  • I love Dixie for its sound, but I find the interface not touch-friendly and the preset system confusing. This looks like it an improvement in that regard :)

  • Dixie is my most used app, used almost daily. This looks intense and I have gigs of sf2s that I can put to use, lol.

    My sentiments exactly

  • Whoa…

So it has Attack, decay, sustain for your sf, and you can load up several sf At the same time, memory permitting.

Anyone taken the plunge yet, this looks and sounds really interesting

Love to here some initial opinions? Cheers!

  • That video was hypnotizing

I hear that. Its amazing but that menu, damn.

  • Im as impressed by his music programming and arranging (if not more), than the app itself.

Not compatible with M1 Macs, but this could be a real boon for classical music composers.

And here it is on his web site: http://www.kiraqtech.jp/blog/kq-sampei/

  • Oh wow seems like it sounds great. Looks like it comes with some built in soundfonts? Anyone tried it yet? Looks cool.

    Curious as well…

It comes with the "General User GS v1.471.sf3" sound file. It helps replace the salt filled by the Roland Sound canvas app.

It looks pretty solid. I added a lot of sound files I already had on my iPad... mostly pianos but I had Sonatina_Symphonic_Orchestra.sf2. Loaded a couple MIDI files with orchestral music and the General User loaded instruments. Sonatina did not... probably need to create some type of mapping file. I'll try other sf2's and look for sf3's which I've not encountered before.

Maybe a good replacement for BS-16i which is pretty solid but never really seems become standard with me.

For $6 you can't really go wrong if you like to add orchestral sounds to projects. I'll bet the SoundFonts4u pianos are useful and they are a lot of one off SF2 instruments available.

It also loads DLS files so I'll look around for that file type too.

Ok downloaded KQ Sampei but can’t get it to show as a AU in any host strange as saw this video. It’s not listed in AUM and I opened up standalone first. Anyone else having problems ?

OK I’ve solved the problem hard reset of iPad sorted it.

Did you try the standalone first? Some apps need you to do that once to register themselves. A reboot is always good to try too.

Ok sorted the problem hard reset of iPad solved it. The dev is very responsive getting me a answer came straight back via email all good.

Great news, I am very much invested in soundfonts and I respect the dev so I shall be getting this. Envelope control is something often missing on SF2 players so good to see it here.

If M1 support arrives then this may replace BS-16i as my cross-platform player in my MTS projects.

Edit: SF3 support as well, very interesting…

  • Shame you can’t show more than 1 panel as a AU like you can in standalone unless I’m missing a trick. I know what your saying just load another AU instance but it would be nice to have multi panels on one track as cuts down on cpu and helps with screen management in AUM etc.

looks good. what would be the advantages compared to bismark bi-16i?

A couple of things I spotted from the app description are sf3/DLS file format support and disk streaming of larger soundfonts. I’m not certain but I’m fairly sure bs-16i does not have these features.

  • Black midi maker

  • I may get this at some point...

...is the AUv3 multi-out and multi-timbral as well? (ie. each midi-channel gets it's own output).
(I could not find anything about this anywhere).

I hope you do... we need someone with experience from the General MIDI era to
    expose the fulll features here.

No. It does offer up to 1024 voice polyphony in the settings and an MPE instance in AUM.

I noticed pitch controls per part (with exclusion of drums is noted).

  • Has the file / preset situation improved? I absolutely love KQ Dixie but the way it handles presets is pants.

Ok, same 'issue' as with BS-16i then. It's 16-part multi-timbral in stand-alone but only 1 part in AUv3.

This could potentially put a severe tax on resources when using as AUv3 as you need to load 16 separate instances instead of one instances that handles all 16 channels and outputs to individual outs when needed?

Considering that KQ Dixie is already fully multi-timbral and supports multiple outputs I would not be surprised if this app gets it too at some point as well?! (From the screen-shots and video posted by @Jumpercollins it looks like the 'Part' in AUv3 window can be changed, thus it should already handle all 16 midi-channels in one instance?!).

This seems to have the edge on that one can enable disk-streaking which should in theory reduce the memory requirements.

What I like about BS-16i is it's iCloud integration for SoundFonts and settings (ie. I have access to all my sound fonts from bot the iPhone and iPad).

But from the looks of, as I'm already quite familiar how KQ Dixie handles it's files this should be about the same I guess?!

    Cheers!

Much better... there a default Folder structure with "Factory (3 Presets)" and a widget to create more Folders and an Edit button move Presets around in the Folder structure or delete them.

    Hello, Everyone. I'm the developer.

Ok, same 'issue' as with BS-16i then. It's 16-part multi-timbral in stand-alone but only 1 part in AUv3.

No. It's 16-part multi-timbral in AUv3 though the output is single.

16-Part, can be set MIDI channel on each part.

The memory of sound sets is shared if you have multiple instances on AUM.

    Hi!

Thanks for the info, this definitely gives your app an edge over BS-16i when used as an AUV3 :sunglasses:

Good to know. I love KQ Dixie and it's multi-out option so I hope we'll see that some day in this new app too?
(I'll download it after I've finished my lunch).

    Cheers!

Let me throw some MIDI at it and see if all 16 channels produce output.

Ok, same 'issue' as with BS-16i then. It's 16-part multi-timbral in stand-alone but only 1 part in AUv3.

Yes. Only 1 Instrument in AUv3 but it renders incoming MIDI on multiple channels.

This could potentially put a severe tax on resources when using as AUv3 as you need to load 16 separate instances instead of one instances that handles all 16 channels and outputs to individual outs when needed?

Perhaps the RAM requirements in AUv3 are the issue here. You can force the 1 instrument to a specific Bank/Program but I don't see why that would mean it could load 16 channels of instruments.

This seems to have the edge on that one can enable disk-streaking which should in theory reduce the memory requirements.

What I like about BS-16i is it's iCloud integration for SoundFonts and settings (ie. I have access to all my sound fonts from bot the iPhone and iPad).

It appears to pull SoundFonts into a private folder. The iCloud Folder holds Presets and the Local Folder holds MIDI's and Project files. So, BS-16i might have the edge here.

  • To synchronize devices, please use backup and AirDrop.
because I don't pay for iCloud Plus, my iCloud storage is only 5GB.

  • Supports microtuning!!
I love this developer. Instant purchase ♥️

I'm on the 5GB Plan too so I'm used to 'house-keeping' and do local device-backups...
...but I use iCloud to share files between devices.

Does the 'backup' include the imported SF2 files or only pointers/file-bookmarks to them?
Is the 'Mark sounds for backup' a way to disable backing up the imported SF2 files?

My current SF2 collection is not 'huge' just a couple hundred MB's so it's probably not an issue.

I'm just trying to get my head-around KQ Sampei and how it's iCloud options work as it seems to be a good option to share settings & sounds between devices.

As a reference BS-16i can store all its SF2 files on iCloud making it quite seamless to share them between devices.
(BS-16i is my current 'go-to' when dealing with SF2's but this might change soon, starting to like KQ Sampei already...).

    Cheers!
