So, as I mentioned in another thread here yesterday, Shockwave has been a great rediscovery for me as tool for experimental sounds and I especially love the note generator functions.

One question (and I’ll @skiphunt here as you seem to be the expert on this) is this: Why no ‘amp mode’ pot in the AU version? Is there another way in the AU to achieve the kind of effects this knob controls in the standalone version?

I REALLY wish this had a manual. None of the YouTube videos I have seen so far are explaining sufficiently some of the more left field stuff this synth is capable of. Sure, there is a lot to be learnt by trying to figure it out yourself, but there is a lot to be said for a good manual too... I fully agree with Wim’s earlier comment that playing the presets on this don’t do much for me, it’s definitely one that is worth learning well to design your own stuff. Would be nice if it were easier to learn how to do that.

Edit: I will say this: the reverb and delay on this are phenomenally good. Bloody loving this thing!!

  • Above problem is solved, I have found where it is in the AUv3

Sorry! Just saw this... been taking a little breaks for the forum ;)

I'm definitely no "expert" with Shockwave. Just a fan.

I will say that I personally prefer to use it mostly in standalone mode. I make my patch there.... then use the AU version after I'm finished getting a patch I'm happy with.

Anyone having an issue where when loading shockwave in aum as an auv3, it just maxes out at 103% or other times it’s 98% power consumption and no sounds coming from it. Tried with iaa and the app (shockwave) would just disconnect from aum. And the only way it works and makes sounds is standalone..I’m on 13.4.1 10.5 iPad Pro. This after I’ve restarted iPad numerous times

    Edit: solved.
Looks like buffer size of 2048 was causing it. 1024 fixed it.

Can shockwave be loaded as a music effect AU in Aum? I recently learned that Volt synth can be used this way, so before I hit the 'buy' button, I'd like to know if ShockWave can also

  • edited April 2020

    @aleyas nope, it can't

    Edit: wait, MIDI or Audio?

absolutely can be loaded as a synth

  • No, it can't @aleyas. By the way u seem to know your stuff, so when u get this, please do a tutorial on using the generative aspects of it and the utility section. It's very cool but a bit beyond me still, lol 😂

I always wanted to re-build the Shockwave core in Drambo, one of my first plans that got distracted by so many other activities.
A lower cpu and higher polyphony alternative, so to say.
I wouldn't want to do everything by myself though.

  • Would be great, would love a polyphonic version

Nah, just duplicate 2-3 tracks of it and watch your device melt.

A new dimension just opened up! 😎

  • I don't have a great deal of experience with generative programming on iOS, but I'll see what I can do! Btw, I'm still planning on making that FRMS tutorial, just give me another day or two

  • I think I got it already though, it's just that there is still this problem with the 3rd gen iPad Pro. Apart from that, I know how to use the live input now

  • Awesome! I'd still like to make a granular tutorial just to give some workflow ideas and interesting applications. I'll probably use a few different apps.

  • Sounds excellent, looking forward to it

  • Hello everybody,

I bought Shockwave 3 days ago and am very pleased with the sounds I can produce. I have had difficulties to understand how sounds are generated because there is no user manual provided with it but I think I got the main features. Still haven't explored the sequencer part yet...

At this stage, I noticed 2 "big" issues and I must admit I am very surprised that nobody reported them :

    1. After 5 minutes of idling (app in background or foreground), the synth starts to create a sound, like a drone, first very lightly then increasing in volume until it all distorts. You can then only change the current preset to stop it.
    2. Glide and slide features are not working, unless you do a portamento from another note : for example, play a C3, hold it, play another note (release this note) and only then you can glide and slide your C3 ! Is it me who is missing something ? As there is no manual, I am still doubting but I think it should not behave like this and we could glide/slide as soon as we play the first note (C3 in my example).

What do you think about it ? Did you experienced the same issues ? Thanks for your feedback !

PS : tested on iPad mini 2 (iOS 12.4.6) and iPhone Xs (iOS 13.4.1)
PS2 : putting the developper @ka010 in the loop may help ;-)

Hi Paulo, glide and slide both work, what keyboard are you using to try to trigger them? Is it an MPE keyboard and have you enabled MPE in shockwave itself?

About the patch starting to play itself, is it maybe one of the self generating patches?

I agree by the way, this needs a manual, the in-app help is insufficient
    @Paulo164

  • Hi @Gavinski,

Thanks a lot for your answer.
I am using the in-app keyboard. I also tried with the Geoshred keyboard (just to make sure it was not a display issue but somehow a "inner" issue in the MPE handling) and the result is the same. Could you please confirm me that when you hit just one note and glide, the pitch is changing ? Because it is not the case on my side, unless I do the trick I mentioned before.

Regarding the patch starting itself, it is one created by myself from the "init" template, very simple, without auto-trigger events or things like that.

At first, I didn't understand what was going on I thought really I was crazy !! It tooks 24 hours to admit maybe the issue was real  Please, tell me I am not alone :cold_sweat:

  • I can definitely hit one note and glide no problem! I just tried in-app, no problem. U need to select MPE in the app settings. And above the keyboard, u need to enable glide, slide, velocity.

I've been actually having the same issues both with the included keyboard and with my Linnstrument. No gliding, no response to pressure.

I haven't noticed the drone sound.

  • @Gavinski ,
Thank you very much. I already checked these options but to no avail. Attached is the screen capture of the issue (Glide_slide_issue.mov) showing the clumsy workaround I need to do :

    @Monome ,
Thank you. Finally, did you get rid of the glide/slide issue ?
Attached is the screen capture of the drone sound starting after 5 minutes idling (Weird_drone.mov) :

@Paulo164 I didn't get rid of it. As you, I have also just purchased it, played with it a couple of times. At first I thought it was me. Yesterday I was trying other things and not too focused on that issue. I will check again in a few days. Maybe @ka010 will look at it in the meantime.

Now with Logic's new update I'm going to be busy on my Mac I guess ;-)

  • I have had the problem with the drone as well. It was from the Init patch. Standalone mode. Sequencer was not engaged. Ipad Pro 10.5, iOS 13.4 (I think) . As you state - it increased in volume until distorting. It kinda caught me off guard, as I had the app minimized and was doing something else.

  • @Crawlingwind , thank you very much.
Could you tell whether the issue is still present or not on your iPad ? If you find some time to spend, you just have to open ShockWave, set a preset like "init" and wait 5 minutes. You can switch app if needed. It should give the answer :-)
    Thanks again !

  • I won't be around my iPad until later tonight, but I will try it again.

  • @Paulo164 I’ve done a quick test with the on board keyboard. There is no glide or slide when note priority is set to last. The other two modes seem to work. I would say it was the same problem yesterday with my Linnstrument.

This was on a iPad 6th gen. iOS 13.4.1. Tested in stand alone mode. @ka010

I’m wondering what it would take to add polyphony to this thing? It sounds really really good and the long press issue has been addressed.

  • I’ve had it open with init patch and cannot reproduce the issue with the drone sound.
