The world would certainly be a much better place, but sadly most 'Muricans' have the mental capacity of their grade-school bully "leader."

I still don't believe this. And I'm still optimistic that Biden will win, BUT the notion that Trump was some weird accident that would never be repeated is no longer true. Whatever the result, a large number of people throughout this place will have consciously voted for him. You are what your record says you are was a phrase from Bill Parcells I've been carrying around for a long time. Now we know.

Agreed. If American folk were content they would have never had to vote or re-vote mr Trump. More of the same wasn’t an option 4 years ago.

It’s funny how many Biden voters march under ‘anything but Trump’ banner and many Trumpsters under ‘anything but back to the old normal’ one. I don’t think anyone other than fringes is actually wholeheartedly voting for either of the candidates. That’s a sorry state of affairs. One thing is clear to me: the Americans want change it’s just they’re not quite clear what it is.

At 10.09am GMT I can’t see how Biden can win TBH.

I don’t know how to express what I’m feeling right now, but it’s not a good feeling. I have a feeling Trump will win, and I don’t know if I can deal with another 4 years of this shit. I’m not talking about policy, I’m talking about the divisiveness, the hatred, and the partisan politics where there’s not even discussion of issues, just votes down party lines. As it is, there’s barely any changes to the senate, which may trouble me even more.

I already don’t have cable and watch no “news” shows, I think I may have to disconnect some more.

Just the way I feel. Hard to comprehend right now.

The best I can say about Trump is that he outed a whole semi-hidden realm of credulous suckers by flattering their most dull-witted, self-serving instincts via indulgent chants, sub-dad humor, grievance politics, dorky machismo, and a truly dumbfounding lack of socioeconomic nuance. Dude paints himself as a "builder," but any idiot can see he's an opportunistic huckster, happy to part out any business he doesn't know how to fix. You don't have to love Biden - or even the federal gov't! - to want Trump's half-assed jive excised from the world of American public policy. He's a knockoff handbag of an authority figure, all cardboard and bad stitching. I wouldn't trust him to walk my dog.

Listen: my mom owns a small business, having become a real estate agent in her late thirties after years in the typist trenches. My dad and grandpa were both blue-collar Midwestern Teamsters who believed in the dignity and value of manual labor. I grew up with buddies who worked in factories, worked on farms, and did landscaping for a living. I come from the very world Trump supposedly wants to protect and help flourish. But I've also read Trump's platform, and all it does is lazily dangle red meat before a God-fearing middle class, redirecting a very real anger about wealth disparity towards fear of immigrants/foreign peoples, fear of social movements, fear of wildly modest health and gun-control programs, and a kind of aggressively short-sighted economic narcissism dressed in "common sense" drag. It's not plainspoken truth or pre-fight rhetorical rope-a-dope; it's think tank-researched B.S., Bernays-ian and hollowly seductive.

For Trump, politics is just a poorly reffed team sport, with rallies providing a delusional "We're #1!" tailgate party for those who want it. Some folks are happy to be his easy mark; after all, he provides pat, suspiciously convenient answers to complex - and often sacrifice-requiring - problems. It is, I'm sure, fun to boo his speech's targets and dream of a world where the other team is a bunch of pedos, crooks, and "demon rats" (or whatever). But it's an illusion. Trump can't build anything - a broader coalition, a border wall, etc. The guy can only haphazardly, meanly destroy things. And to the rest of us, his followers feel like defensive cultists, chasing Trump's shiny Hale-Bopp tail into oblivion.

Perfectly articulated. I’m hollowed out and just so disappointed, no matter the result.

  • Here’s the plain and simple truth. Support for Trump is support for a man who has regularly supported racism, sexism, and homophobia. Biden’s VP pick is a woman and a POC and one of his strongest political supporters is a gay man.

Not sure how anyone can vote for Trump and not feel like a piece of shit.

Man, I’m depressed enough already, you had to throw that in? 😂

  • I went to the wrong precinct (make fun of me). I actually kinda thought they would kinda let you vote anywhere as long as your proper paperwork and id is in order. I am super super un educated in politics so I could have totally user error. In my utopia world if your a human in a state (maybe id maybe not u lost it etc) you can vote without any mishaps. Anyway is it still up in the air or or they bickering>? remember I am as a non human entity.

  • Both candidates lost! wow a first! jk love yal=wl

  • What have we become that we allowed it to be this close? No one should be in any doubt now of what kind of person is in the White House, so voting for him is an endorsement of all the things he stands for.

  • Clap clap

...what we have become that it was the highest turnout since 1900. It's depressing that americans still put faith in a broken system. The last time Ralph Nader ran, he said that if there was only a 40-45% turnout , elections could be challenged in the courts. Only when enough americans know their system is broken will anything change about the disgusting two party system. For those who voted against Trump, thinking they chose a better candidate....give me a break. They're all war criminals and americans who voted for them are war criminal enablers. Suck it up. Let's look forward to the riots. Maybe that'll change something. Patriotism is a mental disorder. But being a republican or democrat is an outright psychosis.

  • The Senate, the Senate, the Senate.

So infuriating! It’s unreal with so many dead, righteous peaceful civil protests against authoritarian abuse and murder, and daily presidential lawlessness and corruption that Trump and his sycophantic enablers even get a shot at being re-elected.

Welcome to years of grinding gridlock and unwarranted concessions to the criminal GOP.

Yeah - so disheartening. We really need all houses in alignment to tackle big issues that have been dithered over for the past 30 years. The time for incremental changes is long past and we're in a holding pattern once again.

I think unfortunately many Americans are what you’ve described above, Trump’s just normalised it alongside his clumsy and to the point rhetoric. I think he also, at least in theory run on anti emigration and protectionist promises which directly touch people’s lives. Whether he delivers (Mexico wall) is to be seen but it definitely doesn’t make for a great image. The left is status quo which is great if you’re well off and educated albeit this is a massive oversimplification and stereotyping.
I hope Trump doesn’t win but neither will stop American expansionism, globalisation or climate change. Where’s Al Gore when you need him?!

  • I’m a Canadian, and I spend a lot of time (too much) worrying about the well-being of Americans (I do about Canadians as well just FYI ). But I’m surprised that Trump is doing as well as he is. If so many people are going to choose him, then that’s their choice, and I should stop worrying because they are getting the outcome they want. I just feel sad for the environment. (Also socialized medicine is awesome.)

  • Truly gutting that US can't decisively boot out a wannabe tin-pot dictator...but looks like Biden will win at least as he's on track for Michigan (My brother lives there coincidentally) and Nevada which is all he needs now. But with all the legal challenges it might be a month until it's truly official.

  • This was devastating and I too feel just gutted after this election, yet again. The Senate faces no consequences for a shameful time in history. Really, did you really think in your heart of hearts that any trump supporters would abandon him at this point? They’re in so deep.

But folks, Biden is actually going to be the next president. It will be ugly but I can see it.

  • The whole world is in this chaotic polarised state not just the USA, as it was during the 1930s, fanatical craziness was a global problem then.
