This is something I’ve been looking for on iOS (I’m a religious Stranjah fan as well as an iOS d’n’b producer!) - I’ve tried this with a combination of slicing apps and NS2 which is my main DAW with varying results (and of course using the infamous hot pants break. It seems like proper groove transferring is still a little way off in iOS land compared to Ableton and the like.
You’re making d’n’b as well?
Hello,
Do you know please what button to press to make a simple recording with the iPhone mic ? I can’t see any Rec button… Thanks !
Long press 'crop' to enable/arm record.
Oh yes, thank you !
Seriously, is it normal to have to long-press on “Crop” to enable/arm the record ? 🤔
Not really intuitive for me…
Definitely an odd choice. It seems like it would make more sense as an option under the Play button. But now I know where it is too!
@Paulo164 @mtenk The developer has to do it this way due to Apple rules. Apple demands that the microphone must always be armed even if you don't use it. This will cost spoilt (cpu) energy. So he hided the arm/record behind the "Crop' button, so that Apple won't notice it while reviewing version 1.1.3. And it worked.....:)
Interesting. Thanks for the FYI.
Wow!! and also Overdubs is on his list! 😎
From Paul himself on YouTube:
This doesn’t sound right. Many apps that can use the mic don’t hide record arming and/or allow mic monitoring to be turned off.
Absolutely brilliant, loving the new particle engine it opens so many doors.
Oookay ! Wow, quite incredible and funny 😅
I don’t really make d’n’b but wanted to have a go after seeing that tutorial. I do use breaks a lot though so can apply the same principle in my music. I did end up making a liquid dnb track using this method to layer breaks and it worked pretty well! Obviously not as straight forward as ableton, but I was quite happy with it in the end.
Okay, after one week using Neon, I admit I would like to see more editing-oriented features coming to Neon, like those we can find on desktop tools :
I also would like that Neon work on 32 floating bit while editing and the possibility to export in 16 or 24 bit when prompted. Converting clips to 32 floating bit on import would preserve quality and prevent from clipping when pushing the amplitude too high.
Would be glad to pay an additional 5€ or more to have this !
Hi. I was eager to try out the slicing edit in Neon as I really miss a proper transient editor in iOS. The only DAW I know that does this is Auria. This is a big “hole” in iOS for something very basic, just fixing a “bad note” in a otherwise good take. I know Auditor can do it (it can, right?) but the advantage of Neon is that you can do it from within the app, and more importantly you can preview on the go, in context with the rest of the song which is crucial.
Anyway, either it’s not well implemented, it can’t do what I’m after, or I’m doing it wrong…
Here’s a screenshot of a file where I’m using transient detection to do slices:
Now if I want to move a transient to fix the timing, I get that slices are not positioned properly. That was Neón positioning slices, not me so…
So far I can’t see it working for transient editing, and I don’t get it. It does work in some cases, which fewer slices, but even then it’s hard to add slices/transient points.
IMO this is is a very welcome feature that fills a gap in iOS but it doesn’t seem streamlined or maybe this slice mode thing is not thought for transient editing (ala Logic, for example). It should also be easier to add slices at specific points (using the cursor) with a “add slice” button.
What do you think?
You should contact the dev directly. You can be sure he will see your suggestions if you post them to the most recent Neon video on YouTube.
Yeah, good idea. I have nothing to lose doing that.
In fact, I remember and miss the time when I was using CoolEdit on Windows. It was so good and easy ! Who knows here ?
Difficult to find an equivalent on iOS... (maybe Auria pro ? Hokusai ?).
The thing I’d really like to see is some integration between Neon and Digistix 2. The slice to MIDI feature in Neon is the real winner for me too (I was on the fence ref purchasing before seeing that Neon had slice to MIDI). But I don't want be restricted to groove quantise feature in my host.
One of the great things you can do in Ableton is extract the groove from your lead drum break and then use that groove in your project. This leads to far more natural grooves than the standard 8th/16th swing algothims in most hosts. It would be great if you could extract your groove via Neon and then use that groove in Digistix 2 not just to play back the slice to midi elements but also any percussive elements you're layering on top.
This is obviously outside of Paul's control but with a bit of pester power from this forum we might get other developers to accept Neon's groove extracts in their hosts - looking it you Cubasis 3!
Auditor has the best transient detector for slicing IMO, the only problem is that it seems to have a limit of course, so for long files you end up doing manual slicing in order to slice the whole thing.
I'd really love to see Auditor getting more involved in the AUv3 territory though.
Does Neon still/not be triggered via midi? When hosted?
edit. I dont think I need it to be triggered.
It's not clear to me how you got to the point you show in the screenshot. You definitely can move transients, both to fine-tune their position and to warp to fix timing errors. I can't say why you're getting the "Slices are not positioned correctly" message. I've never seen that one. I've never had problems adding or adjusting slices at all.
Hit the Stretch button at the bottom to do warping. To add slices, hit Split, then move the slice to where you want it. Yes, it would be more intuitive to insert the slice at the cursor, but it's not actually any more steps either way.
Maybe check out Paul's videos if you have the time they're tedious to go through rather than a quick lookup in a full manual, but they do make a lot of things clear that aren't obvious.
(BTW, last night while testing Loopy Pro, I had one note out of time in an otherwise OK clip. Within a few seconds I was able to copy to the clipboard, paste into Neon, fix the note, and copy/paste the fixed clip back into loopy. The two are an excellent combo.)
Oh, and yes, Auditor can do this too
Ha ha ha! €5 😂🤣😂
It triggers via midi no problem, whether hosted or not.
Hehe… Yes iOS app price, you know… 😅😅
But Auditor which is 10 € already has some of these features 😗
The standalone can host Brusfri for that one.
Is this a “lucky me” situation?.
I just copy/pasted a loop from Loopy, went to “Slice” hit transient… Nothing else, didn’t move anything, just the slices Neon set with threshold, etc… If I now go into “manual” and hit Strech I get the “Slice are not positioned properly”.
EDIT: it seems like it’s the last slice, the short one at the end… if I remove it or make it longer I don’t get that error. Again, this was generated by Neon, I didn’t move anything. Seems like a bug.
This is great to know!
Version 1.14 is out:
Added a new Cross Fade feature to the Operations menu.
You can now extract samples with orbit mode.
Extracated samples using Particle Engine mode are now perfectly loopable.
Fixed issue loading Neon inside Loopy Pro (zero BPM).
Added a new updated menu system which allows submenus.
Added an option in settings to prevent the Media Bay from being closed on loading of files
The border color of a selection now changes when in resize mode.
This app is fantastic! 4Pockets are knocking it out of the park making great music apps for us all.
