  • Is Audiolayer still a must have?

It’s the cheapest it’s ever been at $11.99

I have many sampling apps, but none are quite what Audiolayer is... couple quick questions...

    1. is it working fine on 14.2?

    2. I’m concerned about the size of the app once I start loading in several patches (exs24, SFZ, VSCO Library, etc.) Does the size of the app get really big, really quickly, Once you download a few presets? I guess I’m asking what’s the approximate size of these presets that you download or import into AL? I’m sure there’s a wide range, but I’m trying to get an idea of how big the apps storage might get once, I add some patches? It’s just under 300mb as is. Does it get bloated easily?

can you make good arps/melodies that would fit the more chilled out downtempo vibe with egoist?

please help lolol i can’t buy another app i dont use 😎

Egoist got a lot of love around here. We had a thread on here years ago professing our love. If I’m not mistaken even featured videos by @AudioGus displaying some cool ways to use it. Very underrated. I’ve made complete tracks with just Egoist but have t used it in awhile.

I dig egoist. The way i use it is basically just clicking buttons. A lot of clicking random, listening, tweaking, clicking random on another set of attributes, tweaking, etc. you can get some cool sounds and it’s entertaining for about an hour at a time. It’s different than drum machines - different then anything I can really think of. It basically chops, gates and twists samples ina rhythmic way. I dig it

thanks guys! i just went back into those older threads, i must have missed em , seems like no one hates it and that people have been getting good results! i’m pretty much only looking at the chopper/sample player part as what i’ve heard of the bass synth seems like i have better synths for bass... but who knows! i’m sure it is still very useful and fun. there’s very little egoist content on youtube that i could find where people where making the kinda stuff i do, chilled out arps and such’s but i’m thinking that chopper can cover a wide range of ideas... imma go in friday if it’s still on sale!

It will grow by the size of the sample libraries you add...true of any sampler.

Yea that’s what I thought. But I was just trying to wrap my head around what it will end up being but it all depends on what you load into it, so yea...

  • TB Reverb seems to be the unanimous winner in a rare show of agreement for the forum users! Thanks to all!

However, the discount on TBReverb is not very significant... On the other hand, I’ve been waiting for mononoke and mozaic, so that should keep me busy for a while. I’m also thinking of grabbing xynthesizr and enso at such low prices. There’s always Plateau on mirack to treat them until we see better days (either better discounts or more spending $$$)!

Sugar bytes about 40% off - Love to hear if people suggest any of the following apps Looperator/Effectrix/Turnado/Thesys/Unique?

I love them but Looperator and Effectrix can end up doing something very similar, so if cash is limited, just one of those will probably suffice.

If I could just get one, I'd get Turnado, which has a broader range of options and a lot of modulation options, and also the best for live improvisation\performance. It's great for adding a bit of rhythmic interest as part of an effect chain but it can do a whole bunch of things. It really is worth reading the manual thoroughly, as there's a lot going on and many of the presets need to be tamed a bit to be useful, but it really is worth it, as more musically useful setups and definitely possible with a bit of tweaking.

Effectrix is the most limited, and surprisingly lacking in randomisation options which SB usually excel in, so each pass of the loop can end up sounding a bit samey. Still great though but I end up using it differently to Turnado.

It depends on your music making workflow. If you are more production focused e.g. use the plugins to render out loops for use in other things, any of them will serve you well, but I'd suggest Turnado or Looperator for a more live or improvised workflow.

But that's my take - interested to know how others use them.

Unique is the SB app I use the least.

Thanks so much @craftycurate I’m going to get Turnado . Out of effectrix or loop operator what do you suggest.

Ok fam, I need help again. I have been wanting black hole, it’s been the only reverb I feel like I need (I have pro r)
My question is should I just get black hole at the sale or pick up the bundle that black hole is included in, which comes with some nice stuff but not qvox (another one I’ve been wanting)
But are any of the ones included in the pro effect bundle one worth it too? Should I snag the bundle or just the two I wanted originally?
I have great plug ins but feel I need a good spacey reverb for vocals and a pitch harmonizer or More vocal like effects.

My favorite Eventides are Blackhole and Undulator. Harmonizr is the most mud8cal pitch shifter for vocals.

Thanks! I picked up blackhole earlier. Now it’ll give me the bundle with both of what you mentioned for $25... steal, for sure. Will be doing this before the sales are over.

It is surprising there isn’t more Egoist content but Im sure you won’t regret it. You can use it as a sampler/chopper so depending on the source you can certainly get all sort of wild arps going.

Also, I wouldn’t sleep on the bass or drum synths. There is a lot more than meets the eye. It’s like Gadget for me, everytime I open it I’m reminded how dumb I am for not using it more. You can see Drum Computer, Effectrix and Looperator DNA inside Egoist and it’s equally effective as a production and live tool with many midi options.

i wish there was more egoist stuff, that’s kinda what i base buying older apps on.. the new ones i jump on the hype train with everyone else and get on release haha.
that’s how i feel about gadget...i sleep on it then open it up and shit just happens! music gets made! i feel like a moron ignoring it then 😎😜
i do love the sugar bytes team, aesthetic and apps sound so im going in!

It depends what will serve your creative goals and processes best. They are both effects sequencers so there's considerable overlap with the end results they produce. I think Looperator might be better for glitchy beat slicing type effects if that's your thing. But Turnado is also excellent for beat slicing options, so am not sure what to recommend really. Maybe Looperator on balance for flexibility but it's also dearer I think, only £2 off whereas I think Effectrix has a bigger discount. If funds are limited maybe Turnado will do all you need? Up to you :)

I was an Egoist fan too until Korg introduced Stockholm in Gadget. That replaced it for me, never looked back. It's based on rex/rx2 loops though, you either use it with all the free or commercial rex loops available for download or slice your own using propellerhead ReCycle. Certainly not everyone's business but absolutely stunning for what I do. It's like having Spectrasonics Stylus RMX on the iPad.

Can you please explain what "must have" means? 😅

The developer usually fixes any potential iOS incompatibilities sooner or later so I wouldn't worry about its stability.

Now the size of the samples you're using with it is basically the major point of AudioLayer.
It's one of the very few apps that won't choke when you load your 2GB large dream piano inside your favorite AUv3 host. AL is fairly unique in this regard.

I was playing with replicant just yesterday on iOS 13.7. It is one of the Audio Damage plugins that I have not had stability issues with and it is great fun, though u definitely need to read the manual (or watch Jakob Haq's excellent run-through) to learn how to use it.

Oscilloscopes are always fun. While I’m not crazy about the sound of most FM synths, at least the OPL weighs far less than a Yamaha or Casio.
