This is awesome! At this rate we may almost catch up to Windows 95 file manager in a year or two.
What a time to be alive. B)

Correct, and also very brave on this thread.

I’m a little annoyed. Got a second hand iPad Air 4 recently and thought it would be fine for a while. Now it has to be M1 to get the newest features. Thanks Tim Apple :/

Sell it and get a newer model?

Continuity for iDevice Cameras will be nice for using the iPhone or iPad as a webcam without installing any 3rd party crap.

Maybe we'll finally be able to record the iPad screen via cable connection and do a PiP from the iPhone camera at the same time without too much hassle?! (I'm still bummed that the iPad can't natively record the front-camera and do screen-recording at the same time without using additional apps or other work-arounds).

Thankfully my Intel Mini is almost fully supported by macOS Ventura and my iPhone 8 survived another year...
...my iPad Air 2 will likely be replaced before the end of the year as it's battery is NOT in good condition.

Also it will be interesting to see how managing windows on an externally connected display without a mouse & keyboard will work :sunglasses:

Was a very interesting demo seeing the camera in a split-screen mode like that while not using a third party app. Could point the way to many more computational photography applications. Remember, augmented reality “Apple Glasses” are on the horizon and expected to be released in the next couple of years.

Discover how you can easily connect Thunderbolt and USB accessories to iPad with DriverKit. We'll show you how to convert your existing Mac drivers without any code changes, learn how to add real-time audio support with AudioDriverKit, and provide best practices and tips for developing drivers...

So, it's in the sessions schedule? I need to bookmark this!

"existing Mac drivers without any code changes" very interesting!

Someone get Universal Audio to get the Apollos working on the M1 Pros

To be honest, I'd love to see Cherry Audio make their synths available on iPad.

Oh well. That M2 Air looks 🔥 though. So does that 13" Pro.

Edit: 13" Pro doesn't have MagSafe, and costs the same as the Air when you customize it. It's literally the same thing with a fan and a touch bar. Thinking the air is the better deal.

Yeah, I think you could expect marginal performance gains on the 13" pro given it has a fan. And if you really really love the Touch Bar, it's the only game in town now. But I think for 99.99% of users the new MBA is a slam dunk. For music producers it's great that it'll be totally silent. It may be time to make a move from my 2018 Intel MBP.

  • I see a lot of great comments on this thread. I'll chime in with this though: when new features are getting introduced, some of those features are going to depend on advances that are present in more recent hardware (e.g. some of the features that will only make it to M1 iPads). That's not actually a good reason to get salty. At least, assuming you want hardware and software in general to continue improving.

I know this community in particular loves to keep old gear running as long as possible, and that's awesome! But new features frequently need new hardware. It has been so since the dawn of the PC era.

Yes, the best time to do it is before the newest models arrive. Apple will usually pay a decent price to exchange the older model as long as it's not too old.

  • I missed the announcementS. So still no pro software for ipad pros?
I would really like it if they could allow idam to work between ios devices as well as ios to mac

  • At least, Apple could release Garageband PRO - an updated version with some Pro features missing in ordinary Garageband, or?

    Could be 30$ - that’s OK…

No, they mostly focused on updates to the standard system software and things like Mail. I suspect the next iPad announcement might feature updated music software and I’m hoping they’ll go for the gold and trot out some variation of "GarageBand+" or "Logic for iPad."

My 2018 12.9 iPad Pro just died from a buggered USB-C jack, so no way to recharge, get data off etc, and then it proceeded to go into an infinite reboot loop!

