    ....indefinable menace

OMG that is too funny :-)

  • Thanks @ArcaneScreams...I think ?? I'll see if I can squeeze it in, but being unemployed is taking a lot of my time these days! Actually, much to my dismay, it's been busier trying to figure out how to get re-employed at my age!

  • @funjunkie It was meant all in good fun. I was unemployed for almost two years, a few years back. We look to be about the same age. I know how it feels. Hearing 'No' a few times I can deal with. 'No' a hundred times is hard. Hang in there.

It's very easy to find and replace the samples in Oscilab using iFunBox, for anyone interested. I have not experienced any crashes or other issues doing this. I'm on iPad 3, 7.0.4. The directory is 'User Applications-Oscilab-Oscilab.app-samples'. 15 drum kits and 36 sample folders, all wav. Rename your wav files to corresponding numbers. Make sure you back up those files first. Have fun!

Wow, that's an interesting idea! I don't hate the kits and some of the samples are decent, but replacing them with a few more useful ones could really go a long way to improving the usefulness of the app.

  • Thanks man @ArcaneScreams, but I heard it too many times already...,buying a franchise, which is eating up all my music time!!

@StormJH1 Finding what samples trigger what is kind of a pain, but easy enough. There are 51 folders. Anyone wanting to take a few random ones and posting what they are would be helpful. Then we could put it in a list. For example, Drums - 0 is the 909. Drums - 1 is the 808. Drums - 3 is the Linne. Samples 302 is the Sharp Lead. Etc.

  • This is brilliant, thank you!
Any idea if one could also replace the samples in the iElectribe Gorillas Edition?
    (Sorry, off topic..)

  • @yaknepper You're welcome. I do not see samples in iElectribe. Which is a good thing, if it generates it's own sounds.

  • Here's another example, using longer samples I have, to see if they would trigger in time. This is a bit experimental, and the sound can be a bit jarring at a few points. But I think it shows how the beats in Oscilab don't quite gel when switching from pattern to pattern. Using short wav files, under 2 seconds, works best. Caveat emptor.

  • Ok, ok, no more. I actually like this one. Spacelab. I need to learn how to embed a link without my soundcloud avatar coming up so big.

  • @k7k0 Ha! That's a helpful first post. Welcome to the boards!

  • That IS helpful. Thanks @k7k0 !

So, for BASS and LEAD, is it just a single .wav file that gets pitched by the app? If so, doesn't it have to have a uniform starting point, like C3 or something? I don't usually mess around with non-percussive samples (other than soundfonts), so pardon my ignorance.

And for DRUMS, the "808", etc. should actually be collections of 8 wav files, one for each instrument...correct?

  • @StormJH1 I think that the samples are in octaves. When I imported mine, I was expecting to be able to choose them, like in the drum editor. Can't do that. So, I'm assuming the samples start at the lowest register, 0 being C0 or C3, and going up from there. That is what I was trying to get SpookyZoo to see earlier, when I asked him if he noticed anything about the numbers. The app doesn't tweak much on its own. It relies on those octave samples. That happens in the Freq tab. The pitch is fun to play with in the drum editor. Can get some good sounds out of there. Also, I do think longer samples can be used, if you set the bar length first. Try 8 bars, and see how long a sample will play. On the right of the drum editor, you can choose more instruments. That's why there are more than 8 samples. All in all, this app really needs sample import.

  • Wow, those are nice sounds you posted, @ArcaneScreams, I like very much. Up to now, oscilab most of all made me revisit Diff.Drummer for further experiments, but you make me go into the Osci-Lab once more, man!

  • edited June 2014

@animal Thank you very much. I appreciate it. All the sounds/samples are mine. I just used the Lab. I think we can get some unique sounds of this app, and I want to hear what other people are doing, so I hope to start seeing some music posts soon. Feeling kind of lonely out here, haha. Once this app gets on the 'Bus, gorgeous gorgosities will happen. Whatever this thing is, we can definitely get way more than our money's worth if we apply a little effort. Just need to come at it from a different angle.

  • @ArcaneScreams ...your samples have persuaded me to chuck my $$$ at this one having been a bit unimpressed with the sounds exampled on the dev's demo. Can't really balk at the intro price & this will obviously become infinitely more interesting when AB & Midi are on board.

I hope you have fun with it. This can be a really useful app if implemented in the right way. I hope you post some music. The app just needs some things added in. So, on that note.....

@k7k0 You're the developer, aren't you? Your posts on soundcloud are 4 months old. I do hope you come back. I have been playing with Oscilab all night, and have a few suggestions that may help your app perform in an interesting way, and be beneficial to the performance of your application. Send me a private message if you'd like to talk.

  • Bump. Now back to a great thread - some good stuff here.

  • I'd say the tangible benefits of a forum in action etc...

Hmm, I can't write files into the samples folders via ifunbox? Don't usually have problems with this ... any specific trick for this app?

edit .. cant delete samples, overwrite samples, create folders... :(
Trying to add a 44.1 mono wav < 2 secs named 24.wav to a jailed ipad mini retina, 7.1.1

  • Yeah, I was able to find the sample folders (and copy them to my PC as WAV files), but I can't seem to delete them or rename them or anything like that. And i can't copy new files in, even if they have the same name.

  • edited June 2014

You can delete them. Select them all, one folder's contents at a time. Using your mouse. Right click. Delete. And just drag your replacements in from the desktop. I'm at work. I will be back later tonight.

  • edited June 2014

Thanks for the replies, sadly this is a no go on my osx / 7.1.1 setup, whether trying to delete a single file, multiple files, single folder or multiple folders.. nada .. zip ;)

I can delete from all other apps (which support it) - so if you can do it, the only differences might be ios version or pc vs mac?

  • edited June 2014

All I can say is ask around on the iFunBox forum or google. It works for me on PC. I'll keep checking in. Edit: Just a quick thought... Think you may need to set file ownership permissions to delete? Try that.

  • I'm back from work. I will try to help in any way I can for those who are having issues with copying samples. From what I'm reading, this problem is happening on iOS 7.1.1, regardless of PC or Mac. Is that correct? Is anyone here able to get samples in, on any OS or iOS combination thru iFunBox? It can't just be me able to do this.

  • I have just tried to delete and rename files and no go it seems. Permissions option appears to be disabled as well. iOS 7.1.1

Tried in various apps with same result

  • edited June 2014

@thinds Hi. No for you as well, huh? Are you on PC or Mac, and what OS version?

  • PC, I haven't used iFunbox for a while but never had a problem before. Just updated to v2.8 but still no-go. I'm guessing something changed in 7.1.1
