  • From what I’ve seen of Andrew, he primarily uses iOS to get an idea started, then transfers via IDAM to Ableton. Considering this is the way he’s used iOS in past videos, I would be surprised if it is auv3. Inter connectivity between iOS apps is only important for us weirdos who use iOS for more than a simple sketch pad.

Looks like we posted at the same time. See my screenshot on the previous page.

Exactly. I think charging is fair enough if he can get it. As long as he states clearly in the video that it is sponsored.> @xraydash said:

Yeah, he’s always very forthright about what is or isn’t sponsored.

  • I don't have an issue with the charging aspect to be honest. Andrew is on Lines quite a bit and he always comes across as a really nice and genuine guy. Knowing your own value isn't a negative, especially when creatives so frequently get taken for granted ("I've got no budget but the exposure will be great!")

  • It's the way it works on YouTube, and we accept that. But it's truly an insane conflict of interest. His videos are very well done, and he's a really engaging presence, and he has a gift for explaining things clearly. And musical talent! And wondrous eyebrows.

But when somebody doesn't just give him some hardware to test but actually pays him to make a video? That's called doing a commercial. And maybe that's fine?

It's just a messed-up ecosystem that as viewers we don't want to pay for the content we consume, so for someone to make high-quality videos — to make a living — he has to get paid somehow.

Facts! Laughed out loud on that one.

I feel like an argument could be made that Koala sampler is in the running here for best portable sampler

There's a good opportunity here for a flip flop pun.

Best? it's most definitely in the running. It might even take the "most powerful" crown with the next update...

I hear time stretching in the works, which will take it to the next level for sure. The sequencer still needs work for Koala to take the crown. Don't get me wrong--I love Koala. But the sequencer is pretty thin.

  • You hear correctly, mate! It's sounding brilliant - from smooth and seamless to full on AtariST-with-rackmount-Akai-jump-up-D&B

Until it materializes, let's dig out what we have on the iPhone:
Hypertron, Koala, Nanostudio 2, Drambo, Gadget, Triqtraq, maybe iMPC Pro 2?

Trying to recall other samplers and similar stuff:
Samplebot, Strom, Realbeat, Werkbench, ProteinDK, Sir Sampleton, Sampletoy, Triggler

Oh, and not to forget: BeatHawk!

    Wow
Feel bad for letting this one out.
Gonna add another one... I don't have it, so maybe it's just a sample player like the hardware version...
    Vesuvius Sampler

You guys are sleeping on SoundWeaver.

Indeed I've tried that one a while ago. I liked the concept, reminded me of Yellofier but is it true that you cannot even sequence notes with different pitches?

  • Time stretching is the one coming soonest. Might be an IAP, I'm not sure. Grid/piano roll sequence editing is on the road map too.

  • Coming to Koala?

I don’t know if it is true, but the connectivity is IAA generator (minimal), and it has trouble seeing any Virtual Midi type ports. I think it is only Core Midi, since it only wants to connect to BT and Network (maybe controllers, but I am too lazy to set mine up right now).

It does seem like you can map nearly everything in the UI, and the app has an internal KB to play pitched samples, but I haven’t verified if it accepts external note input.

It needs some polish, but it is already feature rich and fun as a sort of Samplr jr.
Not in the running for most powerful, but definitely worth a look.
Seems like it was forgotten soon after it launched.

It seems like Yellofier is the better alternative to SoundWeaver (no pitch in sequences) and Vesuvius Sampler (which appears to be buggy...)

No external note input as far as I can tell. On the plus side, it has a potentially kick-ass randomizer, that grabs slices from all the samples you have on file.

Sometimes it’s not the feature set itself, it is getting the UI/UX right. NanoStudio and Koala are prime examples: very stable and user-friendly. When something feels right it feels right. I’m loving the idea of Youtubers making apps. They get access to a lot cool gear and feedback from their followers so they can use that knowledge to build great apps and give the people what we want! At least that’s my thought. Lol

Tbh I have stopped listening to YT opinions on gear or, well anything really. They simply can't tell you anything other than a neutral opinion. They will never tell you that they love or hate anything simply because it would be suicide for the channel. Plus they only push a very narrow bracket of gear or software. It has to be new and there has to be a buzz about it. I get it, I just don't like it and so I don't bother with it. There's so much gear that's older or less well known or idiosyncratic or whatever, that doesn't fit the algorithim.

That might be true, but if we are making a list of iOS sampler apps, both of these should get a mention.

Which app is the best, or better, is another discussion.
One that I will probably watch from the sidelines.

  • This is cool. His channel is pretty dope. I’m interested to see and hear this in action.

  • I think I’m going to have some serious fun with that and beatboxing.

  • You would think this guy, of all guys, would have some sort of video preview.
Maybe he is saving it all for his big premier video.
    😉

  • There is nothing in them screen shots that you can’t already do
