I'm intrigued by this app but haven't bought it yet. It looks like an expanded version of the dev's Chordflow, which I have. I'd buy this in a heartbeat if it was midi AU because it would enable me to use it in AUM and insert midiLFOs and other midi effects units, etc. to create more variation. Is this planned, @Dmitry_Klochkov?

For now I don't have plans to make TM to be able to act as a AU MIDI plugin. But I agree that this would be a really awesome feature. So I definitely will investigate this opportunity but could not guarantee it will be implemented in the near future.

  • Very cool. I haven’t had the cash as of lately to purchase Tune Maker so I’m super happy right now. Thank you so much man. Awesome.

  • @Dmitry_Klochkov i know Ableton Link isn't implemented yet but is it on the roadmap ? just curious.

I don’t fully get the relationship between Tune Maker and Chordflow. They seem to be very similar. Anybody know what the intended use cases are for either app?

Tune Maker is a successor of ChordFlow in a way and the apps overlap in functionality in many ways. Firstly it was supposed to add all the changes to the ChordFlow, but it is turned out that there are too many changes. So it made more sense to me to make it a separate app.

Ah, thanks for clarifying! Spent hours with TM last night, I’m enjoying it so much!!

  • I’m getting into this too, wondering if I need chordflow as well in order to get the theory side a bit more?

Also, I noticed a fair battery drain if I don't manually swipe close the app (I do have background audio turned off)

    Cheers

Yes, if you need to play full chords, you can create a simple pattern and repeat it using the loop event feature. Like this:

Will check that. Thanks for letting me know.

Yes, I have it in my todo. Will be added in the upcoming updates.

I also just noticed this happening as well. Battery usage shows constant background operation for Tune Maker unless it’s manually force quit.

  • I stand corrected, I’m seeing battery drain even though I had force quit the app earlier.

  • I definitely had it from the app overnight on Saturday, checked the drain thing in the settings...

Thanks for your reply, and for your honesty, too. I'll hold off on this one but will buy it in the blink of an eye if you ever make it AU

Ah thanx.. I get it now, cool app!! I like it!

From the manual and app description it isn’t very clear that a song section consists of 16 tracks + chord track in total. At first I tought that you only had 4 tracks + chord track... But you can use 4 melody tracks + 4 arpeggio tracks + 4 bass tracks + 4 drum tracks at the same time! And each track can have a different preset/drum-kit…. Nice!

It would be nice if the active track window would also show the preset for that track: 'Arpeggio 1 - Synth bass', 'Drums 1 - TR-808' , 'Melody 1 - Alto Sax' etc. Makes it easier to remember what sound you chose....

Glad you liked it. BTW, there aren't separate bass tracks, only arpeggio tracks. The lowest notes in the arpeggio event editor grid are used for bass notes. So in total we have 12 tracks + the chord track.

    I'm sorry, you're right :-)
But I use 1 arpeggio track for bass notes, and put my chords in another arpeggio track..

    I got 3 more questions:
    1. Can you add the preset name to the track name? Instead of Arpeggio 1' or 'Drums 1' I would like to have 'Arpeggio 1 - Alto Sax' or 'Drums 1 - TR-808'.
    2. Can't I use 1/2 or 1/4 grid for the chord track? Right now I can only choose 1 chord for a whole bar..
    3. Can you add a preview function when browsing presets?

    1. I also thought about that. I will try and check if it will look ok.
    2. I did not want to render the current note grid into the chord track because chord events are most of the time fill up the whole bar. You can resize the chord event the same way you resize a note event. Just drug it by the right end.
    3. Can you elaborate a little more on this one? What do you mean by presets here?
  • Here is how you resize a chord event:

Okay great, I didn't know you could resize the chord events too... :)

By 'Can you add a preview function when browsing presets' I meant that when you are in the mixer page and are browsing for a sound to choose, it would be nice if you can actually hear that sound before selecting it.

But when I think about it... it aint that necessary... it works just fine at the moment..

  • You can just switch between presets while the sequencer is playing.

Just released an update that addresses this issue.

  • I got this app today based on a passing comment by @CapnWillie in the Scaler 2 thread https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/49040/scaler-2-2022-gamechangier-on-ipad-os#latest

If you have not come across it then this is a powerful app which has a lot of lovely touches that I have not seen in other apps. Here are a few of the highlights from just spending the last 30 mins with it:

    • Each song section can be in a different time signature (1-16 over 1,2,4,8,16), different scale/key and between 1 and 16 bars in length.
    • Song sections can be cloned or repeated (think NS2/X2 linked clips, something of a rarity in iOS sequencers)
    • Decent piano roll
    • Up to 4 piano roll “melody” lanes per section which are displayed simultaneously for easy arrangement.
    • This is a biggie for me and is something I have always wanted to see in piano rolls - you can select a key for the piano roll and select one or more notes and then make them flat or sharp (i.e. outside of the selected piano roll key). This essentially lets you treat the piano roll like a musical staff.
    • Another useful thing that I wish more sequencers would do is the ability to limit the range of notes in the piano roll, e.g. between C3 and C5.
    • Ability to clone notes within a section and you can also have multiple of these, e.g. clone bar 1 of the 8 bar section for 3 bars then clone bar 4 for 4 bars. Great for quickly creating drum sections.
    • Optional quantized MIDI recording.
    • Continuous recording - start recording then overdub/undo and switch parts without stopping the playhead.
    • MIDI export
    • AU host so you can use your own apps instead of the built-in sounds.
    • MIDI out to other apps

I haven’t even started digging in to one of its biggest features which is the chord progression / arpeggiating mode.

    Here is the manual:

    https://tunemaker.app/manual/docs/about.html

  • I love this one and Chordflow (from the same dev)
It's one of those that baffles me why there aren't more people hooked on it

  • I remember downloading it, thinking it seemed cool and then never using it for some reason. I have no idea why as it seems ideally suited to my workflow. It even hosts AU3.

  • It's too good of an app to fly so low under the radar, that is for sure. You know how there are some bands that have great musicians and good songs but never seem to get that one big hit? This app feels like that band to me. It's really good at what it does but it doesn't have that ONE BIG HOOK. At least to me.

    Here is the manual:

    https://tunemaker.app/manual/docs/about.html

Took a punt on this and pretty impressed, but I can't see a way of hosting AUs - the manual shows 'AU extension' as an instrument choice in the mixer - on my iPad I'm only seeing 'None, Internal Synth, MIDI out' as instruments. Has this feature been removed in an update or am I missing something obvious...?

  • Works great for me. Just tap on the mixer icon in top right. Tap the instrument name, AU is the last instrument to the right. Select whatever AUv3 and go. Only thing that doesn’t work is the internal AUv3 preset browser. You have to tap the show plugin button to see the AU and select the preset from within the plugin. I’m astonished it works so well but there are frequent crashes so save your work often folks!

Thanks @CapnWillie - all good now - needed a reinstall for some reason...

  • Would you recommend people get Tune Maker instead of Chordflow? Anything that's missing in the former that is in Chordflow?

The dev actually lists the feature comparison on page 2 of this thread I believe. I’m just now finding out about them. About to buy I think.

  • I have not but I noticed about a month ago, he removed Clawtar, an older midi controller app for iPad from the US App Store.
