launching plus linear with full MPE and native Roli compatibility is great.

I’d love to see more midi mapped controllers supported. Example, Novations new Launchkey Mini MK3 is an amazing out of the box controller for Live and Logic but also iOS apps like GrooveBox, GarageBand, Cubasis, and BM3 . It would be a perfect companion for Zenbeats. Also, please expand Roli integration to allow Loop/Live/Lightpad blocks to launch clips, control mix view.

Many of us are not good with Keyboard and do type in the notes manually.
Now imagine how long it would take to create a good melody, if every single note you type in, you have to wait for the loop to start all over and get to that section you just added notes to🤣🤣

Please make it possible to use the playhead freely in both timeline and Piano roll.
    This is my first try.

Well, if it’s only your first try... you are a genius.. Nice..

Would be interesting to see what Roland brings to the table.. with the introduction of those new Groove boxes..

Having a hard time importing midi into ‘a drum-track’, sometimes it works but most time it don’t..

    Nice DAW..

Hi there that’s for the feedback
I forgot to mention that too about the midi.
If you want to import, you have to tap on menu, then song, then import, and choose midi.
It will open up files app.choose your midi.
When it imports, it might create 2 tracks (I don’t know why), one empty and one with your midi.
Just drag the one with your midi onto your desired track and delet the new ones.
    It’s long I know 🤣🤣

The Song import seems to work ok.. but trying to import midi into a ‘drum-track’ seems to be a problem.. maybe it’s me..

This shows up after a long press sometimes... and sometimes it imports the midi, sometimes not..

Ok.. think I have it figured out.. It does not import into the first ‘cell’ on the timeline, but other cells it can.. and the usual stuff with ‘midi file format 0 and 1’ import issues (as with BM3)..

Edit.. But once imported.. it is perfect.. Notice the repeats from Future Drummer.. Nice..

Hi Mathew. One 1) I use midiLFOs. I can't get it to work, unfortunately. Is there a manual somewhere? I've not been able to find one unfortunately. As for the 2) I've been able to get it working intermittently. Will try again later on. As for 3) great! I'll give this a try later on, too.

I can say that for BM3, GarageBand, GrooveBox, Ableton and Logic it is pretty damn amazing. The onboard arp, deviate, mutate and fixed chord features are worth the price of admission alone.

Been. A while.. but I got it going again.. Seem there is a midi file format issue with the import.. but files exported from Xequence imports well..

Particularly Novation controllers which have controls to support clip launching apps (Ableton, launchpad for iOS). It would be great to be able to control Zenbeats clips via midi.

I raised this question several times with no answer.

    Hey @WillieNegus

Sorry I missed the earlier posts/questions on this. Better hardware integration/enhanced MIDI Learn support are high on the request list from other customers too. Beside clip/song part launching, what other types features are you looking to map to?

  • I see new comments then I open AppStore link to see it’s still not available (
