Im not sure if the rig sale is still on. But im looking to buy 1-2 rigs. One is for metal and looking from @JoyceRoadStudios posts, it looks like either the Randall Sanat or LRS Serenity Gain.

I also want one for clean tone. Looking for something that will exaggerate the twang of my coil split pickup, and is touch sensitive. I’m hoping to find a tone somewhere close to Mateus Asato’s Time https://youtube.com/watch?v=r-9fiNDU-Iw, so something that will work well with reverb and an overdrive pedal like Nembrini’s Clon Minotaur. Any suggestions.

@sjm_90 it depends on the type of metal you’re playing. There are a lot of modern metal specific amp rigs available that I don’t own, so can’t comment on those.

I like the Randall rig a lot, it has a great tone specifically for that chugga chugga palm muting metal where the pitch bends up ever so slightly. Great rig for drop tuning or 7 string. So very much modern metal, doom or death metal type rig, can get Pantera also but it wouldn’t be my first choice for 80s melodic type metal. Almost all the profiles in this rig are higher gain, this is not a rig for cleans.

Serenety Gain Mezzabarba rig is great because it’s not just one high gain tone, it offers a huge selection of different flavors of high gain. If you’re looking to audition a huge palate of high gain sounds to find the perfect one, this rig has it. This is a heavy metal, hard rock, melodic rock kind of rig, really nice in the upper mids for heavy rock. There is a lot of gain on tap in this rig, but It also has a great clean channel, it’s spaghetti twangy and beautiful, so this rig could be both metal and clean.

Another very versatile rig is the Boogie MarkV. Obviously a great amp for metal, trademark Mesa sound, lots of variety from drop tune doom metal to grunge. But this also has a great Tweed clean channel and at least 20 clean profiles that are perfectly balanced with a twang. So this rig can be both metal and clean. I would say if you know and like the Mesa sound for metal, get this.

If you’re looking for more 80s metal, BHS Sold, BHS MetlX, some of the Marshalls, Rivera rig, many many more.

The fx heavy shred metal rigs are a dime a dozen. Perhaps a more scooped metallic kind of amp will bring out the twang you want. The Yamaha rig for example.

For mostly clean rigs with some low to medium vintage and classic overdrive, Dang, Bassman, Tremolux, Tone impera. These will all be twangy enough. Fried Betty has twang clean and Marshally crunch all in one channel. Hope this rundown is helpful.

  • Thanks a lot @SNystrom and @JoyceRoadStudios

For my metal needs, it looks like the Randall Sanat is the way to go. I am looking for more modern metal tones and the occasional death metal riff ala Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries era Opeth. I already have the JPC2 rig and its great for a lot of Prog Metal stuff, but has its limitations when it comes to heavy gain. I also got the Laney IRT one for higher gain, but find it too muddy although I have to play around with it a bit more.

For cleans, I’m sold with the Tone Impera based on @flo26 demos, but unlikely that I can get the same out of my guitar and fingers as well. His demos of Dang also sound great. Maybe I might have to extend my budget and get both. I wonder if I’m missing out by skipping the Fender rigs completely.

There are a lot of modern metal rigs available, PRS Archon, Fortin SGL, Kranak, Diezel, etc… I would go to the Overloud site and listen to the demos, maybe something you like will jump out. I like Randall and Boogie amps in real life… for Opeth and twangy clean the serenity gain is not a bad option. Check out the different Mezzabarba trinity demos on YouTube.

Tone impera good for stratty single coil tones. For more twang you can try Dang or Bassman, they’re very similar. Tremolux for good jangle.

Thanks. Completely missed that there was an Archon rig. Would have gone for that over the Ironheart if i did. I didnt like the Serenity Gain demos, but will check out the mezzabarba trinity demos like you suggested.

Btw, i was thinking of buying the pedal bundle as well, just so i can have a single app setup with a midi pedal if required in future. Will that unlock the IR loader or do i have to get one of the genre bundles for that?

Thanks again for your help. Really appreciate all your contributions in this thread.

You dont need to purchase anything to load IRs. All of the cabinets let you choose an IR to use it instead of the cabinet emulation. The IR Loader module as a separate module is not available on iOS and is not needed.

The IR loader and Rig player are free on iOS. When you set up an account and log in inside the app, you get the rig player and some other freebies. The IR loader is available inside any of the cabinet sim modules. Just pick any of the free cabinets and place it right after the amp head or rig player head, then add IRs inside the cabinet’s menu. When you do that make sure to turn OFF “cab power” inside the Rig Player’s menu, because that’s what bypasses the cab inside the rig profile so you can use the loaded IR. You can’t load IRs inside the rig player yet at this point, only bypass them and use a cabinet sim component to load. The cabinet sims all look different but the IRs loaded inside them will sound identical regardless of which you pick.

When you cycle through Rig player profiles you’ll probably need to turn OFF “cab power” every time, if you want to hear your loaded IR. It doesn’t stay bypassed as you cycle through, I don’t think.

The midi in THU is great and pretty logical. Keep in mind the fx pedal bundle and the distortion pedal bundle are two separate bundles. I really like all the OD/Dist pedals in the collection, but you can make do by just using all the high gain profiles inside a rig that already have amp gain or third party gain pedals baked in, then just use the fx bundle with those. If you’re using THU standalone on the box with midi, it’s a great option. If you are using it inside a DAW or AUM, you can chain together other fx pedals from Nembrini, Eventide, FAC, etc…

  • @espiegel123

Aaa, thanks a lot. I didnt know that since i never used any of the cabinets. So i can just add one of the free cabinets in the rig player chain and add my IRs. Thank you.

