I don't think a military coup is one of the disaster scenarios that you need to worry about in the near future...
Don't get me wrong - the US is totally fucked. I just don't see that being one of the paths unless something significant changes in the military. Now if the US were to get in a pointless war with China/Iran and lose (or at least fail to win, while suffering heavy losses) - that might result in a coup. But you'd need a significant culture change in the military. Currently senior members of the military are far more focused on their retirement payday working for Raytheon, or whatever.
A constitutional coup is a possibility I guess. A small one, but the people you'd need on board might be willing to consider a 'transitional stability administration' if Trump gets much worse.
But yeah, we're living through one of those historical periods. Isn't it fun... Wait until global warming really starts to hit and large sections of the US become unlivable. Or when the US starts to seriously start threatening China in a desperate (and doomed) attempt to prevent China becoming the new world power.
COVID-19 was a fairly easy situation to deal with. The Vietnamese managed it. The stuff that's coming is actually difficult - the US doesn't have a prayer.
I don't think a military coup in the US is likely at all. However, questioning the election results, and then relying on the Supreme Court to deliver a biased outcome is definitely possible, like 2000 on steroids.
To me the US is like the most amazing hyperactive ant hill. Takes a kicking and rebuilds itself super fast (all while invading another ant hill (or two)) in the process.
Shivers. I have a friend/law prof who says that the worst possible result for the US in November would be a very tight loss for the incumbent. She's usually right.
That would be the fake result.
It is quite possible that Trump will have another popular vote loss but electoral college victory -- particularly given the shenanigans that Republicans have been up to for years to limit voting. If the current SCOTUS upholds things like Florida's de facto poll tax for ex-felons to have their voting rights restored or if any of the GOP challenges to vote-by-mail, etc hold up and GOP-controlled states continue to make it painful for people of color to vote, Trump could win while being unpopular and losing the popular vote. A ton can happen between now and then -- and the impact of chaos is hard to predict. The state of the pandemic in Fall will have a big impact me-thinks -- but I have no idea what the impact will be.
Whatever happens ultimately it won't mean much, the right wing simply cannot do math, they think there are more of them because Trump won the Electoral College ffs... , they also can't fathom the fact that mathematically speaking they are in much worse shape than in the first civil war, actually they don't even really want a civil war sure they'll go on and on about starting this war/ that war, race wars but they don't really want it.... No more than they want to secede from the union which is something else they constantly go on and on about but they never leave and if you think about it it makes sense, what would they do without people around them to hate and try to oppress , they'd be bored as fck and have no reason to live.
this is true, the real American virus is at the core of every single problem we have on the surface, whether it be lead in the water of 'some places' or toxic landfills overly represented in 'some communities' or can this or that kind of sexually oriented person be allowed to keep their job or can this gender get an equal paycheck or domestic terrorism (about as stupid as reverse racism cause it's just terrorism) or can thousands of children that look like this not be permanently lost to their parents or..or....or.....or........or

The election could be suspended if the pandemic gets bad again, for example. Which it might well.
Democrats keep saying this, and yet the right keep winning. Now you can argue it's only because of gerrymandering and vote suppression, and control of the courts - and you'd be largely right. But so what - what are Democrats doing to address those things? The US has some ways to go, but if you want to see a possible future look at Hungary.
The Republicans play to win. Democrats do not.

'Win' ?.... the question is win what, all they want is to be superior to other human beings and that's impossible. They think they are the silent majority, just like they think their victory is a mathematical possibility which it is not, and they aren't the silent majority either... if the preacher butler crowd ever pushes their inferior counterparts over the line of moral justifiability it would be a wrap and a much more tidy wrap than the first time around.
It's always been that way, you say they are playing to win but history says that they've always played to win and that they've always got squashed when people who don't get up everyday with thoughts of destroying other peoples lives have finally had enough.
bullies can be terrifying, but nice guys who have ran out of nice can be more terrifying when they have no other recourse.
if the non-racist don't come out and fight against Trump this season they will lose the election as they should.
the fact that Elizabeth warren isn't the lead on the ticket is almost vomit inducing, but like Radiohead says, we do it to ourselves... one of these days we'll get tired of it, and Trump might just be just what we need to get tired of it.
Best case scenario is Trump shouts and screams about voter fraud and a rigged election but has no option but to leave kicking and shouting and complaining as he does so.
Worse case scenario is he refuses to leave and hoards of his gun-totting die hard supporters descend upon Washington to defend him armed to the teeth. Thousands of them surround the Whitehouse and camp outside for days and there is a standoff between them and armed FBI.
How that ends is impossible to predict.
what makes you think this, we haven't gotten to this point because a majority of people are like trump, we've gotten to this point because a loud, and insane minority of people couldn't handle having a black man in the White House that wasn't a slave building it or one of it's service staff.... they're still a minority.

I think the number of Trump supporters deranged and deluded and insane enough to bring out their guns and go and support him numbers in at least the hundreds, probably thousands, hopefully not tens of thousands.

That’s the hospital death number, total deaths from the disease is just under 50k.
There’s no escaping the facts - at least half of those could have been saved by an earlier lockdown, and many more by taking note of the operation 4 years ago that recommended investment in safety equipment.
As everyone must be aware by now, we have a totally, criminally negligent government that acts in the interests of their own party and elitist, rich friends, rather than the population as a whole.
And relaxing lockdown early now, and trashing their health message to save the career of one adviser, chaotic testing regime, still a lack of PPE, means a potentially bigger second wave will hit in a few months time. Along with a no-deal Brexit, that will destroy us as a trading nation and scare off workers from overseas we desperately need to keep going, the UK is finished.

A couple of months ago I might have been more optimistic, but as each week goes by there's another new scandal, another crazy, bad decision by the Government, another move that makes things worse rather than better.
The problem we have here, is that by delaying lockdown we not only have the higher death rates for that initial period of delay, but it's made containing the disease much harder, getting the 'r' value down, and causing the lockdown to last longer. And we probably can't afford the length of lockdown required to diminish the capabilities of the virus, so lockdown is being eased before it's safe to do so.
The PM's chief adviser broke not only the lockdown rules he'd put in place, but potentially laws as well. You don't 'test' eyesight problems with a 45 minute drive in a car with your family. That's not in the Highway Code.
The obvious thing to do was for him to resign, or be sacked. Instead, the government are standing by him, and bending/changing the rules he broke to cover his ass, despite the fact thousands of others are now using his actions as an excuse to break the law, and spread the virus further. Safeguarding message destroyed. At the comittee meeting where the PM was asked to explain his defence of the adviser, the same adviser was feeding him lines, telling him what to say from the sidelines. We've gone through the looking glass.
With these people in charge, there is no hope. Each week will bring a new scandal, a new bad move, another botched action - until we've gone past the point of no return. We may already have.
We won't be one of those countries where the virus is virtually eradicated, and contained in small clusters. We had one chance to do this right, and we've blown it. It'll be wave after wave here, and extensive lockdowns - whether the government likes it or not.
The UK picked the worst possible moment in time to emulate the USA.
The U.K. wasn’t emulating the U.S. any more than Trump was emulating the U.K.. If anything, Boris has more influence on Trump than vice versa.
