This is patently untrue. It's a bullshit xenophobic trope passed along by garbage media like The Daily Mail and Russia Today. This article in Foreign Policy debunks this.

Let's try to rely on sources we can trust: The New York Times, the BBC, the WHO*, NPR, Johns Hopkins University, Stamford University.

*(At least before Keith Moon died.)

    Why is that racist?

So right now. We have no way of knowing how a virus that started in bats infected humans.

Best guess would be that poverty plays a large part in this.

Yeah, I get that's a xenophobic trope. The source I saw interviewed was a virologist in a lab working on the virus.
Novel viruses come from animals not people.

"When you look at the genetic sequence of the virus, and you match it up with every known coronavirus, the closest relatives are from bats," said Dr. Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, an environmental health non-profit.

Imma go back to waiting for D_mb_

Yeah, I get that's a xenophobic trope. But the source interviewed was a virologist in a lab working on the virus.
Novel viruses come from animals not people (or the detritus of our manmade environment).

"When you look at the genetic sequence of the virus, and you match it up with every known coronavirus, the closest relatives are from bats," said Dr. Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, an environmental health non-profit.

Not sure what your point is. The racist aspect is the belief that the source of the virus was people eating bats -- for which (as the article points out) there is absolutely no evidence.

The virus originating in bats (which the article notes) does not excuse the false narrative that has been spread about HOW the virus got from bats to people.

    A. Chinese (and other nations) do eat bats. I don’t see what that would be considered racist as it’s a fact.
    B. There is no evidence that folks caught it that way and as they haven’t managed to identify patient zero I doubt we’ll ever know for sure.

  • Anyway. Good luck humans on planet Earth. I think we are going to need it. Hopefully the planet might pull together For once to resolve this for a change.

Quite true about ‘Spanish Flu’ first case probably USA, but World War I and all the troops carried via ships didn’t help, but most virus want to replicate, killing your host is usually a side effect of hopping from one species to another.

Indeed, but even in the best health system of all nations there would be a shortage of respirators.

Also it’s being reported that of those seriously affected by the virus, it’s more deadly than SARS and MERS.

The hospitals here can’t cope now, and it hasn’t even hit yet:

Two weeks of flooding affecting large parts of the UK (including our now, homeless cousin) with no sign of the PM. • Don’t feed the troll, people.

  • The article you're having trouble understanding is from Foreign Policy, a serious-minded conservative-leaning journal. But there are definitely some big words in there. Maybe I can help.

In essence, there is no bat soup in Wuhan. There was a video clip from an "adventure-eating" show from 2016 featuring the eating of a bat as an exotic dish. Bat soup is a rare traditional meal in Palau, an archipelago in Micronesia in the South Pacific, 3300 kilometers from Wuhan.

This is a passage that I found helpful: At a time of heightened fear over a viral pandemic, the Palau video has been deployed in the United States and Europe to renew an old narrative about the supposedly disgusting eating habits of foreigners, especially Asians.

But maybe you're not actually interested in the facts if they contradict your bad-faith argument?

  • I understand the accuracy of whether bat soup caused this is in question. I’m wondering why you think calling it out is racist.

  • @qryss said:
