@CapnWillie said, For me, the color coded MpE enabled grid and keyboard controllers .
You see, I knew I was overlooking the good stuff. MPE enabled grid too? I simply need to read the documentation for making the connections to add the express ability.
@CapnWillie said, . However, If I had to use it in Zenbeats I’d just root midi to audio track to record. I prefer working with audio vs midi anyways because from there you never have to worry about cpu or taking projects between different devices/daws for fear of AU incompatibility. Also, working with audio inspires me to layer sounds and make them my own more than working with midi as you’re always concerned about cpu/dsp crashes, etc.
Totality been vibing with that particular work ethos ever since getting on with Koala/AUM for a year now. Initially, I tried your described setup above, but it seems audio tracks only seem to host AU FX, not instrument synths or Romplers. But that’s ok by me, I’ll figure it out, I just needed to hear that it can be done👍
What initially brought me here was reading about being able to treat MIDI and audio clips simultaneously when doing the time line arrangement/recording and the automation sounds friendly.

If you are working in Timeline View and you want your automation to be copied with the pattern, you will have to print the automation to the pattern first. To do this, select the patterns, then tap the settings icon. Go to the Print Automation menu to select the options
That's correct for now but we do have a ticket in our backlog to enabling recording from Instrument Plugin GUI's. Glad there is a workaround!
@ipadbeatmaking
I just did your work around. Slick. Thank you. It worked as you intended or as how I implied I use GS, but I failed to mention that I mostly use GS in midi out mode to trigger Troublemaker, or other mono styled synth patches. With legato mode enabled, it’s the fastest and funnest way I have discovered to lay down acid bass lines, as one example.
It’s all good. I’m not here to complain or make feature requests. I’ve simply been exploring during the holidays. Been on a stubborn DAWLESS thing for a couple years, just to realize I’ve been trying to use a hodge-podge of AUs inside AUM to recreate Ableton, the very thing I ran away from ten years ago.
This past month I’ve tried Zenbeats, AEM, Loopy Pro, Endless. So far, it seems Loopy Pro is winning me over and has been the most enjoyable. More intuitive to me for recording and for once, progressing, from my favorite various AUs which inspire me: SpaceCraft, GeoShred, ChordPolyPad, Koala, synths, KQ Sampei, somethimes synced, sometimes not, or a combo of both.
My next stepping stone it seems is feeling out which will be more suitable for exporting my Loopy arrangment to for mixing, AEM or Zen.
Good peeps round here, thanks, and my mind is almost always open ;-)
I’m a work in progress.
Hi!. Is there any way to make MidiGuitar2 work in Zenbeats?. I mean getting audio to midi with midi guitar (or any audio to midi auv3) and then playing an auv3 instrument.
I believe it’s not possible to route midi from an audio track fx to another track, but maybe it’s changed lately or there’s a workaround…
EDIT: just figured out a way. You can do it with the “Midi Bus” plugin included in MidiTools. You have the audio track, add a MidiGuitar plugin and a MidiBus plugin after it, sending to bus 1.
On the audio instrument track you add a MidiBus midi fx set t receive in bus 1 and voila, you’re routing midi from an audio track to a midi track.
I believe the reason why I hadn’t been able to this before is because the MidiBus plugin wouldn’t work in Zenbeats, it was quarantined, but it seems to be working now.
Zenbeats is good start hopefully in its initial development. Unfortunately there is no way to use internal MIDI plugins like midilfo, I tried but without luck. Most of controllers in sampler can’t be modulated from midi learn. And for me is critical thing that the drag’n’drop doesn’t work, for my samples I need to copy all of them to Zenbeats folder, so no option to add some folders to Zenbeats.
I’d say it is way past its initial development, and the team is working on 3.1.4 as we speak😎. But as always, keep the suggestions and requests coming. If you have a support issue and want it surely logged and looked at, please use the regular support channels.

3 cheers for this idea
Especially if the price was reduced commensurate w iPad ..
Is there any way of making the note editor something close to full-screen? At the moment, I’ve got 3 thick bands of information that I don’t need (marked with red scribbles)! I’ve seen the option in Setting for “Full Screen Pattern Editor” but it is already enabled. Using the Pattern Editor is enough of a struggle anyway; Roland could, at least give us some space to create our masterpieces…
I’ve also seen the Up/Down icon (beween the two lower scribbles). This looks as if it should be used to drag up or down thus resizing the note editor. It seems to be completely unresponsive!
Well, it’s been a while now so here’s an old Easter Egg some of you may not know about: tap the hamburger symbol top left, then tap on Help, and in the bottom tap About Zenbeats. In the information screen that shows up, double-tap the Roland logo. Then you are able to take your anger out on the dev team in and old-fashioned way😁.
/DMfan🇸🇪
It is unresponsive in timeline view, yes but movable a bit in loopbuilder view. The iPad screen is small, and there is always the question of balancing the amount of info shown so this is by design I’ d say, there is nothing wrong. I have made the dev team aware of your request however, or maybe @MatthewAtZenbeats sees it here first.