Yup..and dont forget to turn off the rig's cab.

Yup, i just went and tested that out. You’re right that it doesn’t stay bypassed as I cycle through the rigs.

The rigs do come with a lot of baked in gain options so I think i’ll skip the distortion bundle for now. I have many of the Nembrinis and all the Eventides which I regularly use, but would like the option to have a midi pedal setup and specially the option for a Wah pedal if ever required. Good to hear the midi in THU is logical.

The THU midi read is super flexible and will do whatever you want it to. Easy to set up an expression pedal. Also, to expose midi command options, both in global and current preset, just keep pressing + and you will see many more options. You can control any part of a component in any way. I think thu does midi cc only, which is more flexible than midi pc anyway. But be careful as some midi pc only controllers may not work.

One thing I really like about the thu midi is that it groups the different effects into families, “reverb”, “delay” “pitch”, “distortion”, etc… so this means for example you can have different delay pedals across many different presets, but the midi button or message to activate or toggle them will be exactly the same. It just a great organizational short cut.

Got the Dang. Love it! I enjoy the cleans of Nembrini’s Cali Reverb boosted with their Clon Minotaur, but this rig takes it to another level, without any other pedals needed.

Also got the fx pack. Havent gone through it but looks really promising

Still deciding which high gain rig to get. After the Ironheart, I’m very hesitant to press the purchase button. Lets see.

Flo’s demo of the Impera still has me drooling at the warmth of those tones, but I’m holding back. Lets see for how long

Btw, if I cycle through the rigs with the rig player, the cab stays bypassed. I had mistook earlier with changing presets which is when the cabs turn on again

  • Don’t hold back too long. The sale ends July 13th! 😉

  • Three new Choptones rigs coming this week!

The first one is not cheap — even at the introductory price: $26.99

Have you been saving your pennies @JoyceRoadStudios??? 😊

Haha yea, im probably going to pull a couple of triggers by then. Looks like they are coming with a couple new rigs in the next days though. Would be interested in seeing what’s on offer.

  • Yeah, that IIC P sounds pretty good in the demos, and it features an ungodly 250 Rigs.

If they nailed the Boogie’s 5-band EQ, it might just be worth the price premium…

  • edited July 2021

Yup. I already have the JPC2 rig though which is from Jon Petrucci’s signature IIC+. If i didn’t have that already I would probably have gone for the IIC P.

Btw, does it show in your ios THU store? I can’t see it.

  • There also is a dr z rig and a tweed boogie rig. That look interesting

Update the app. Three new rigs there plus Mesa eq pedal. I will pass on these…

  • @sjm_90, you may need to search for the Overloud THU in the AppStore, go to the bottom and scroll back to the top. The update app window and the option to update should appear then.

I experienced the same issue here this morning.

  • This new Boogie rig is apparently based on the highly valued (and rare) IIC+ model. For those unfamiliar with this rare bird and interested learning more, here is a great backgrounder on it:

  • From the article:

It “is one amp that can really do all styles exceedingly well. I’ve used mine for country, worship, and Top 40 classic rock gigs. You can do it all; metal (Metallica ‘Master Of Puppets’), progressive rock (Dream Theater), whatever you want to dial in. The clean channel is a great warm-blackface-type clean, while the gain channel has an awesomely warm, squishy and chewy rhythm/lead tone.”

The three new rigs are already available in the store, so no suspense there. Mesa IIC+, Mesa Tweed, and DR. Z Maz 38.

The Mesa IIC+ is an iconic amp, but it’s a bit redundant for me since I already have the Mark V rig. The IIC+ simul class channel/circuit is already inside the Mark V, with plenty of iic+ profiles. In fact, the Mark V is really versatile and has “40 years of Mesa Boogie in one amp”. It even has the “tweed” channel, which I’d assume is similar to the Mesa tweed amp. So I don’t see anything unique about the iic+ only rig, except that it comes with the Mesa 5 band eq pedal for free, $14 value on its own. Great pedal in real life.

The Dr. Z rig is enticing though… no sale price on any of these…

Planning to visit your brewery with some cast mates after one of our matinees, maybe 7/14 or 7/18 after 5pm. The shows are at Hudson gardens in south Denver so will drop by after.

Cool. I just heard an ad on the radio for the Hudson garden shows. Wondered if you would be doing those. Yeah stop on by just let me know for sure when and I'll make sure to be there.

  • So wait are there THU amps on sale? I can't tell in the app? For some reason I thought I saw somewhere that there were but now I can't tell lol

  • @ambrosiajam

All the bundles are on sale. All the rigs are also on sale, except for I think the 3 rigs added in the most recent update.

It was only a matter of time before you’d stop injecting new rigs into your studio.

Now… could you get more instruments to improve your reviews:

    Gibson ES-335
    Any decent 7-string for metal
    5-strong banjo
    Balalaika
    And an upright bass

Sweet! How much are they normally? Or do they go on sale semi-frequently? Not sure I wanna fall down the rabbit hole unless I REALLY want to , if you get what I mean 😅

The rigs are very rarely on sale. This might be the first significant discount on the individual rigs.
