  • Just a reminder: social distancing is the most effective tool for slowing the transmission of the virus. It really is. There is unanimity on this.

Seriously, make sacrifices now to stay home. Use some vacation days now if your boss won't otherwise let you stay home.

Particularly in the U.S., don't wait for the government to enforce it. They are acting slowly.

Some people are complacent because they know that if the get it they probably won't be very sick. Don't let the fact lure you into complacency.

The U.S. has only 925,000 hospital beds (far fewer than most industrial-ized nations) and most of those are occupied with patients that don't have the virus. The CDC estimates 2.4 to 20 million people will need hospitalization in the U.S. for virus-related care. (96 million to 150 million are expected to get the virus in the next year).

The system can't handle big spikes in health-care needs.

Deprive the virus of potential hosts.

    Stay home when you can.

Practice good hygiene (frequent hand-washing or hand sanitizing)

Really really really try not to touch your face with unwashed hands.

Don't go into a store if it is crowded.

Try to stay at least 2 meters from
    others in public places.

Periodically disinfect and wipe down surfaces in your home in case virus piggybacked home on you.

We are all going to inconvenienced greatly. The inconvenience will be less extreme if we all act now than
    If we wait.

This pretty much sums it up. May as well see if Michael would just make this post an announcement and sticky it at the top of the forum.

(or @McD you are still under the one month edit window. Maybe you could paste this at the end of your original post?)

I also just saw this on FB:

Today at 6pm (Friday 13), grab an instrument (pots and pans will do!) and join in as all of Italy takes part in a 15-minute concert to raise spirits, organized by Flashmob Sonoro. Open your windows, get out on your balcony, and make yourselves heard!

Share your chorus by tagging your videos on FB, IG and Twitter with

Hopefully the fact that Walmart, Target, Walgreens and the major testing labs along with a website have been recruited to speed up and make testing more widely available will mean U.S. citizens will be better able to stop the spread of the virus. When people start to experience symptoms, I hope they’ll take advantage of these expanded testing options.

    Notes from the "Pandemic" Podcast:

    Helen Branswell, Medical Reporter:

20% will suffer serious impacts and need Oxygen at a minimum. Hospitals are finite resources and want to flatten the infection curve to address the shortage of facilities and staffing constraints.

Economists/Investors would prefer the duration of the pandemic be as short as possible so their interests are at odds with the medical community. Most people do want this behind us and it will proceed. Limit investments on lost production capacity and find the new steady state.

I was hoping we all see the benefits of a collective (social safety) response but it's not clear their the right
leadership to maximize the number who survive but rather limit the investments that will prolong the "black swan" freewill economy and find the bottom and mange the way back towards economic growth and ROI.

If you're 20 you might wonder about the massive debt involved to insure the viability of those who have
government funded healthcare for 20% in the high risk categories.

Vote and apply political pressure that either aligns with the greatest good or cut losses for a faster return to growth with less carried debt spent to prolong lives.

Of course, we could see multiple pandemics over 20 years so maybe these are wise investments: short term or long term investing anyone?

I'm tryin to provide a balanced view. I'd their to be capacity for the young at risk to get attention. Money
is an abstraction... we overthink how it can be managed and forget about helping people.

Maybe socialism will be viewed as a rational balance to the desire to acquire wealth and governance to consider wealth protection and growth to be Job #1.

My view on masks: This virus is spread by coughing and sneezing among other things. The transmission can occur through particulate transference. Simply wearing a mask could potentially impede the spread by suppressing the exposure of others to an undiagnosed carrier and possibly ingesting it if you work in close contact with others who may speak, cough, or sneeze.

Teaching everyone to cough and sneeze into their elbow as a germ catcher scales to a better use of resources. However, large fraction of people will get masks and wear them in public. As the virus ramps up this will create shortages of masks.

Making, distributing and providing a steady supply of masks for most to wear and dispose of them properly is a logistical problem.

For the available supply it's best to prioritize them for healthcare workers: treatment centers will need the emergency investments and their workers must be protected.

My wife works for the NHS and say the masks will not protect you, what they do is prevent you from touching your face which may reduce risk.

  • Also the masks can be a hazard and trap the virus inside the mask so you’d have to make sure it’s clean continually, probably not worth it unless you’re in confined spaces with others consistently.

There is a shortage of masks. Leave them for the people that need them. (see the article that I just posted for reasons why)
