  • I was playing around today and was really wishing you could select beats and add back notes where you had rests. It would also be nice to be able to lock the individual beats including the “ands”.

I doubt whether he will see this comment. You should email the feature request to [email protected]

Riffler’s another app whose algorithms I would dearly love to figure out. Markov chains? Weighted selection of static maps? What?

While the official page very emphatically says the app doesn't use machine learning, I've seen conflicting info on it in one obscure announcement I found. It mentions Gen AI in the title, but the body doesn't say anything, so maybe the announcement is just wrong:

    https://wgntv.com/business/press-releases/ein-presswire/670020790/riffler-unveils-gen-ai-platform-riffler-flow-clean-riff-generator-for-guitarists-beat-makers-and-producers/

It could be, as you say, some implementation of artificial intelligence techniques. I'm not well versed, but don't Markov chains depend on prior input? I'm thinking of implementations where you enter some base text and let the algorithm recombine it. Maybe it's something along the lines of YouCompose's Aimee: https://youcompose.com/aimee-and-copyrights/

Are we assuming this project got deprioritized?

MIDI announcement was 10 months ago when I initially bought the apps, haven't used them since because the feature I bought them for hasn't been released yet. Keeps going on sale but no community outreach. Can only assume all their dev time is being spent on preparing desktop?

Does anybody have any other suggestions for great guitar sound AuV3s that currently support MIDI in? TIA

  • well, here is the wish list I sent to the dev.

    1. The main thing I wish Riffler had right now would be the ability to select beats and replace rests with notes. I've been managing somewhat with the undo button, but it does get kind of painful when you want to move notes around.
    2. It would also be great if changing notes were possible using the same layout as the chord progressions. Using the up/down arrows does the job, but I feel like having the buttons would be more immediate-- then you could use the up/down arrows to move the note up and down the octaves.

These are more like a wish list to make the riffs more tweakable:

    1. More granular locks for the beats. Instead of only being able to lock beats in pairs, it would be great if we could lock each beat independently. Even greater would be if we could lock not only the beats but the "ands".
    2. The ability to "push" chords and notes across bars to create more syncopated rhythms. Right now, it seems that notes and chords stop ringing as soon as you reach the end of a bar.
    3. The ability to toggle the feel of individual notes between 8th and 16th feel so you can control how long they ring out. Right now, toggling between "Feel" settings changes all notes. Locks can help, but there isn't enough granularity to get really surgical.
    4. The ability to move power chords anywhere on the strings. Right now, they seem to be limited to the bottom three strings.

For iOS, you have Geoshred. There's also Strummer by 4Pockets.

For desktop, I've tried a few, but I like the RealStrat and RealLPC by MusicLab the most.

  • Well, it looks like the Dev, has stopped working on the project. The last update on the website was from 6-24.
I was in contact with Jon (the Dev) for a while and getting updates, but my last several emails have gone unanswered.
We can only hope that the project is still ongoing.

  • A damn shame. This and a few others seal the deal on me buying promises of future features in support of developers.

Maybe they should release at quarter price until their features are complete, like early access video games.

Part time work or not, you’re selling a product and making claims on development progress and features to be added in hopes of marketing further, and making money off promises.

IMO this type of behavior is a huge reason why this platform is so stagnant and I don’t blame people for clutching their pearls more these days.

  • Jon Bell, the developer, said that he has been doing some freelance work which has taken his attention away from Riffler. He still has plans for the app and hopes to work on it soon when he has a chance.

Personally I think Riffler is the best on iOS. I don’t think geoshred sounds like a real guitar but that might just be me not getting the best from the app.

The closest app I’ve found is steel guitar pro from yonac. It’s not perfect, especially for rock or metal, but it’s the closest imo.

Agreed. Riffler does have the best guitar sounds, in my limited experience.

I’ve been searching for good guitar sounds on iPad for about 5 years now and nothing comes close to Riffler. Unless logic bring in a session guitarist at some point…

Awesome news! Always happy for people to spread their horizons and work on different projects, glad to hear that Riffler is still on his mind.

I completely agree by the way, Geoshred does not come remotely close to as good as the guitar sounds from Riffler. I'm never very bummed out when a crap app gets dropped, something like this would be a heartbreaker though!

  • I originally first heard about Riffler for the Ipad. after trying it, I bought it!
Then he came out with Riffler Flow. Another amazing addition to the lineup!
Since then I have been back and forth with Jon about developing a PC/MAC Desktop version.
When I heard he was going to do that and it would be a combination of Riffler and Riffler Flow, I told him I would buy it on the spot regardless of the price because IMO, it was well worth it! I am still hoping that he will release the desktop version as soon as he can! I am so looking forward to it and I know it will be AWESOME!
So Jon, if you are reading this, BRING IT ON!

  • Riffler is amazing but has some quirks. For instance the audio export feature doesn‘t work 100%. Sometimes it exports in stereo, then mono again. Also it‘s very picky to where you export to ( when using the Files app ).

When several apps are open at the same time and I get back to Riffler, all of a sudden the tempo changed to half time, sometimes it saves empty files. Weird.

It‘s a typical iPad music app story: Brilliant app, but bad maintenance and it always feels uncomfortably unstable.

Has anyone else found a recent issue with re-importing exported midi or riff files, when running in AUM?

Never mind. I’m a doofus. I confused “riffbooks” (whatever they are) imported in the gear icon menu, with .riffle files accessible at the file folder icon.

On the desktop I’m hoping we will be able to edit the created riffs as easily as one can edit tabs in guitar pro software.
