Ughh, just spent the last 3 days installing all of my Waves plugins. Getting the legacy V9.92 plugins installed properly was a pain in the butt. (i.e-if you have several bundles with duplicate plugins, sometimes they won't install completely or some of their folders are deleted when installing another bundle that has the same plugins. Best to install each plugin individually, instead of installing the bundles.)

Also Cosmos keep wanting to re-scan all of my sample libraries, even though no changes were made. I reported this to Waves a couple of weeks ago, and they haven't figured it out yet.

Anyway, way off topic, but just a warning to new Waves customers.

Waves are OK-sh if you play the WUP game. If you don't they can make life frustrating.

Even with WUP, they only allow 2 installs per plug-in. Without WUP, only 1 and you're only allowed to use the app to remove your existing licenses from say a dead hard drive once per year.

If you just use one Mac to make music they can be a fairly good deal (especially when you can reasonably regularly find them giving away a free plug-in) but not so much when you want to update; the WUP gets expensive very quickly.

My WUP fee is up to $130 per year. I've decided to pass on that and have uninstalled all of them as I like to have plug=ins on two Macs; My Office iMac and my MBP I have at home. Waves are effectively a subscription for me so I've got shot of them.

  • Just a heads up; IK Multimedia Amplitube 5 is now M1 native (free update). IK don't seem to be making much of a noise about it. I just saw it in the release notes:

A few years ago, when I didn't know about the 1-year-between-moving-licenses rule, I was reinstalling Waves on the same computer after doing a fresh install of Win7, and for some reason Waves software gave that PC a different ID after the rebuild. Support was able to sort me out. I've also noticed that Support is lot friendly these days. At least they don't seem to insist that their customers install remote desktop software any longer.

Due to all that frustration, my PCs have been free of Waves products for a few years, but the recent deal on CR8 Sampler and their COSMOS sample manager sucked me back in. I got everything working, even with these old V9.92 plugins, so I'm happy.

MY WUP is that much for 1 year??!!! No thanks.

The software itself seems to work well, but their "ToneNet" thing they just started is not working for me. It refuses to log in with the Amplitube 5 application.

Has anyone been able to access ToneNet through the app (not the web site)?

😅 that’s exactly why I left the Waves empire a while ago. I can very well live without them. There are enough great and less money centric plugin developers out there.

  • Although I’ve uninstalled Waves and ilok (and won’t ever buy another Ilok protected plug in) that’s just a personal thing.

As long as you know what you’re in for you might be more than OK with how waves does things and shouldn’t let anybody else tell you otherwise. Professional studios will have very different priorities to an amateur like me for example.

But it is good to know what the limitations are to help make informed choices.

I know a lot of internet randoms like to complain about IK Multimedia and love to tell everybody to boycott them for example, but my experiences with IK have actually been pretty good — and the ‘bad’ things like their slightly cronky product installer apps aren’t bad enough for me not to use them.

So yeah. Stating the obvious really , just wanted to make it clear I’m not suggesting people avoid things just because I don’t personally like them.

Not that I’m overthink things obviously 🤔

    Down with iLok!

  • Was just reading another IKM rant thread on GearSpace, and I've participated in plenty of Waves rant threads.

With Waves I suppose it helps to know a little about computers?
ie - my DAW wasn't seeing several Waves plugins, but with a little hunting I discovered that the Windows folders were missing for those plugins.

The instructions on the Waves site helped: https://www.waves.com/support/uninstall-waves-products

So manually deleting the missing plugins (and duplicates), deleting the prefs and cache, and reinstalling worked. Wasn't too painful this time.

Anyway, I'm typing this here so I will remember it later.

  • That's what my update price looked like too. I just thought to myself that I have better things to spend money on. I was bummed thinking I couldn't install any of these on my M1 Air because the operating system was too recent and the way the installer words the install process it makes it look like you can't install them. Discovered I can and what's more they work. They're not all native to Apple Silicon, but if I only use them as I normally do it doesn't seem to matter and I don't notice an issues. I'm sure if I attempted to install 24 instances of the same plugin things would go weird, but as things are now they are all working.

I did WUP the Omni channel because for $10 I figured it was useful and I wanted to install that across the board if I felt the need, but if I was only going to use it sparingly I could have got away with that too. We'll see how much mileage I get and then quietly retire each plug as they break down and disintegrate.

Picked up that recent freebie from Attack magazine. The Trans-X plugin. It's actually a bit of fun.

Baby audio just released a new one (don't know too much about it)....https://babyaud.io/crystalline

Yes. I have made the choice not to buy any more from them. It's a bit much to have to pay just to have your plugins updated. It's not like they don't work without the update. I'll take the freebies when they come along, but that's as far as I go now. I have got over my GAS in relation to most plugins now. I think if I planned it a bit better I would have just picked a couple of quality ones from vendors like FabFilter and a couple of other boutique ones and left it at that. On the other side of the coin Waves have been around for almost forever in the plugin world and their original plug ins still work OK...? So, there is that side of it as well.

LOL rare. But your post made me finally demo Unfiltered Silo. About 30 seconds to decide, wow. I also installed SpecOps but didn't try yet. I think each user can only use that voucher once correct?

Just a heads up; IK Multimedia Amplitube 5 is now M1 native (free update). IK don't seem to be making much of a noise about it. I just saw it in the release notes:

The software itself seems to work well, but their "ToneNet" thing they just started is not working for me. It refuses to log in with the Amplitube 5 application.

Has anyone been able to access ToneNet through the app (not the web site)?

At the risk of only replying to myself, ToneNet works today. Must've been opening day jitters for their servers or something.

    Atlas 2 50% off:

    https://algonaut.audio/

I’m starting to think atlas (or XO) might be almost like anti-GAS. I have built up a huge library of drums over the years that I rarely use. Something like Atlas might actually help me make use what I already have — so a totally worthwhile investment 🤣

Does anybody have any direct experience with atlas or XO? Joking aside, I’m thinking it will actually make use of the drums I have and (temporarily at least) stop the constant urge for more new stuff…

So, er, yeah… $49 seems like a reasonavly good deal, is that as low as Atlas goes? Is it better to get XO instead at some point?

I have the free new waves thing, but it’s a waves thing so it will annoy me when they remove a license in less than a year from now. I’d rather pay for a proper license and worry about upgrades in my own time. :-)

I only have Atlas. For my use, it's very good - making trial & error of sample replacement a quick work. Likewise, swapping patterns, etc. is fast. Keep in mind I like happy accidents though, so this colors my reaction to Atlas a bit. I heard that for some the auto-categorization of samples is not very accurate. At least in the new version you can re-categorize to make it right. Not many categories, unfortunately - you have your drum components and other sounds are grouped in the "Other" category. Doesn't work with loops/longer pad samples yet. The sequencer is a nice touch and makes experiments fun. 👍
Edit: just want to add that someone here mentioned a good software just for categorizing your sample. If your aim is that, you might want to search the forum. I'm sorry I forget the name...

Agree on the Waves license model, but you can use it to just try out and see if you would profit from something like Atlas.

Or, you can just try Atlas itself and see if you would profit from it. Seems like a more direct approach, innit 😉

Atlas is great by the way, and it will probably reveal that you have too many samples you can't even remember and therefore you shouldn't buy or download any more for a good while...🙂
