  • App Size is 'back to normal' for the latest update :)
Apparently it was a glitch or something...
(Back to 5-stars on the AppStore).

  • I have to say, to anyone who is considering the SWAM instruments, if you are able to buy them then go for it. They are, in my opinion, incredible. Thankfully I play guitar and so the layout makes sense and I can noodle away. My old boss in a guitar shop once helped me to buy an expensive guitar by telling me that when you hand a large amount of money over you feel sick but the sick feeling passes while the guitar remains with you. Within 10 minutes of playing the instruments I know they will improve my recordings and also improve how I think musically, allowing me to move away from thinking of guitar, harp and piano licks into considering the approach of the flautist, clarinetist etc...

Sorry @Samu but wasn’t your reaction a bit... exaggerated ?? Come on, it was only an update to add free content that went wrong 😅

Somedays I wake up on the wrong foot and that can happen to anyone.
But it's fixed now and that is what really matters...
(I know I was not the only one reacting to the 'storage glitch')

Time to catch some sleep now, hope I don't wake up to an iPad that is 'full' in the morning again :D

  • Folks,

Some thoughts. We fubbed duck with GeoShred 5.870.1. We upgraded to the latest xcode and for some reason assets that are not supposed to be part of the build were checked boxed to be included. So yes, the package size bloated from 167MB to 973MB. We addressed this in 5.872.1 which was released within 24 hours of learning about the problem. Note that this has nothing to do with backing tracks or the GeoJamTrax which we will share with everyone next week. Backing tracks are tiny.

Also with regard to background audio. It has always been set to be on by default. Background audio can be turned off from "Menu> Settings> Audio". We were on the fence about background audio on by default. We polled the user base and found almost unanimous support for it being on by default.

Finally, I'm not sure why we did not get Samu's email. I've searched all the mail boxes including spam and junk. If you want to reach out to us, [email protected] is the contact. We respond within 12 hours, usually 1 hour.

Ok, so now about moForte. We are really small. Just 2 developers and we do every thing soup to nuts. Jordan Rudess is the publisher and much of his work is around how to create music with GeoShred and new Ideas. GeoShred is really the sum of 30 years of work emerging from Stanford/CCRMA and is a testament to Dr. Julius Smith's work on Physical Modeling as well as Jordan's ideas about how musical instruments on multi-touch surfaces should work. Also the GeoSWAM models are the amazing work of Audio Modeling. Many of GeoShred's users are in India (30%) because the fluidity of play and support for microtonal music is a great match for Carnatic and Hindustani music. If you want to know about the history of Physical Modeling we have a deck here:

Hey Pat, thanks for the response.

My problems with background audio were:

    1. I like it off so I set it to off, but every update to new version had reset it back to on.
    2. When it’s on, it draining my battery faster and I won’t even know about it for some time until I check my settings app and see.. “whow, why is GS taking so much battery, didn’t even use it recently! Oh background audio”.

Either way, thank you for the update , it’s appreciated.

  • @moForte Thanks for the explanation Pat. I do appreciate this openness with the community, it is a differentiator when companies engage in this way.

The background audio setting should not get reset when doing an update. I've added this to our task list to look at and resolve in an upcoming release.

Our process is that we have a google sheet that tracks all customer reports as well as new feature development. Tasks are classified by bug/feature, priority. We meet daily to determine what should go into upcoming releases (essentially scrum in the context of our tiny team).

Sending us a note ( [email protected] ) about problems that you find is the most effective way to get them into the task list so that they can be recorded, and queued for resolution.

    Thanks,

    Hey Pat,

Thank you very much for your response. This is the only issue I've encountered with the recent GS updates. Other than this it's been a pretty smooth ride overall.

  • update fixes the app size, and also keeps the JamTrax :) win, win :) thanks team GeoShred

  • GeoCello is on sale. 33% off.

    Dear God,

This issue has been fixed in GeoShred 5.890.1. Note that the problem was that the setting for background audio was not being saved in earlier releases. It is now being saved and will persist across updates. However because it's not saved in earlier versions you will need to restore the background audio setting once you install 5.8901. and then it will persist moving forward with new updates.

