I thought it was well-known that the Audio4c has noisy preamps. On the loopy pro discord a number of people have mentioned that they use the 4c only for routing audio between the devices and use another quieter interface (set up on the Mac as an aggregate device) for I/o.

just out of interest what other interfaces do they use? I'm kinda familiar with setting up an aggregate device before I had the 4c and was using IDAM for my Pad! never thought I'd have to do it again after buying the 4c!

A variety of them. There are lots of interfaces with decent preamps. If you search here, you will find discussions about that. What you need depends also on what you are plugging in. A large-diaphragm condenser that needs phantom power that will be non-close mic’ing acoustic instruments needs a preamp with more gain and quieter noise floor than recording from a guitar/bass/dynamic mic.

true, I'll have a look into it

I can't rely on my 4c alone anymore, shame as 4 inputs was more than enough and the usb routings amaze

Zoom, Focusrite and MOTU have relatively inexpensive interfaces with decent pre’s

I was actuall looking to get a field recorder that takes xlr

something like the Zoom H4 or H5 series

    that would do it

I would research the mic pre’s and gain on them to be sure as well as how quiet they are when used in interface mode.

The noise may be related to power handling of the USB-c port.
I have the predecessor Audio4+ (lightning) with a dedicated external PSU and it has no unusual noise figures.
(used as a sound/fx routing processor between iPad and Pro Tools all the time)

I have the audio4+ and i love it but the analogue inputs are really noisy. definitely its weakest link.

however, it is usable for recording, it's just noisy for today's standards.

    too much for me

But something is plugged into (at least) one of the USB-c ports... otherwise you wouldn‘t hear anything.
USB-c is a fairly complex plug.
Even without providing power there may be negotiations on the port.
(but I‘m definitely no USB-c expert)

well the only other usb c port is the one connected to my mac, running ableton....I might need to keep that plugged in

Yes. My guess is that something from the USB-c ports is leaking into the preamp part.
    (which would be a pity)
I have no doubt about @espiegel123‘s report of the Audio4c‘s noise, but that is lacking in the lightning based Audio4+.
Otherwise I certainly wouldn‘t have used it‘s line in/out ports permanently.
(being a very sensitive listener...) o:)

I just had a thought....if I mic'd through a seperate interface (aggregate) could I still route the audio to my ipad and back into ableton? like I can

then it occured to me that if I mic from the aggregate, Auracle will still recognise that channel as usb 1&2 if I set it so in ableton won't it?

or will it require some other jiggery pokery?

I'll get me a Zoom H6 if it's all good

  • just out interest, does anyone know the impedance of the headphone out?

I see this in the manual...is that right? 30ohms?

  • comparing it to others I get no info but others are usuallly a lot less

wouldn't 30 Ohms ba considered high impedence? (comparitively anyway)

what headphones are you guys using? Ohms wise

Does nybody know out how to Direct Monitor the iPad going into the Audio4C?

anyone that can answer this question? Thanks y'all!

Edit: or I guess i would just go to auracle and on the Headphone Mix, turn on the respective input up?
Any way that could be done directly through the interface itself?

yep, you could make an ipad headphone mix.

i would use iconfig, more difficult to learn initially than auracle but a more flexible software for routing audio and midi.

sorry about that. just saw it. I'm really torn into getting this interface because of this.
I do a lot of guitar recording and vocal recording and been doing fine with my zoom h4n. with the noise people have been describing I'm reluctant to make that choice...

But having the ability to pass sound back and forth through Live and my iPad seems really appealing in order to take advantage of all the apps in the iOS platform.

    argh... what to do?

buy a new one from a big online store like Sweetwater, try it and send it back.

  • That‘s for plugin communication, not for signal routing... o:)

tbh...if I had known about the input noise beforehand, I may not have bought it in the first place!...however, the routing between iPad & computer are amazing and there is nothing else quite like it. My workaround is placing my zoom h6 alonside it (adding it as an aggregate device on my mac) then I can use the inputs from that

I contacted iconnectivity and the noise generated is perfectly normal for this unit (pre-amps not quite good enough)

but yeah...add your zoom h4n with it and you should be good

  • I just purhased this weekend an Audio4c and wondering about the channel outputs to my speakers. Is it like 1/2 (left /right) 3/4 (left /right)? Thanks

  • I have had my Audio4c for a couple of months now..It has been great, however after a studio session or going to bed, I shut down the unit by holding and pushing in the main knob for 5 seconds. Today though I can't seem to power it off this way. Each time I try it shows orange flashing leds and it won't shut off. Does anyone here maybe know why? Thanks

  • Maybe you’re pushing it for too long? IIRC there’s another function if you press and hold the knob for even longer. Firmware update, perhaps?

  • I pulled the power from it and let it sit for 2 minutes and reset it. Now it's ok.. it's an awesome iPad hub.

  • I love my old ICA4+ , gets a bit hot, bit noisy but it's awesome!!!

Complete integration of iPad and PC both in terms of audio and midi. plus, the USB hub port is fantastic.

  • @Danny_Mammy said:

Me too! Mine gets hot even when switched off, so I have an inline switch on the power cable. There's nothing else like it though.

  • Looking to buy headphones. An ear on headphones is blown/damaged.

Dont remember a zoom u44 making as much noise when switching on/off

You can hear it through headphones if headphones arnt even on ( just on the desk etc )

And you cant seem to lower volume for when it turns off or on.

    When turned on.

Volume is at a factory setting ( almost full )

    Which I find weird.

So made a sticker to remind to unplug.

Is this the same for anyone else ?

i don't quite understand what you are saying, can you try again?

you picture shows mic/int input on the audio device.

regards to the device start-up state, you can save parameters like the volume levels in the icofng software

    Thanks.

I saved volume settings via re-config app.

Will still see about unplugging headphones though, when switching device on/off.
