  • Folks - just a thought - the Cakewalk forums might be a good place for us to voice any concerns about - e.g. the MIDI implementation, small fonts, toggle selections, etc.

I signed up - you can find it here:

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/Cakewalk-Instruments-f32.aspx

Hopefully if we all contribute, that will help the Cakewalk folks take all our constructive comments and make it better with updates ongoing :-)

  • Thanks Musicinclusive, that is a good tip and I will get right on it.
As far as need for further midi implamentation I am not discouraged whatsoever given an ability to use audio into my daw which this beast also exels at. I am using it within cubasis right now and having a blast!

Both are iOS synths yet it's apples and oranges? I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm just trying to understand the differences. So, Gadget gives you a feature set to produce a song. Could one reproduce Gadget's sounds with z3ta+? (Though I would imagine this would be a very time consuming endeavor unless you were very skilled.) Also, are both of these best used for EDM?

But Gadget is not an "iOS synth".

    ^^^^THIS^^^^

That is exactly the point yes, One is a synth and the other more of a sequencer.

  • So I tried signing up from my iPad. Short story - their error handling sucks and now I cannot use my login there.

Want to add to tput73's list:

    • Use multi-select list for In and Out Port enables
    • MIDI In channel selection
    • MIDI Out channel selection
    • MIDI Out Virtual Port should work when enabled, sending any MIDI in or played by Arp back out with out channel applied.
    • MIDI Out Virtual Port should not be published at all when not enabled.
    • MIDI In Virtual Port should work, play anything it hears there on appropriate channel.
    • MIDI In Virtual Port should not be published at all when not enabled.
    • Recommend using MidiBridge for testing the Virtual MIDI Ports.
  • This is just another in a long line of very traditional implementations of the same thing we've been seeing for years. I see little advantage to the design here over the design I was using when I made all my music in Sonar 7. Fiddly analogues of physical knobs and sliders is really, really old hat.

The sounds are solid, but not inspiring, and the CPU overheads are very restrictive.

I know we get very excited by seeing our old favourites on our new devices, but with Animoog, Thumbjam, Nave, Magellan, NLog Pro, Sunrizer and Thor on my iPad already I'm struggling to see where z3ta is worth another wodge of cash.

I would suggest using this Cakewalk trouble reporting link for issues and feature requests.

    Issues:

    Feature Requests:

Don't rely on forum responses with Cakewalk. They do respond and monitor periodically, but the links would be a more direct approach and supply a formal submission to the developers.

I was not aware you had to buy any apps at all lol. It is not worth it to you so I think you should stear clear of this synth and leave it to those of us who love it and enjoy it thoroughly! I am glad to know you disaprove of it as it makes my day so much better really.
    Thanks for sharing though.

What are you on about? He is right. And it's a relief to see someone with a different opinion than the giddy all-praise crowd around here.
He finds it uninspiring, as do I. So maybe you could let us hear what you find so exciting about this synth, instead of "lol".

Enjoy your half empty glass Brad. LOL,oops so sorry for getting on about it , not! I thought you would appreciate something negative really. I must have missed the part where I am the only one who can not be negative? I thought You were an excellent teacher, my mistake.

This will be absolutely necessary in order for Cakewalk to take notice! The more people that mention it on their forums the better. Back when Cakewalk was Twelve Tone Systems, they were pretty approachable. But now, they are a much bigger company (Part of Gibson), it will be harder to get things moving.

  • A free trial for 30 days for Windows and Mac is also available here.

This is very good advice too!

  • It sounds so dated.

  • Here is more of possible uses from the desktop version which is the same engine however.

  • Here is a nice little tutorial that works for the ios version though made for desktop.

  • Also you should keep in mind that the only thing that could make this sound dated is the user given the ability with 6 oscillators, 6 LFO's and an extensive programable modulation matrix and fairly large arpeggiator library ect.. The sky is the limit and you get whatever your capabilities are from it. I really have found many useful presets but most always enjoy tweaking them to one degree or another to add my own flavor!

Thank you Yandor . That sounds like good advice to have. I was not aware of this.

  • I know that people have already found out how to load presets from the desktop version into this app so I would think that the preset packs like this should work as well?

  • edited February 2014

It would be nice to know if these work , perhaps a tutorial on loading them in as well. Some of those from the link sound pretty good and are only 6 dollars for each pack!

  • edited February 2014

When using audiobus is anyone else not getting transport controls to show up for cubasis? I tried interapp and that sometimes show up and sometimes do not also? I did get audiobus to work properly by reloading. Still no interapp.

  • First synth with a preset that completely brings my Air to its knees. Boooo! Where's iPad 6?

  • @ ChrisG>. Which patch? I have found a few but not many that will not work on the old ipad mini. In stand alone they pretty much all work by increasing frames but I get limited to 512 within cubasis of course.

So does making the same comment repeatedly.

I pressed the random preset button so don't remember, but yea it was at the lowest buffer (256). No big dealio tho. By the way, does anyone have any z3ta crash-logs yet on their Air? I'm curious if it's running in 64 bit native, or if there's room for some performance tuning on this one..

  • I think it is the waveshaping that makes it unique, it will be fun to try dynamically controlling that with the EGs and LFOs.

    .

  • To be honest, I like the guitar better than synths but somehow I find myself with 13 dedicated synths on my iPad and that does not include Gadget and other apps that also have synth engines among other functions...and I watched Doug's video on this and a few others made with the desktop version and they make me want this one too.

I found this video very informative on what this baby can do:

To me, it seems to be more intuitive than Thor which would be the closest match I think.

Yet the price is putting me off, I am waiting for a couple of other things to drop - DrumPerfect and the new AB2 IAPs for instance - and I cannot have it all...and...really, do I need yet another synth?

  • I think I'll be holding out on this one too, I bought nave because it was exciting, and never use it, I bought arctic pro because it was exciting, and never use it, etc. I have to get it through my head that I really don't make synth based music. I love programming sounds but I think I'm going to take one of the synths I already have (most of them!) and learn it inside out first. I love iSEM, I use it for synth bass onstage all the time.
However, I agree that z3ta looks like it has tons if options and there is not much to limit a user, so if it floats your boat then getting it can't cause much harm, right? If I didn't own any other synth then this looks like a GREAT one to learn some deep programming.
Oh, and dated? I saw a video the other day that stated m1 organ bass is hip again. It always comes back around!