I'm looking very seriously about replacing it with the M1 MacBook Air, and simply run LPX there, giving up the endless search for the right combos of Hosts and AUv3 etc. in iOS.

this will be my route if my 2020 11" pro dies in some horrible accident like that.. but i would probably get an ipad mini or air as well just to be able to use some of my faV iOS music apps... i mean i have a good windows laptop, new i5 blah blah and i own reason 11 and ableton live lite with many VST/3s.. but i still make most of my music on my ipad, in spite of the shortcomings... im having good success with zenbeats + drambo ( drambo + anything or even alone is imo probably my fav, coming from a reason user... although i still cant quite wrap my head around it and havent made a full song in it... i need to really hunker down on some tutorials. i want to use xequence2 with drambo and zenbeats but cant figure it out.... ) anyway. also, ive had great success with Koala for sketching ideas or even blocs wave exported to koala to flesh it out the blocs loops a little , exporting to BM3... also using AUM and xequence2.. ive never tried it but using like a single drambo sampler instance for "audio tracks" that are triggered by xequence (since it doesnt do audio tracks only midi)... i should just buy multitrack recorder and use xequence2 in aum at the same, so when i record each track the midi is being fed into the AUM instruments which are all being recorded into 4pockets multitrack...

but i do often wonder why literally no iOS daw has it all... its like they all conspired to come up short in different areas so we would have to buy all their apps and then figure out how to combine them all. like, if i was a developer (been considering trying to learn swift and build simple apps just to start learning) AND a producer, i would want my app to have EVERYTHING... bm3s sampler. zenbeats smooth(ish) workflow, NS2 awesome stability and built in synths and FX... AUMs incredible mixer, Drambo integrated it along with melodyne. an xequence2 like timeline pattern s3quencer with piano roll editors for the patterns, knobs would be faders for easier automation wich you could easily record live, or draw easily.. sidechaining sends and buses, groups, a reason style combinator... no imorting samples just take them right from the files app/audioshare.. and finally, a sample tuner like ableton. although zenbeats has key lock so Thats cool

  • Hmmm, passesAUVal and configurationDictionary have been added to AVAudioUnitComponent for iOS 16 and iPadOS16.

And as far as I know there's no AUv3 host on iOS/iPadOS yet that uses those flags and they have been present on macOS for a very long time :sunglasses:

Something to do with multi-channel audio for AU's?

  • Seems like a lot of the developer-centric upgrades in iPadOS 16 (virtual memory is a big one, 3rd party drivers is a huge one), and some of the user facing updates (external display support) do a lot to really unlock the "pro" potential of M-series devices but I expect even internal Apple teams need a bit of time to digest and integrate these changes. I still hold out some hope that some form of Logic will make it to iPadOS, maybe they'll make an announcement later this fall. But I'm also excited to see what e.g. Loopy Pro, AUM, Cubasis and Zenbeats do with these new capabilities. And I'm excited to see if 3rd party driver support leads to new or improved options with interfaces and controllers, etc.

  • I don't think auval is even on the iPad at this point. It'll be interesting to see if and how they expose auval to programs/users. Maybe they'll just run it on an AU when it's first installed.

This certainly doesn't positively indicate that Logic is coming to the iPad (in some form), but it makes it more plausible.

Since most of these new features and support libs are limited to M1 devices, I don't think there is going to be a ton of motivation to support or use them until more devices that can benefit are in users hands.

The answer is simple, the amount of work is ENORMOUS far more than you imagine to be full-featured and iOS music software does not generate the sort of revenue that justifies trying to do it.

People imagine it is less work than it is and that such apps would generate more than they do. The App Store model works against the likelihood of this changing any time soon.

  • Personally, I'd be way WAY more interested in Mainstage being ported to iOS!

  • edited September 2022

By the way, if you want to get the new GarageBand sound pack on your iPad (it says it’s only available for iOS 16, and iOS 16 is only available for iPhones), you can just download the new GarageBand and the new sounds on your iPhone, create a new file using some of the new sounds and then send that new file to your iPad. You’ll then be able to download the new sounds because you’ll be prompted to download the missing sounds when you open the new file.

This workaround doesn’t work with GarageBand on macOS yet.

Has Logic Pro beat Drambo and Loopy Pro for app blue balls?

  • There are so many things they can do with GB (auto-normalise toggle) that would add a lot of benefit at little cost. But at this point they are just trolling us. And yes I'd pay for a few good features for a GB+ too!