Drag’n drop is in the backlog to be added we have been told, but there is no mention of time frame.
/ DMfan🇸🇪
Are you talking about the Up/Down icon that appears when the on screen keyboard is visible? If so, that’s a separate icon with a different function. The Up/Down icon that I was talking about isn’t even visible in loopbuilder mode, or if it is, I’ve missed it completely. As far as I can see, there is no possible view that allows my icon to be used in the expected manner.
You’re absolutely right, it is currently not movable in either view.

I’ve found a webpage that talks about importing Midi loops. The article uses Zenbeats 2 for Windows. Does anyone know if it is possible to do it in Zenbeats 3 for iPadOS?
https://groovemonkee.com/blogs/blog/importing-midi-into-zenbeats-v2
In loopbuilder mode you you pick an instrument, ZC1 for example, click and make an empty loop, press and hold in that loop and you can import a MIDI file. The file has to be in the midi pattern folder inside the user folder in Zenbeats.
I have never used files midi files myself to any extent, so I have just tested with a piano sound a while ago and it worked. Never used it since.
EDIT: just tried again with a MIDI file for Dancing Queen, slowed it down to 101 BPM as the original, using ZC1 and the LA Sunset piano from the Piano Universe pack. Put some Zenbeats Multiverb on it and it sounds really good! Go ABBA, go Zenbeats!😁

I’ve also found a Roland webpage, which from the picture and caption, appears to talk about Zenbeats 3.0.5 on the iPad, Amongst the items is one which reads “Fixed MIDI import issues in LoopBuilder”, although I notice that the item is marked “Bug Fux” 😮 I cannot work out how to carry out this operation, though…
I brought this up to Roland about a year ago. I’d like to see the note editor full screen when that is what I’m working on. Other apps give you most of the screen for note editing (NS2, FLSM for instance) The other windows are just taking up space as far as I’m concerned.
I’m still getting used to the Roland terminology. By “Loopbuilder” I guess they mean the Clip view rather than the Timeline view, Indeed, in the manual which is linked from Zenbeats 3.1.3, it shows a menu with both Import and Export Midi options. These are not present in the actual software.
In fact the only option I can find anywhere in the software that deals with the transfer of Midi data is the one on the settings menu of a clip that already has data, and that is limited to Export Midi.
Maybe the whole Midi transfer issue was a problematic one for Roland and they have temporarily (?) shelved it. Could you shed some light on this @MatthewAtZenbeats ?
See my post above👊. The manual is dated and I have asked for an update. The dev however, wants to go the way of internal help inside the app but understands my point that different people learn in different ways.
/DMfan🇸🇪
Thanks for following this up! I tried copying a Midi file to the MIDI Patterns folder, but when I carried out the steps that you described, I didn’t see an Import Midi option. I also tried selecting Show Pattern Browser and the selecting User from the dropdown, but didn’t see my Midi file. Have I got the steps right?
Also, to your point about the help, there doesn’t seem to be any “internal” help, just the linked manual at https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/Zenbeats_ver21_start_guide_eng01_W.pdf
Just tap so a new loop opens up, then long- press inside the loop. To make sure Zenbeats reads the MIDI file you might want to restart the app. For me it works right away though.
Under the help section there are different help choices. Check them out. You should also follow

where Matt and others from the team put content up.

Ah! Got it. I was trying the long tap after having already double tapped to create an empty loop. Doh!
The only issue I have now is that if I copy and paste a clip from the Timeline view, I get a clip in the LoopBuilder that just plays once and then stops.
However, if I export that clip as MIDI and the import it again into a new clip using your method, the clip repeats as it should, until it is explicitly stopped.
I guess this means that can import MIDI files from elsewhere, or copy from the Timeline view, it’s just that this latter procedure needs an extra couple of steps…
Thanks for your help and patience 😀

I have imported my own drum samples via Files app into various sub folders. Now I can browse these samples easily but they are displayed in one huuuuge list (the respective file path/ sub folder is displayed though). Am I missing something or is this what we call a „feature request“?
@MatthewAtZenbeats
@dermichl
Feel bad you haven’t got an answer yet from anyone here in the forum but I have put forward your question to the dev directly. I assume this must be a feature request yes, having to do with how Zenbeats displays the content of subfolders.
The dev team is most likely deep into something right now, it’s pretty quiet in other channels as well except for an arp video on Youtube.
Patience.
/DMfan🇸🇪
+1 👍I believe it’s a feature request and one that I made a while back. Zenbeats could really use a better directory listing strategy. Folder/sub folder navigation kind.
Thanks @tahiche!
