  • Thanks! I'll take a look at some of the midi out options you mentioned. I'm hoping to add an optional channel for chords in future.

Yes it would… this is great news. Something like core midi or virtual midi, might be a quick solution in the meantime, but totally up to you. I’m also hoping for a second midi channel that sends the chords out, along with the riff. App is phenomenal.

  • Thank you! I've got a huge list of new features I want to add. Every new feature seems to take longer than I'd hope to finish but lots of updates are on the way!

Congrats on creating something special @jon_bell Riffler is quite the accomplishment. All the best and looking forward to future development.

Special shout to @Poppadocrock for the rec on this one! Devs should make sure buddy never pays for another app. I would have never known about this app without the sale thread. Big ups!!! 💐 🏆

  • Hello. May I ask for another small feature? The option to open a blank tab? Thanks again for a great app!

Both of those things would be super awesome. I know you’ve done a ton and the app has truly evolved into something special. having the core midi or virtual midi as it’s often called would allow one to run it in standalone but hosts would be able recognize the midi and send it/record it wherever. This is what piano motifs does.

  • Hi. What would use the blank tab for? To get rid of the previous riff and start fresh?

  • I'm currently tidying up the GUI code. The old code had become so complicated that it was really difficult and time consuming to add new features. I decided it made more sense to get the old code cleaned up before adding anything new.

I still need to update the audio engine so that it will work in realtime but once that is done I'll be ready to add midi and audio outputs.

Sorry it's taking so long between updates, every job inevitably takes four times longer than I hoped!

Just as a fresh start when trying to come up with something to match an idea already in my head.

Another suggestion for consideration for a future iteration of this app: Turn each measure of a created riff into a movable building block so they can be rearranged, duplicated or removed. As a self-trained guitar player ;) a lot of the functions of this app are completely opaque to me, so I can never get exactly what I want out of the pattern generator. Being able to add, change or erase blocks of notes would be so much faster and easier than nudging settings and then waiting for an unexpected result. After all, isn't the point of this app to automate the drudgery of creating guitar riffs to get our music made faster?

Ah, I see what you're saying. I did have that feature in a very early beta versions but I decided it wasn't necessary.

So long as all the locks are turned off Riffler doesn't have a memory of the previous riff once you press "create" or "random". Adding a feature to clear the previous riff wouldn't really do anything it would just add an extra step.

So if you are ready to start a new riff turn off all the locks, more the sliders to where you want them and press create. The previous riff will be gone and you'd have something brand new.

    Hope that makes sense!

  • Yeah, I can see that would be really useful. The code to chop up the riff would be very easy the hard part would be getting a nice interface so that it would work intuitively. I'm going to be updating the main tablature view soon, I'll see if I can get that feature added.

  • New Riffler update. And it is awesome!

    Time signatures
    Tremolo picking
    New presets
    And lots more!

    Great work as always @jon_bell

  • Thank you for all the good stuff!

  • Beautiful news! Love this app. Cannot wait for Link!

@jon_bell There is a bug with the new update. All my saved riffs have now lost their settings and reverted to standard tuning. Can you fix this?

  • Doesn't seem to be a lot in the acoustic guitar area...

I've added a "blank" preset, it's at the bottom of the "other" category in the presets. Not quite a blank tab but it resets all settings to default.

Sorry about that! I've updated the save file system to a new format and must have missed something when loading the older files. I'll get an update uploaded tomorrow (hopefully will be online on Friday).

I'm currently working on the audio to allow for the overlapping notes needed for clean sounds. Once that is sorted I'll be adding lots more clean presets. I'm hoping to add an acoustic option further down the line but it will involve recording a new sample set first.

I might be making a heretical suggestion here, but have you looked into modeling your guitar sounds? I just bought Strum GS-2 from Applied Audio Engineering and I'm able to get some of the most credible guitar sounds I've ever heard from a simulated guitar on macOS. Might something like this be possible for your app? Keep up the great work.

I'd love to include some kind of guitar / amp modelling but I think it's something that would be way beyond my capabilities! Hopefully once I get midi output added it will be possible to link up to another app to achieve the same effect.

I'm just thankful for this forum so developers can get direct feedback from users for suggestions (nearly always submitted with the intent of improving things). I appreciate the ongoing discussions.

Thanks for all the work you do on this app, it’s one of my favorites on the App Store.

I wanted to ask, are there any plans for AUv3/IAA support? Is that what you mean for midi support and such?

I'm working on adding Ableton Link at the moment, after that I'll be adding midi out and hopefully AUv3.

    Hello genius dev.
I have noticed that if I start from the default state/preset, when I tweak some of the sliders I am getting an sort of all or nothing result. Mainly noticed when trying to add in some power chords or palm muting, the slider doesn’t gradually add more. It either adds nearly nothing, then one increment higher and it adds it very generously to the whole riff.

Maybe it is meant to be like that, with the sliders affecting each other maybe? I have the other sliders set to minimum when I get the all or nothing type behavior from the power chords and palm muting sliders.

Just thought I would mention this. It is not stopping me from enjoying your awesome app at all, just curious about this slider behavior.

The sliders should gradually add palm and powerchords like you described. I'll take a look and see if I can spot any bugs and will include any fixes in tomorrow's update.

I suppose everyone has their favourites but I wish you had a payment model like Loopy Pro (if that suits). This app should be developed for many years to come and you should be rewarded for it.

Adding a "tip jar" (like Jatin Chowdhury has done with his plugins) would seem to be good standard practice for these kinds of apps, even if it is a paid and not a free app.
