  • I'm saving a ton of money by sticking to my guns:

    No iLok.
Must be universal Binary already (M1 native).

So far, everything mildly tempting is either iLok (SoundToys), not Universal (SoundToys) or both (SoundToys).

My guns are now: It has to add something sonically to what I already have. I honestly don't think I can make a sound with the ST plugins that I can't now.

Good deals, but not (quite) as good as the group buy. Nice if you are just missing some specific thing though.

The crossgrade to T-Racks Max is only $149, it would have cost me $249 and most of my picks to get the equivalent from the group buy.

T-Racks and Mixbox were the only things I was really interested in, so now I could get Mixbox iOS and have both for a pretty great price.

Glad I didn’t go in on the group buy after all…

I would have to spend around 200$ more then I spent in the group buy to get Total
Studio Max 3.5 but what I‘m missing from that bundle isn’t worth 200$ (actually it’s worth nothing to me).

But as I said, it depends a lot on what you have and what you want.

Soundtoys Rack seems like a pretty decent price. I’d like Decapitator.

Sountoys Rack doesn't actually include any of the modules. It's sold so that those that don't own the full suite of modules can put together Rack presets that include the modules they do own.

The full suite at $229 is the best value in the sale as the individual modules are $69 and Rack is $129 in the sale. Purchasing without buying the full suite will only get you one module and Rack for $198 or two modules and Rack for $267.

In truth Rack is pretty useless when it's not part of the full suite as it has no more functionality than a group preset in a DAW (there's no Reason-like back panel modulations or suchlike). Its real value as a product is the excellent presets for Rack that you get when you own the full suite. It's one of those products that only really exists as a separate product in the Soundtoys shop so as to nudge you into purchasing the suite over individual modules.

Soundtoys are far from the only plugin company to employ marketing tactics of this nature. And given that there's not a single dud in the Soundtoys suite, I would only recommend purchasing the suite. If you don't have the cash right now for the full suite, purchase as many modules as you can afford @ $69, and wait for a compelling suite upgrade offer from Soundtoys (upgrade promotions happen on a regular basis).

  • You can get IK Multimedia Syntornik Pro-V and Audiothings Tilt EQ free with the December 2021 issue of Beat Magazine.

You can read Beat with a Readly.com subscription -- one month free trial subscriptions are available. You just have to look up words on specific pages to get the free license numbers.

Pro-V is really good, albeit sample based but you can still tweak it a lot if you choose the right starting point presets. But I'd recommend you keep the serial number for a future group buy... you never know it might work ;-)

14 products in Rack and 21 products in the full suite. Rack is most definitely decent value. It's pretty much everything that came out before Soundtoys 5 was released.

Indeed. As such the Rack on sale represents good value if you wanted at least two of those included plugins as above. Apart from the fact they can't be used outside of the rack. I guess you just have to have a multiple rack instances in that case.

Not being able to use individual plugin instances is definitely a negative in terms of workflow, but Rack itself adds negligible processor overhead so it's likely to be more of an annoyance than a hindrance.

You're really not missing anything of note either, as most of the 'Little' range are light versions of a module that's already included in the Rack package. The missing ones are great, Little Plate, is a tasty EMT Plate simulation with a low CPU hit and Little AlterBoy is a decent pitch-shifting module; but neither are unique in the plugin universe, so if you can put up with always having to load Rack when you only want an individual module, you're really not missing out over what's included in the full v5 suite.

And odds are you'll get an upgrade offer to v5 suite at some point that costs less than the current price difference between Rack and v5 suite.

Good analysis JM. I thought I'd be more tempted by the SoundToys deal but when I look at my current set up I feel I have all those areas well covered. I know folks talk about the quality of the SoundToys effects but I'm not sure it's enough. Might watch some Youtube reviews of the rack to see if I need to be swayed :)

On a seperate note Jon, what do you think of Quadra Metal and Wood on first glance?

In ST's catalogue there are definitely gems, but this type of sales structure has always struck me as maintenance heavy. KiloHearts does it so much better with out the Ilok.