Application Note #34: Using GeoShred to Control iOS SWAM Apps

We have been getting a number of question about how to use GeoShred to control the new SWAM iOS apps from Audio Modeling. We love everything that Audio Modeling does and we have setup a special preset for controlling the SWAM iOS apps. This video will use the SWAM Trump app to show step by step how to control it using GeoShred from both Virtual MIDI and as an AUv3 plugin.

Let's look first at how to use Virtual MIDI to use GeoShred to control the SWAM Trumpet.

First lets launch the SWAM Trumpet app. There are a couple of things that you will want to set in the app.

Under Menu: Settings: Options you will want to Enable Virtual MIDI ports. This will require you to restart the app. .

After restarting under MIDI: Presets: you will want to select the "Seaboard Default". This preset is very close to standard MIDI/MPE and pairs well with GeoShred when GeoShred is using it's own MPE MIDI configuration.

Next you will want to start GeoShred. You will need a minimum of GeoShred 5.890.1.

In the setlist "MIDI Out" go to preset number "MIDI OUT: #21 MIDI Out iOS SWAM". This preset has been setup to control the iOS SWAM apps. Here are some features of the preset.

    Velocity (Standard MIDI Velocity)
For iPad velocity is keyY touch (vertical position)
For iPhone with 3D touch velocity is direct impulsive force

    Expression
        For iPad
            Finger expression is KeyY motion
(Channel Pressure aka Channel Aftertouch on the voice channel)
            Pad expression is ExpressionY motion
(Channel Pressure aka Channel Aftertouch on the MPE Master Channel)

        For iPhone with 3D touch
            Finger expression is KeyZ pressure
(Channel Pressure aka Channel Aftertouch on the voice channel)
            Pad expression is ExpressionY motion
(Channel Pressure aka Channel Aftertouch on the MPE Master Channel)

Flutter Tongue is either a slider on the UI or ExpressionX
In both cases this is CC74 on the MPE Master Channel.

Awesome! Thank you for sorting this out 🙏

  • @moForte thanks for the video showing how to use geoshred with swam. I love geoshred, best mpe controller on ios. Ever thought of making a hardware version of geoshred? That would be awesome 🤩

    ?? 🤔
GeoShred on iPad IS a hardware version of itself.

  • wow - just bought the GeoCello
as useful as the video demos are, they can't really articulate the feel of playing this thing
    really, really Lovely :)

  • @Paulo164 I don’t mean an app I mean a physical controller with same functionality as the app. Like the Roli controllers but better 😊

    Agree.

  • @audiobussy ... the app size issue was quickly fixed

JamTrax remain for those who want to use them, and for those of us with tighter space, the problem has gone :)

Sorry, I was joking as I don’t really understand how a GeoShred hardware could really differ from GeoShred on iPad 😉
Maybe you could explain what you would expect from a hardware that you miss on an iPad ? Pressure sensor ? XY-joystick ? Mod wheel, knobs ? Hmm, finally maybe you are right...

Yeah I think you answered your own question lol. Basically an ipad with 3d touch, but also maybe with grooves between the keys. Well, hell, just get a Linnstrument. In fact, @fattigman, a Linnstrument is probably what you are looking for.

I think price tag keeps many people from the Linnstrument...that and maybe portability, since we all use iPads/phones. If someone (or Roger Linn) offered a more portable entry level version, I’m sure it would quickly become the most popular model.

I’m rocking the 2 seaboard blocks as well, but I’m really just waiting for a better alternative in the price range, or for Sensel to make a Linnstrument style overlay for the morph.

  • @Paulo164 yes I mean all those things that gives more feeling than playing on a flat surface. I would buy a geoshred hardware synth with the ability to load patches like the swam instruments.
@Gavinski I think linnstrument is too expensive.

  • Yes guys, I would already have bought a Linnstrument if it was half the price. From what I understand, they are largely hand built. Sensel should definitely do a Linnstrument overlay.

Artiphon Instrument 1 ticks those boxes, and plays beautifully with the GeoSwam instruments. It's basically an MPE keyboard in the form of a customisable guitar touch/slide fretboard with some clever use of accelerometer to access additional dimensions of expression.
